chapter 153 - Madwoman
【Oscar Iris】
**【Founder of the Iris Duke family. He sealed the ancient demon that threatened humanity with his own hands.】
Anna suddenly stopped in front of a photo hanging in the hallway.
The mansion dungeon was far from intact. The name "Duke’s Mansion" seemed hollow, as battle traces remained everywhere, and occasionally tumors appeared on the ceiling. Scratch marks were visible on the walls and floors, and there were dried, blood-like stains here and there.
Amidst all this, the frame remained perfectly intact, so Anna looked at it absentmindedly.
It was a photo of a middle-aged man with a distinguished beard, wearing a uniform that suited him well. His eyes were filled with justice and conviction, and while the frame had some traces of time, there was no evidence it had been tampered with.
"Anna, did you find something?"
Vincent spoke up to Anna, who was standing there blankly.
"Oh, no… it’s just that this frame is too pristine, which feels a bit strange…"
"It doesn’t look like a gimmick. But yeah, it is strange, as you said."
Vincent agreed with Anna’s opinion, but shot her a sharp glance.
"However, investigating this can wait. Right now, the priority is retrieving our comrade's body before Aurora does."
"I know, I know…"
Anna glanced around, but instinctively, she knew that Laura and Nalim weren’t here.
Vincent agreed with that observation.
'They’re moving too fast.'
Vincent thought to himself.
Currently, Vincent and his team were chasing after Laura and Nalim. However, they hadn't seen them anywhere.
It was logically impossible.
While Vincent’s team had entered the mansion, carefully avoiding monsters, and made their way to the rooftop, Aurora and Nalim had climbed the walls to reach the rooftop instead.
This meant they had updated their checkpoint without encountering any significant resistance, but not facing difficulties wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
Having skipped over all the processes, Aurora and Nalim couldn’t have possibly known the mansion’s layout. They wouldn’t know which monsters resided within it either.
They had no information, yet they had somehow managed to outpace Vincent’s team.
This led Vincent to consider three possibilities.
Perhaps there were no monsters nearby, allowing them to move quickly.
Or, despite monsters being present, they simply ignored them and kept moving forward.
Or, they had taken another route.
The first possibility required an incredible amount of luck, and the second possibility seemed too reckless.
Therefore, Vincent’s team was exploring the area, leaning toward the third possibility.
"Vincent, I haven’t found anyone nearby~."
"Nobody over here either."
Sina and Noah came over, seemingly having found nothing either.
"Could there be a side path?"
"No, it’s just a straight line to the stairs from here."
Sina answered like that.
The mansion dungeon was mostly made up of corridors and rooms. There weren’t many places to hide, and the corridors were mainly one-way. Of course, sometimes there were forks, but it seemed there were no side paths in this area.
So, they had each investigated a room, but they still hadn’t found Laura or Nalim.
'Secret passage… It can’t be, right?'
Vincent, with his Exploration job, could map out the layout of the area. However, despite using his skill, it seemed there were no secret passages.
That meant the third possibility could be ruled out.
'…Those crazy women just bulldozed through, didn’t they?'
That was the only conclusion he could come to.
Whether there were monsters or not, they just went forward.
Of course, in the process, they would have attracted a lot of monster aggro, but Aurora wouldn’t care about that. Whether monsters followed them or not, she just ran and ran.
There was no other conclusion to draw.
'The problem is, it’s plausible…'
Aurora and "forcing through" was a combination of words that seemed to fit perfectly.
In fact, she seemed like the kind of person who could survive even if a tsunami hit. While he didn’t know her that well, Aurora was definitely a bit off, and Nalim wasn’t much different.
Vincent was just having trouble accepting this reality, which he couldn’t quite believe.
No matter how much he thought about it, the same conclusion kept coming up, and eventually, he would have to accept it.
"...Let’s speed up."
Vincent said to the group, and started walking faster.
The fact that Aurora had managed to attract monster aggro and moved ahead was still hard to believe, but if it really happened… it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for Vincent.
