Chapter 27: Big Problems
"Lady Lihua, how did it go?"
After leaving the coffee shop that was a front for her secret base, a girl with light brown hair quickly approached Lihua, asking with concern. "Did that guy agree?"
"..." Lihua could only shake her head at the girl's worried question. "No, he refused... Eleanor, go back with the others. I'll think of something else."
That petite girl with the brown hair was Eleanor, the girl Lihua had met at the Black Death camp.
Lihua had saved many Black Death patients, including Eleanor and her mother. When her mother was finally cured, Eleanor had contracted the Black Death again due to living in such an environment. Her condition was severe.
In the end, Lihua took care of Eleanor herself to prevent further infection. Her actions made Eleanor's favorability skyrocket. Eleanor would carry out any orders that Lihua gave her.
Unfortunately, although Eleanor's mother had survived the Black Death, she had passed away from overwork a short time later.
Lihua didn't know how to take care of children, so she had asked Otto to find a family that could adopt Eleanor. In the end, she was adopted by a member of the Schariac family and was named Eleanor Schariac.
What made Lihua a bit amused was that Eleanor's favorability was very high. She often did things that were beyond Lihua's expectations.
The secret Valkyrie squad hidden in the dark was one such example. Even though it was supposedly under Lihua's command, Lihua didn't even know about it until two months ago.
When Eleanor accidentally learned about Lihua's plan and that Lihua was struggling with how to eliminate the Schicksal executives, she stepped up and said that she had been secretly training an elite squad for Lihua, ready for deployment at any time.
The members of the squad were from all walks of life. There were members from the three great families and those from the common folk. What they all had in common was their high combat ability and unbelievably high favorability and respect for Lihua.
It made Lihua suspect that Eleanor had brainwashed them.
These Valkyries were usually scattered across Schicksal, but when Lihua needed them, they could come together from their different positions to carry out missions.
When they learned that they would actually be working for Lihua, the Valkyries were excited to the point of tears. They wanted to go to the Schicksal Archbishop the next day.
Unfortunately, it seemed that their wishes would be unfulfilled. If Otto didn't cooperate, it would be difficult for Lihua to execute her plan. She couldn't even gather all of the corrupt leaders in one place.
"Lady Lihua, if that jerk Otto doesn't want to help, then we'll do it ourselves!"
Eleanor said angrily. "Let's just march into headquarters and take the Archbishop's chair!"
Ugh, maybe I shouldn't have told her the story of the Water Margin? Why is she acting like Li Kui? [Li Kui is a character from the Water Margin known for his violent personality.]
Lihua sighed wearily, and rubbed Eleanor's head. "Be good. Killing the Schicksal Archbishop won't solve the problem, and you'd suffer too many losses."
"Go back for now. I'll think of something else."
After some persuasion, Eleanor left reluctantly, leaving Lihua standing in the middle of the street feeling lost.
Otto doesn't want to help, and he said that Kallen wouldn't either... If that's the case, changing the world is going to be really difficult.
But he's my friend. Otto wouldn't report me, right?
If he did, I wouldn't care. I didn't tell him about Eleanor and her team. There's nothing to be worried about if I'm alone.
Ugh, maybe I'll try asking Kallen…
Lihua, who was going to look for Kallen at the Kaslana house, took a few steps before suddenly retreating.
Wait, is there something wrong with my eyes?
Did I just see Kallen and Viktor together?
"How's the research coming along?"
Sitting in the tunnel of the underground lab, Kallen asked without turning around.
Viktor was very respectful. He lowered his head and said, "Everything is going smoothly. If nothing unexpected happens, it should be done in a week."
Although the girl in front of him looked young, she was Schicksal's strongest Valkyrie and the head of the Kaslana family. Everyone at Schicksal would shake in fear when she stomped her feet.
Viktor always showed the utmost respect to those who could take his life at any moment.
But Kallen wasn't thinking about Viktor at all. She answered indifferently. Her thoughts were elsewhere.
To be honest, Kallen hated this place.
She hated the smell of blood, the dirty deals, the human experiments, and the way they treated human beings like lab rats.
If she could, she wanted to destroy this place.
But she couldn't, because she could become stronger because of this place.
Kallen knew the research on the mysterious black box was dangerous, but she also knew that she would be able to become stronger if she could control that energy.
She would become so strong that she could protect Lihua from everyone.
Even now, whenever Kallen slept at night, she still dreamt of Lihua being tortured by the immortal, and there was nothing she could do.
The scenes in the dream were more cruel. Otto wouldn't arrive, and Lihua would be choked to death.
When Kallen woke up from the nightmare, she was grateful that it was a dream but was still overwhelmed by a sense of fear.
It was a dream this time, but what about next time? If she encounters such a powerful opponent again, what should I do?
Do I just keep watching Lihua die in front of me?
No, that must never happen again!
She had to become stronger, so strong that she was stronger than everyone else!
Only then she could protect Lihua.
That's why Kallen decided to use any means necessary. She knew that the black box might bring misfortune, and she knew about the human experimentation that Schicksal was doing in secret. But she didn't say anything. She just chose to turn a blind eye and remain silent.
She wasn't the one who was doing those things. She was just not stopping them.
Kallen had been trying to convince herself that. Even though she knew that she was just deceiving herself.
