Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Xalin vs. Terra – The Battle of Earth and Air
The arena fell silent as Xalin stepped into the ring. He tightened his grip on his staff, eyeing his opponent—Kara, the earthbender. To Xalin, she seemed ordinary. She was a petite girl with short black hair, her eyes clouded, revealing her blindness. Xalin felt a pang of sympathy for her, thinking this might be an easy fight. After all, how hard could it be to battle someone who couldn't even see?
Terra shifted her stance, her feet firmly planted on the ground, as if she could sense his thoughts. Xalin hesitated for a moment before asking, "Hey, what are you fighting for?"
Terra tilted her head toward him, her expression unreadable. "That's a dumb question. Do I need a reason?" Her voice was sharp, almost dismissive, as if the answer should have been obvious.
Xalin frowned, sensing something deeper within her but choosing not to press. Instead, he raised his staff, readying himself. He wasn't here to get philosophical—he was here to win. He took a deep breath, his muscles tense as the match began.
Terra smirked, feeling the shift in the earth beneath her. "You're going to regret underestimating me," she muttered under her breath, loud enough for Xalin to hear.
Before Xalin could respond, Terra slammed her foot into the ground with incredible force. The arena floor trembled violently as jagged rocks erupted from the ground, speeding toward Xalin. His eyes widened, and he barely managed to leap into the air, using a gust of wind to propel himself upward. The rocks missed him by inches, crashing into the opposite side of the arena with a deafening crash.
"She's fast!" Xalin thought, realizing that this fight would not be as easy as he had anticipated.
Xalin spun his staff, gathering the air around him. He sent a quick, slicing gust of wind toward Terra, hoping to throw her off balance. But Terra didn't even flinch. She felt the vibrations in the ground and sidestepped effortlessly, dodging the attack with ease. A cocky grin spread across her face.
"You think you're powerful, huh?" Terra mocked. "You airbenders are all the same—light on your feet, but nothing without your precious wind."
Xalin gritted his teeth, irritation creeping into his thoughts. "I'm better," he shot back, feeling a vein popping on the side of his forehead. The fight was starting to get under his skin. He wasn't used to being mocked or outmaneuvered.
He stopped his attacks for a moment, taking a deep breath to calm himself. Rotating his staff in his hands, he planted it firmly into the ground, then crossed his arms and began moving them in a circular motion. The air around him swirled faster and faster, and soon, a powerful wind tornado formed in the center of the arena. The fierce winds whipped through the air, causing the spectators to gasp in awe.
Terra, still unfazed, tilted her head as if listening to the wind. "Did it get windy in here?" she said with a laugh, clearly mocking Xalin's efforts. She shifted her stance, her bare feet planted firmly on the ground. Earth began to rise around her, attaching itself to her body like armor. Within moments, she had formed an earth golem around herself, her small frame encased in solid rock. The wind from Xalin's tornado howled around her, but the weight of the earth held her firmly in place.
Xalin's eyes widened in surprise. "What?!"
Before he could react, Terra stomped her foot again, and the entire arena began to shift. The ground beneath Xalin's feet turned to quicksand, pulling him down as the earth beneath him liquefied. He struggled to keep his footing, the powerful winds of his own creation swirling chaotically around him.
Desperation kicked in. There was no way he could outmaneuver her like this. Xalin made a split-second decision. He focused inward, channeling the black flames that roared deep within him. Flames burst from his feet as he launched himself into the air, soaring above the arena like a fiery comet.
The crowd gasped in astonishment. Xalin's flames carried him higher, He hovered above the arena, his black flames burning fiercely, keeping him aloft.
"What... what is that?!" one of the spectators shouted. "Is he a firebender too?!"
Whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire. No one knew Xalin's true identity as the Luminary, but now questions were rising. How could an airbender use fire? What other powers did this mysterious boy possess?
Terra, unable to see him, stood still, her earth golem heavy but unshaken. "What's the matter?" she shouted, clearly irritated. "Hiding in the air, are we? Come down here and fight me properly!"
Xalin's fists clenched. He realized that staying in the air wouldn't be fair to her. The crowd might not have understood her abilities, but Xalin had. She didn't need her eyes—she saw through the vibrations in the ground, sensing every movement he made. But in the air, she couldn't reach him.
"Fine," Xalin muttered, lowering himself back to the arena floor as his flames extinguished. The quicksand had hardened again, and the ground was solid beneath his feet. He could feel Terra's gaze on him, even though she couldn't see.
Xalin charged forward, his hands forming a condensed fireball, the black flames swirling in his palms. He sprinted toward Terra, the fireball growing larger with every step. The heat was intense, radiating through the arena.
Terra felt the heat and quickly encased herself in a solid earth cocoon. The fireball slammed into the earth cocoon with explosive force, sending shockwaves through the arena. The sheer intensity of the flames caused the air to shimmer with heat, and cracks began to form on the surface of the cocoon.
Xalin grinned, feeling the pressure building. He was winning.
But Terra wasn't finished. She pushed back with all her strength, trying to hold the cocoon together. The heat was unbearable, and Xalin's fire threatened to tear through the earth barrier.
That's when Xalin's thoughts shifted. "I need more," he thought. The fire wasn't enough. He pulled back his flames, then extended his shadow, channeling his energy into it. His shadow shot forward like a living tendril, wrapping itself around Terra's cocoon. With a powerful yank, he ripped her from the earth and flung her out of the ring, sending her crashing into the ground outside the arena.
The crowd erupted into cheers and gasps of astonishment. Xalin had won.
Terra lay on the ground, clearly frustrated. She stood up, brushing dirt off her clothes, her face red with anger. Without a word, she stomped her foot, bending the earth to form a hole in the arena wall. She disappeared through it, the sound of the wall closing behind her echoing in the silence.
Xalin stood there, panting, a mixture of emotions swirling inside him. The fight had been intense, far more difficult than he had expected. He had underestimated Terra, and it had nearly cost him the match. But he had won, and yet, he didn't feel triumphant.
"I wanted to talk to her," Xalin muttered to himself, disappointed that she had left so quickly. There was something about Terra, something he couldn't quite put his finger on. But whatever it was, he knew he wouldn't get the chance to learn more—at least not today.
As the crowd continued to cheer, Xalin walked off the stage, his mind racing. His thoughts drifted back to the powerful opponents he had faced, and the even greater battles yet to come. But for now, he had survived.
And that was enough.
