The Ytherrian Luminary

Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The Arena of Masters

The underground arena buzzed with excitement, filled with spectators cheering and fighters testing their skills. The air was heavy with the scent of dust, sweat, and magic as benders of all kinds clashed in spectacular displays of power. Earth, air, fire, and water were all represented, each competitor pushing their abilities to the limit.

Xalin had signed up as an airbender, concealing the glowing Luminary markings on his body with simple wraps. His goal was clear: to learn earthbending. But first, he had to prove himself in this arena. His eyes lingered on the current champion—an earthbender standing tall and proud, his muscles rippling as he manipulated massive boulders with ease. Xalin wondered if this man could be the one to teach him.

"Could he be the one?" Xalin whispered to himself. "If I win enough matches, maybe I can challenge him."

But before Xalin could think further, his name was called.

"Next match: Xalin, airbender, versus Kylo, airbender!" the announcer boomed, and the crowd roared with anticipation.

Xalin stepped into the ring, gripping his staff tightly. He could feel the breeze picking up as he entered the circular pit, facing his opponent—a tall, lean airbender with short hair and a confident smirk. They began circling each other, both assuming the graceful, flowing stance of Bagua Zhang, a martial art used by airbenders for fluid movement and evasion.

Xalin held his staff at both ends, pointing it toward Kylo. He could feel the energy in the air, the anticipation of the battle brewing.

Kylo's eyes narrowed as he examined Xalin's stance. "That glider... you must've come from the air temples, huh?" His voice dripped with disdain.

Xalin kept his tone neutral. "Yeah."

"Good," Kylo sneered. "I hate monks."

Without another word, Kylo punched the air, sending two sharp gusts of wind straight toward Xalin. The wind roared as it sliced through the arena, aimed directly at him.

Xalin reacted quickly, swinging his staff downward, creating a crescent-shaped air slash that countered the attack, dispersing the gusts.

"And here I was thinking all airbenders had the same view of the world," Xalin said, his voice steady as he maintained his stance.

Kylo grinned, his eyes gleaming with malice. "We don't. Some of us don't waste time on peace."

Kylo sent another air slash toward Xalin, faster this time. Xalin shifted his weight onto one foot, raising the other as the slash passed just above him. He jumped up, forming a swirling ball of air beneath him, and landed on it in a meditative stance. His hands bumped together in a calm rhythm as the ball carried him forward at high speed, dodging Kylo's attacks with ease.

Kylo scowled, clearly annoyed by Xalin's evasive maneuvers. He decided to change tactics, summoning a mini-tornado around himself, lifting his body into the air. From above, he sent rapid wind slashes down at Xalin, hoping to catch him off guard.

Xalin's eyes flashed with determination. He leaped off his air ball, using the wind currents to run at incredible speed. His movements were graceful yet powerful, as if the air itself carried him. In a fluid motion, he lunged upward, his hands planting on the ground like a spring as he created a swirling vortex of air that shot toward Kylo, disrupting his mini-tornado and throwing him off balance.

As Xalin landed, his staff opened at the bottom, revealing a fan-like structure. With a powerful swing from the bottom up, Xalin unleashed a supercharged wind slash that ripped through the air, hitting Kylo squarely and sending him flying out of the ring.

The crowd erupted into cheers as the announcer declared, "Xalin wins!"

Xalin stood tall, breathing steadily as he closed his staff, the victory satisfying but not complete. He wasn't here for glory—he was here to learn. As he exited the ring, he noticed the next match being announced.

---

"Next match: Kairo, firebender, versus Mira, waterbender!" the announcer called out.

Xalin stopped in his tracks. He had heard of the fire and waterbenders in the arena, but seeing them in action was something else entirely. He turned his gaze toward the center of the pit, watching intently.

Kairo, the firebender, was tall with an intense, focused look on his face. His blue flames crackled with dangerous energy, a sign of his advanced firebending skills. Across from him stood Mira, a master waterbender with flowing robes, her hands already moving gracefully as she prepared to bend the water from the nearby source.

The battle began with Kairo launching a stream of blue fire toward Mira, his flames roaring like a wild beast. Mira reacted instantly, pulling water from the ground and forming a wall of ice to block the attack. The fire and ice collided with a loud hiss, steam rising between them.

Mira countered by sending sharp icicles flying toward Kairo, who dodged with incredible agility. He spun on his heel, sweeping his arms in a wide arc, creating a fire whip that lashed out toward her. Mira moved swiftly, bending the water beneath her to form a wave, riding it high above the fire whip before crashing down in front of Kairo, sending a torrent of water his way.

Kairo growled, thrusting his hands forward and splitting the wave with a blast of fire. The flames danced around him as he circled Mira, his movements precise and lethal. He launched several rapid fireballs, forcing Mira to go on the defensive. She formed water whips in each hand, slashing through the air and deflecting the fireballs with practiced ease.

Xalin watched in awe, mesmerized by the level of mastery both benders displayed. He had never seen such control over the elements. Kairo's firebending was relentless, powerful, and filled with raw intensity, while Mira's waterbending was fluid, adaptive, and almost graceful. They fought like seasoned warriors, their attacks perfectly timed and devastating.

At one point, Mira formed a massive whirlpool of water, pulling Kairo into its swirling depths. For a moment, it seemed like she had the upper hand, but Kairo's eyes flared with determination. He let out a roar, spinning in the center of the whirlpool and igniting his entire body with blue flames. The water evaporated instantly, leaving him standing in the middle of a steaming crater.

Without hesitation, Kairo formed a massive flame, spiraling it in his hands before releasing it as a flaming dragon that surged toward Mira. She barely had time to react, forming a dome of water around herself. But the sheer power of the dragon forced her back, her water dome barely holding.

With one final push, Kairo's flames broke through Mira's defenses, sending her flying out of the ring. The crowd went wild.

"Kairo wins!" the announcer declared, and the arena shook with applause.

Xalin stood there, stunned. The power, the precision, the raw elemental mastery he had just witnessed—it was beyond anything he had ever imagined. His heart raced as he realized how far he still had to go. If he were to face benders like these, even with his Luminary powers, he knew he wasn't ready.

"I'm not strong enough yet," Xalin whispered to himself. "But I will be."

As Kairo walked past him, still radiating heat from the battle, Xalin's resolve hardened. He would learn everything he could—earthbending, spirit magic, everything. The path ahead was clear, but the journey would not be easy.
