Chapter 4 - How Can There Be Monsters in This World?

Chapter 4 – How Can There Be Monsters in This World?

Upon hearing Ling Tian’s words, Lin Yaoyao furrowed her brows and said, “If it’s not a person, what else could it be? Zombies or monsters?” She suddenly recalled the nightmare she had. If it were indeed monsters or zombies, it could explain the extreme brutality depicted in her dream. But that couldn’t be possible, could it? She thought that Ling Tian was just making a joke, perhaps trying to scare her.

“I’m not joking with you, take this seriously,” she said, looking at Ling Tian. However, she started to doubt herself when she saw his unyielding expression. Was this guy always so cold and serious even when making jokes, or was he not joking at all? Could there really be non-human entities in the world?

That’s impossible, right?

“First, it was the elderly in the family who died, right?” Ling Tian continued, “Then, the man, followed by the child, and finally, the child’s mother.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Yaoyao was astonished. “How did you figure that out? Did you deduce it from the crime scene photos?” She was aware that there was a slight time difference in the deaths of each family member, as confirmed by forensic analysis. The killer had murdered the elderly first, then the husband, the child, and finally, the wife. She couldn’t believe that Ling Tian had noticed it at a glance.

Indeed, this guy was extraordinary!

She was indeed the man she was in love with … Bah, I don’t love him! I will never fall in love with him.

He was not responsible anyway, so she would consider what happened earlier as a mutually beneficial transaction. She would think of it as her sleeping with him, not the other way around.

What’s so great about …

Somehow, she wanted to believe that, but she couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease in her heart.

Ling Tian looked at Lin Yaoyao with his plain eyes, and then said: “I am indeed looking for someone!”

Lin Yaoyao looked confused and didn’t know why he suddenly changed the topic.

You didn’t answer me when I asked you, why are you answering me now?

“Yes, they were killed by one of the individuals I’m looking for,” Ling Tian responded, which confused Lin Yaoyao. She didn’t understand why he was abruptly changing the subject. Why didn’t he answer her earlier? It was as if his reflexes had gone around the Earth several times before he responded. Was his answer related to the current case they were discussing?

“The individual I’m looking for is one of the Puppeteers,” Ling Tian continued.

“What … what does that mean?” Lin Yaoyao asked in total bewilderment. “Puppeteer … what is that?”

“A Puppeteer is a kind of creature that feeds on human brains but has the appearance of a human,” Ling Tian explained. “You might encounter them often. Some of your relatives or friends could even be Puppeteer, and you’d never recognize them.”

This revelation left Lin Yaoyao utterly stunned. Feeding on human brains? Are you kidding me? How could there be monsters like that in the world? Monsters that eat human brains? She might have even encountered them? Her relatives and friends could be these creatures? It couldn’t be true, could it?

She tried to persuade herself not to believe Ling Tian. He was surely making things up and trying to scare her. But his serious and unshaken expression made her doubt her scepticism.

“Are you … serious?” Lin Yaoyao looked at Ling Tian, hoping he would suddenly break into a smile and tell her that he was just joking to scare her.

But he didn’t.

Ling Tian’s expression remained serious and unfazed.

Could it be … that there were really creatures that fed on human brains? How can we investigate cases like these? This went far beyond the capabilities of our department, right?

“But … if these creatures feed on human brains, why did they only eat the brains of the husband and wife, and then torture and kill the rest?” Lin Yaoyao thought of something and asked, “Why not just consume the brains?”

She had a point. This new information made her even more skeptical.

“Because they need to elevate the emotional scores of the brains they consume before feeding,” Ling Tian explained. Lin Yaoyao was even more confused: “What … what score?”

“It’s the level of a certain human emotion,” Ling Tian continued, “Joy, pain, anger, fear, despair, and more – all human emotions are food for the Puppeteers. They go to great lengths to cultivate these emotions in humans to get higher scores. The higher the score of the brain they consume, the more delicious it is to them and the more it enhances their power.

“So, the Puppeteers will do whatever it takes to make your brain’s emotional score higher,” he continued. “For example, they might disguise themselves as your lover, friends, or even your children to manipulate a specific emotion in you.

“In short, all your emotions caused by people are very likely … coveted by Puppeteers disguised as humans! They are meant to elevate your brain’s emotional value to achieve higher scores. So … the one who killed this family is a Puppeteer! A Puppeteers that feeds on the suffering-type brains!  So … this Puppeteer, in front of the mother, tortured the family members, the husband, and finally dissected that child! The emotional score (of suffering) of this mother must’ve been extremely high! Then, when she was in a state of unbearable pain, he consumed her brain!”

Ling Tian continued to speak, his gaze fixed on Lin Yaoyao, his expression cold and serious.

This conversation left Lin Yaoyao utterly horrified, her scalp tingling!

Is this some kind of joke!?

This is just … truly terrifying upon reflection!
