Chapter 230: Pierce's Expectations

Viper twisted her slender waist as she sat next to Daisy, her face being sarcastic and charming. She snorted, "You used my secret formula to deceive Typhon Group. In the eyes of some people, our relationship has been exposed. You've gotten me into big trouble."
"How big?" Daisy asked quickly.
"Hehe." Viper chuckled, covering her mouth. "Initially, it puzzled me, but I managed to cover it up."
Her voice was extremely soft, and to express her dissatisfaction, she playfully pinched Daisy's cheek. The gesture was so natural, it didn't seem out of place at all.
"Let go!" Daisy retorted in kind, pointing her finger-gun mid-air and sending out a shockwave, giving Viper another taste of the "torture" she had experienced before.
Their subtle interactions went unnoticed, but they frightened the bald brother, who was observing from afar.
Unlike Grant Ward, who was part of a Hydra subsidiary several layers were removed from Viper. Not to mention Viper, he had only heard of Baron Starrak, but never seen him.
The bald brother Sitwell was determined to mix himself up in Hydra and had access to all the information Pierce kept on Hydra's top heads. He recognized Viper as soon as she appeared.
He couldn't understand how his partner, a rising talent within S.H.I.E.L.D., got mixed up with Viper...
Daisy and Viper's conversation quickly ended—it wasn't that big of a deal after all. Having left Hydra several times only to return, Viper didn't care much about the organization. She used it mainly for protection. After pretending to be drunk and mistakenly identifying someone, she reminded Daisy of a couple of things before busying herself with other entertainment.
The dinner concluded with little interest from the celebrities present, leaving Stark to foot the bill himself. However, two days later, he found another big player willing to share the cost, that is, he was trying to establish the Avengers Initiative, and there was some surplus cash left over recently.
Daisy wasn't sure what exactly was discussed between them or how long they talked, but she knew Fury's face getting darker and darker.
For many, Stark's banquet was just another social event. Even Stark himself probably didn't take it too seriously. The media made a few sarcastic remarks, but the matter quickly died down.
However, what happened in that corner of the banquet was a major earthquake for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Hydra division.
Impossible! That was Director Pierce's initial reaction.
Hydra is attempting a power grab! That was his second reaction upon hearing from the bald brother about Daisy's connection with Viper.
Pierce was furious. Most of Hydra's high-ranking members in S.H.I.E.L.D. were developed by him, and the thought of the higher-ups sending someone to covertly usurp his authority was intolerable.
"Go kill her," Pierce said grimly. It was clear whom he meant by "her."
But for the first time, Crossbones, who always followed orders and never disobeyed, said, "No."
"Sir, I'm loyal to Hydra," Crossbones said clearly. He was loyal to the organization, not to any individual. Over the years, he may have leaned towards Pierce due to their working relationship, but he wouldn't betray Hydra.
If Daisy really is Hydra sent to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D., he will not take sides. Want him to help Pierce kill Hydra? That's impossible.
Pierce turned to look at the Bald Brother.
The bald head began to sweat again, and he stuttered, "Sir, we need more intelligence to analyze."
Pierce felt a chill in his heart; two important subordinates, one neutral, the other strictly speaking, also remained neutral!
The very suspicious Pierce couldn't help but overthink—had they been swayed by Daisy already? Were they just stringing him along now?
Backstabbing is Hydra's norm; the behavior of the two was very sus.
"Alright, it was reckless of me; let's observe a bit longer."
He said this, but in a daze, he saw a viper waiting not far away, ready to devour him whole from head to toe once he fell.
Fear, hesitation—the various methods of terror Hydra used to employ which were once his helpers, now became poison in his heart.
The bald brother might still have doubts about Daisy's "Hydra" identity, but Pierce was already 90% convinced. After all, Daisy's daily behavior didn't resemble someone committed to world peace. Thinking about how he had painstakingly planned for 30 years, only to have someone else steal the fruits of victory, Pierce couldn't suppress his anger.
But today, the attitudes of the bald brother and Crossbones chilled his heart. Without the support of these two trusted subordinates, he couldn't directly lead those Hydra members. The situation was severe, and he couldn't just let it be; if Daisy gained their support, he would die without a place to be buried—S.H.I.E.L.D. would let him retire, but Hydra would not.
After much thought over two days, he finally found a not-so-clear breakthrough.
Crossbones was resolute and firm, hardly swayed by words. Old man Pierce, just like Daisy, also aimed at the bald brother, whose integrity was questionably low.
"Go test her, see how she reacts," Pierce gave the bald brother an order.
"Test what? How do I test?" The bald brother was a bit clueless; this "test" seemed very dangerous to him.
Old man Pierce's lips twitched slightly, his eyes revealing determination, "Of course, shout our slogan, that will completely reveal her true identity."
"No, no..." The bald head shook repeatedly; he wasn't idiotic enough to sacrifice himself for this. If Daisy was Hydra, fine, but if not? Was he, a hydra with no combat effectiveness, supposed to shout "Hail Hydra" in front of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent? Did he have a death wish?
Unfortunately, Pierce had anticipated his reaction. Large-scale personnel movements needed Crossbones' approval, but secretly moving a dozen people was still within his capabilities. After his refusal, three Hydra agents had already surrounded the bald brother, and more than a dozen figures emerged in the distance, the threat clearly implied.
"Jasper, if she is, then we confirm her identity. If she's not, I won't just watch you fall into her hands; what's there to hesitate about, hmm?" Pierce knew that from today onwards, his relationship with this subordinate was over, but he didn't care.
He had deeper plans. Whether she was or wasn't, he'd simply kill both the bald brother and Daisy together; Hydra wouldn't turn against him for dead people.
Besides the dozen or so Hydra agents who listened to him overtly, he had another ace up his sleeve, but he didn't want to use it unless absolutely necessary.
Pierce, in his lifetime, had turned countless S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into Hydra members. He once proudly boasted about Hydra comprising half of S.H.I.E.L.D. and took pride in this for many years. But at this moment, he desperately hoped Daisy was a staunch S.H.I.E.L.D. agent! Pierce didn't want to face off against the Hydra leadership; he could only pray, Daisy, please don't be Hydra!
