Chapter 16: Being Nostradamus could be of Great Help Part III (Z)
[A/N: Hello everyone.
Thanks to everyone who continues to read, comment, and support me with Power Stones.
New chapter. It will show the characters' vulnerable sides, provide some character development, and perhaps a few clues about the protagonist and the survivor groups.
Also, I remind you that if you want an extra chapter, with the small amount of 5000 powerstones, I will release one hahaha.]
At the base.
"Will you move the spear away from my face? It's not very courteous of you to treat the person who saved you like that", I said slowly, sounding exasperated by the ridiculousness of the situation.
"Uh-huh… It's you. What the hell happened to you?", she said, a little alarmed. I don't know if it was because she realized I was pointing a spear at her or because of how completely exhausted I looked after facing off against about 30 zombies.
"Yeah, it's me. A little mishap on my way to get supplies", I replied, maintaining my exasperated tone. I was getting a little angry at how alarmed she sounded.
"What happened? Did you run into zombies? Or maybe. People?", she asked me, scared, question after question, breathless.
"It's okay, it was a group of zombies", I replied, sounding tired. "They didn't bite you, right?!" she asked, a little more terrified than usual.
"They didn't bite me. Well, actually, they did, but they didn't make it through my clothes", I replied, not giving it much thought.
"They bit you?! You're not going to die, right? I don't want you to die… I don't know what I'd do without you", she said, quite alarmed, but the last thing she said was in a whisper, so I couldn't clearly make out what she said.
"It's okay, I'm not going to die. Now I just want to rest and take a nice shower later", I replied in a more direct tone to end the subject. I was already getting angry at her exaggerated responses.
"What a relief! For a moment, I thought I'd be alone again", she said, much more relieved, but I could tell she was still worried by the way she looked at me. "How many zombies did you fight?", "It must have been about 3, considering the state you were in", she asked with genuine curiosity and a hint of concern.
"3? No, it was a little more", I replied jokingly, trying to minimize the severity of the situation.
"More than 3?! Wow, I've seen people sadly die fighting just two of those things", she said, a little astonished. "How many was there, really?", she asked.
"Hmm… It was about 30 zombies", I replied hesitantly, but with a serious tone that emphasized I wasn't lying. Seeing how eagerly she waited for an answer from me, I couldn't answer with a lie, although I doubt, she'd believe me.
"Hahaha… I didn't think you were that self-centered. I thought you'd say 10 to brag, but 30 is crazy", she replied, clutching her stomach in laughter. I knew she wouldn't believe me, but at least I didn't lie to her. "It's your decision if you want to believe me. Anyway, we can go another day, and I'll show you the proof", I said in a somewhat provocative tone.
"Fine. We'll go another day, and you can show me", she replied with a pout. I didn't think women would still make that kind of reproachful gesture after reaching adulthood.
"Changing the subject. If you want to eat something, take something from what's available in the kitchen. If you don't like anything, you can go to the room next to mine, and there are bags of all kinds of food and sweets. You can take whatever you want from those bags", I told her.
"What about you?", she asked.
"I'll eat later. I'm exhausted", I replied, adjusting a cushion to make myself comfortable on the floor.
"Okay, no problem", she said as I watched her walk toward the kitchen. Apparently, her foot had completely healed, because she didn't seem to be limping or having any discomfort when walking.
I settled into the soft, fluffy cushion. I was just hoping to take a short nap and then go for a bath.
"Here", Anna said suddenly, handing me a chocolate bar she must have found in the kitchen. She had quickly gone to the kitchen to find something I could eat to replenish my energy.
"Thank you", I said as I took off my gloves and unwrapped the chocolate from its wrapper.
After taking my time savoring each piece of chocolate, I drifted off into a soft, sudden sleep. Or so I hoped, but since I'm only witnessing my point of view in the future in these dreams, I was still conscious.
I couldn't see anything because I'd obviously already fallen asleep, but I could hear, and if I tried hard enough, smell everything around me. But the truth is, I stopped focusing on my sense of smell. Having been through that ordeal before, and one of its consequences being covered in a pile of waste and clotted blood, I preferred not to smell this stench if I could help it.
Only a few minutes passed when I felt Anna sit down on the couch closest to where I was lying. I heard her take a couple of packages of food, or maybe candy, and begin to eat. I didn't know she was watching, but I had the feeling she was peacefully watching me sleep.
"How strange it is to see how a person who has been through a battle that could have cost them their life can sleep like a little child, so peacefully", Anna suddenly began, monologuing as she looked at me.
"You don't know how scared you made me, Alex. I don't know what I would have done if I lost you. I probably would have given up and just waited to die so I wouldn't have to spend any more time in this hell", she said, her tone a little sadder.
