Chapter 96: Path of Annihilation—Despair

Blades rained from the sky with even more ferocity than the squires had just hours ago. At first, the few remaining civilians feared these blades; however, once they saw the blades completely ignore them and only strike the demons, they knew they were saved.

Hushed breaths of excitement and disbelief were exchanged between the civilians. They almost couldn't believe it—they... they were saved!

Finally able to come out of their cowering state, they looked through the sky to find thousands of squires exterminated every second. Soon, the sky was going to heal, and the demons would be repelled!

...

[Glynt's PoV]

'Ah, fuck. Since when did this town get so big?' Glynt grumbled as he walked toward Sylus's energy. He was currently using a tank's skill [Guardian Angel], which showed him an ally's location whenever their health was low.

'Of course, you couldn't handle this. Just some demons and... agh, what do I train you for!' Glynt lamented as he quickened his stride. Good thing he drank frequently; otherwise, he wouldn't be so nimble right now—

"Fuck off, building! Outta my way," Glynt said as he raised his arm drunkenly and pushed off the stupid building that had suddenly appeared in his way.

Looking ahead, he saw that he was close. Additionally, his health was declining more and more.

'This gonna be... 50 laps,' he declared to himself as he pressed forward.

...

[Magnus's PoV]

"They just keep coming! You stupid, crass dwarf! Must you let them hit us instead of shooting them down!"

"Why don't ye shut up and keep playing with yur fire while te adult does te work." Sylus retorted as he shot down a squire right before it could strike down Magnus.

Magnus huffed before raising a hand to summon his own fire, careful to control its essence so that the building wouldn't burn down. At the same time, he placed his free arm around the boy and forced him to move.

"There's no time for tears, boy. Walk." Magnus's rough command only seemed to trigger the boy more, who squirmed in his grasp while reaching backward for his mother. Even though she was nothing more than a pile of broken flesh and blood by now.

"Mom..." the boy continued crying, forcing himself free from the Vakir's grasp.

Sylus swore under his breath as Magnus turned and lunged for the boy. However, a squire sliced its talon across his chest, knocking Magnus to the ground.

With the scent of blood in the air, the rest of the squires entered a blood craze. Magnus looked up at the boy, his vision red and hazy as he felt his life bleeding out of him.

Still... just one more blast of fire... maybe, somehow... it would be enough–

"Hey, boys. Looks like you need saving again."

Glynt's voice carried through the room like some kind of crude revenant. Of course, just moments from death, Magnus would be toyed with one last time by his life. The person who had saved him, had saved Sylus... had taught them to always fight for others and end wars and suffering... well, when push came to shove, he chose to drown in alcohol.

He wasn't here.

But then... why did the air suddenly feel more pleasant? Like the aura of malice all those squires emitted was suddenly gone. Or, more accurately, focused on a single separate entity. As if someone used a taunt skill on them.

"Glynt... what are you doing?!" Sylus's voice rang through his dark and hazy mind. A voice that told Magnus...

Glynt had actually come!

But if he was using his taunt skill...

...

[Nick's PoV]

Nick continued sending his shadow swords through the city, searching for Khaic or the fourth commander. Thousands upon thousands of squires littered the ground, but still neither of them was in sight.

Pursing his lips, he turned to Elise, who had been using some kind of divination spell to locate the demons. Since that obviously wasn't working, Nick wanted her to take on a different task.

"Evacuate these civilians. If we can't find the Bloodknight, then I'll force him out."

'Unless he's too scared,' Nick thought as he ran into the town himself, not giving Elise any time to respond.

As Nick ran past rows and rows of buildings, he did his best to ignore the fact that they had once held loving, kind families. However, this was near impossible because of a simple, harrowing truth: when death was apparent everywhere, nobody could possibly run from it.

All across the ground, unfortunate souls lay covered in their own blood as well as their families' and friends' blood. It was clear that in their final hour, most of them had banded together to try and save their children. Those at the top were likely to be the most capable fighters, whereas those at the bottom were mostly children.

There were a few exceptions to this rule, as some upstart children could be seen lying on top of their dead parents. No matter who tried to protect them, though, the truth was the same.

No matter what anyone did to stop it, death arrived all the same. True death, not that false notion created by the resurrected necromancer.

Nick wanted to bow his head in respect, to find a shovel and give these people a proper burial. However, he knew that if he stopped for even a moment now, thousands more could die. It was a brutal world, one that no amount of reading or watching could have prepared Nick for this harsh reality.

Fueled by anger, Nick's aura began growing immensely. Every demon, every useless fucking worm that attacked this place... they needed to be eradicated.

Annihilation swirled around Nick—a dreadful amalgamation of destruction and power, love and hate. Each aspect of his malice took form, and though a million different things collided to create a singular burst of Destrudtion, there was one completely left out—mercy.

Khaic had said even demons were bound by a certain sense of mercy. That every single race had some point they wouldn't dare go across out of fear of losing themselves. In this moment, Nick knew that if he was pushed to it, there was no line he wouldn't go across.

Oblivion, the tower, demons as a race or concept—whatever threatened his life or his loved ones would be destroyed unequivocally.

To the demons who had entered this realm with no emotion besides bloodlust, they were overcome with fear the moment they felt true murderous intent—one that far surpassed any mortal idea of fury. As the purple energy of Annihilation spread through the town, disintegrating buildings, the dead, and the squires at the most fundamental level, every single squire had one dying wish: that they would be met with mercy.

Whether or not Nick knew it, he denied that wish in the most brutal possible way. As each of them was sent back to Oblivion, most of their essence was destroyed. These squires no longer had any power, strength, resistance, or even a physical form. As a whole, the concept of defense was completely destroyed for them.

However, their disembodied consciousness was completely left intact. And as they soon found out, Oblivion was filled with Eldritch terrors almost as horrifying as a vengeful [King of the Cosmos].

Over and over for an infinite amount of eternities, each of the squires' minds were effortlessly destroyed, shattered into millions of pieces. The lurkers in the dark would share these pieces amongst themselves and play with them, toy with them. In the land far past the mortal idea of pain, suffering, and torment, these beings cherished this latest gift from a walker.

Nick walked through the now empty, silent town as he held his 1,000 swords behind him, ready to strike at any squire who still remained. However, there wasn't even a speck of dust anywhere, let alone a breathing, murderous entity.

'Except for those idiots,' Nick thought, happy that he had been able to control his anger just enough. He didn't know if the squires surrounding them had died, but he did feel as if they had.

If not, there wouldn't be any backup for those few stragglers. Therefore, he knew they would be able to kill them and survive.

Now, his only responsibility was Khaic and the 4th commander. Just as he had done with the squires, Nick was going to extinguish every part of them except for their mind. He wanted them to suffer eternally, just the same as they made these people suffer.

He wanted tears from a remorseless devil, he wanted screams from a fearless devil, he wanted utter devotion from a lawless tyrant. After he obtained those things, he was going to obliterate them regardless.

'So, come out. Come out, wherever you are. Don't cower now that I've unlocked this first seal, now that I've earned real power. I understand that fighting against someone who could actually kill you is new, but...'

Nick smiled as a stifling aura stopped his mocking thoughts short. Khaic was here.