"I know you would do the opposite. If someone close to you dies, you would surely give everything to survive so their deaths wouldn't be without reason. I know I haven't known you for long, and that we haven't talked enough to get to know each other in depth, but I have no doubt you are that kind of person", she said softly so as not to wake me.
"I never thought I would become so attached to a stranger. But you rescued me from the same hell." "I had stayed in that hut to die of hunger, without hope. However, you came like an angel to save me. Although you were a little brusque and coarse when you spoke, even those details make me want to be near you", he said in a somewhat passionate tone.
"I just hope to stay by your side as long as I can", he said as he touched my face. I moved to avoid touch, but with no signs of waking up.
[A/N: Here's a bit about Anna's romantic development with the protagonist. Obviously, it will be better explained once real life coincides with this dream date.]
After that, Anna didn't speak again, and I only listened as she fell asleep as well. I only heard a small snore accompanying my exaggerated sighs of exhaustion, as if it were an orchestra with different voices.
After a little over an hour, I woke up and got up quickly. I noticed Anna lying on the couch near where I was sleeping. I covered her with a soft blanket to keep her from getting sick.
Then I walked to my room and took off all my clothes, which were already starting to stink. Then I headed to the shower to finally get rid of all the marks left from my previous battle.
In the bathroom, I looked in the mirror and noticed how dirty my face was, with traces of blood and other debris I can't even imagine. I checked my arms, and left the marks behind. I saw new bite marks adorning them, leaving a slightly purple hue. After washing my face to remove all the dirt, I began to shower slowly. I watched the water run over my tired body, every muscle shivering comfortingly, and the cold making me feel a little relaxed and taking my mind off the difficult situation I had been through.
After almost half an hour under the water, and noticing that I was already excessively clean, I got out of the shower, dried myself off, and got dressed. Then I went to my bedroom, took out my cycling suit, and took it out of the house to wash later.
Apparently, I wasn't planning on eating a full lunch, as I went to the kitchen and only took out a couple of crackers from one of the cupboards to satisfy my momentary hunger.
I went back to find my spear, and with only what I was wearing, I went out again to check the surroundings.
"It seems there's no rest for those who want to live in hell", I thought.
I first headed toward the village's back gate, which is the place where I returned from my epic journey. I saw that there was nothing suspicious and quickly checked the houses near the base again. I also checked the traps around the base. I did all this slowly, as I didn't seem to want to waste much energy rushing the checks.
After a little over an hour had passed, I returned to the house and noticed Anna waiting for me sitting on the couch.
"Is everything okay outside?", she asked as soon as she saw me.
"All right. I'll go make dinner. Can you arrange a couple of plates and utensils for us to eat later?", I spoke.
"Sure, no problem", she replied with a smile.
After finishing preparing everything in the kitchen, I walked to the dining room where everything was set up. I served the dishes with delicious pasta in white sauce and brought some drinks from the kitchen.
We ate peacefully, without unnecessary conversation or annoying noises.
"That's right! I forgot to tell you. I was playing around with your portable radio earlier, and they tried to talk to you from one of the channels you had advertised. They were specifically looking for you and said they needed you to go to their base. I tried to answer, but they didn't talk again", she said, a little alarmed.
"You should have told me earlier. Which channel specifically?", I said, sounding a little worried.
"Don't you remember how you got here before? I forgot because of the scare you gave me. The channel was between 7 and 8; there's only one dot on that part of the dial", she said, sounding angry at what I had told her.
"It's okay. I'm sorry, I was just a little worried about those people who called you. They probably didn't answer because they heard someone else talking on that frequency", I said gently, trying to calm her down.
"Who are they?", she asked.
"It's a group I've helped before on a few occasions… You could consider them friends", I said, sounding evasive at the end.
"Friends, so… Hmm, and I thought you were a lone wolf", she said, sounding a little playful.
"I'm not a loner. The problem is I don't feel safe hanging around a lot of people", I said rather roughly. It seemed like I was a little annoyed at being called a lone wolf.
"I wasn't judging you; it's just the impression you give off", she said, trying to avoid the subject. "Are you going to help them?", she asked, a little worried.
"Yes, I'll go first thing tomorrow morning", I replied.
"Can I come with you?", she asked me expectantly.
"No, I'm going to make this trip alone", I said, looking her straight in the eyes.
[A/N: CHAPTER COMPLETED
What?! Does the protagonist know other groups? Does he have friends?
It seems that the protagonist does not live his life as we thought.
Comment, if you were expecting this kind of story development.
If anyone tells me what kind of life the protagonist will lead in the apocalypse, I'll upload an extra chapter.