This meant all the monsters around here were likely following Aurora, which made this area safer. Therefore, Vincent thought it was better to prioritize speed over caution.
As Sina and Noah followed behind Vincent, walking faster, only Anna felt a sense of unease.
'It feels like I’m missing something.'
Having spent so much time with Laura, Anna was the first to catch on to this feeling.
But Anna couldn’t figure out exactly what was missing.
Unfortunately, Anna wasn’t the sharpest, and she wasn’t exactly the most observant person either.
So, as no one realized the truth, the group continued to advance.
Before long, they found Changyoung’s body.
Changyoung’s body, seemingly hacked to pieces. One arm and one leg were missing, and the arm was nowhere to be found.
However, one leg was lying a little further off, rolling on the floor.
'…I don’t see Aurora.'
Vincent found this odd. There didn’t seem to be any side paths, so Aurora should have passed through this area as well.
Yet, the body was left abandoned.
'If I were Aurora…'
He would have disposed of Changyoung’s body. He wouldn’t have let it get into Vincent’s hands.
Yet, the body remained almost intact, meaning one of two things. Either Aurora had no intention of hiding the body, or she hadn’t had the time to do so.
Vincent thought it was the latter.
If Aurora had been chased by monsters, she wouldn’t have had the time to hide the body.
It seemed like Aurora was leaning more and more toward being a crazy woman.
Vincent let out a sigh and gave orders to Elenoa.
"Noah, you pick up that leg."
"Yes!"
Noah approached to pick up Changyoung’s leg.
Then Noah died.
Fwoosh!
"Huh?"
A hole appeared in Noah’s chest.
Vincent, Anna, and Sina didn’t understand what was happening, and even Elenoa, who was dying in real time, was confused.
Then a knife was pulled from Noah’s chest, and Elenoa, now a corpse, collapsed to the ground.
"Ukufa okumnandi! Ngithumele omunye umuntu nawe!"
Was she once a maid working in the Duke’s family?
But where her face should have been, there was the head of a beast, speaking incomprehensible words.
"...Damn it."
Vincent muttered, realizing he had been too complacent.
He had thought all the monsters around here were aggro’d by Aurora, but it seemed one had slipped away.
If he had acted more cautiously, things might have turned out differently, but what was done was done. Vincent looked at Sina.
"Machina! Your skills?"
"I-I have them…"
"Then let’s use them! While I retrieve Noah, you take care of the monster!"
Sina rushed toward the beast maid.
Slash!
Machina died.
From somewhere, a scream echoed.
Had Nalim also heard the scream? She gathered her expression.
"It’s time to move."
I stood up and opened the window.
"You don’t need to follow. Just check the rope’s condition, just in case."
I checked my equipment one last time. To be more specific, I checked the condition of the 'harness.'
A harness is a piece of equipment that connects my body to the rope. If I just tied the rope around # Nоvеlight # my waist, it’d be uncomfortable. That’s why the harness was necessary.
After making sure everything was perfect, I jumped out of the window.
Judging from the direction of the scream, it didn’t seem too far.
As I approached the source of the sound, I saw the lifeless bodies of Noah and Sina.
And surrounded by monsters, Anna and Vincent.
"Ah."
This can’t be helped.
I broke the window and stretched my legs.
Then, pulling hard, I yanked the beast-headed maid’s neck into my legs.
"Ukufa! Ukufa!"
The maid shouted something incomprehensible, but I didn’t care.
I applied more force with my legs and strangled the beast maid’s neck.
Pulling my body backward, I successfully dragged the beast maid out of the window.
By extending my legs again, I sent the maid plummeting.
Thud!
From the ground below, red blood splattered out.
"This doesn’t look good. Do you need my help?"
"...Aurora."
Surrounded by monsters, Vincent sighed and looked at me.
"...You were still climbing the walls, huh?"
"Of course, wasn’t it obvious?"
The mansion dungeon was mostly one-way paths.
If you encountered monsters, there were few places to escape or take cover.
Therefore, moving through the mansion corridors was risky.
Vincent and his group were currently in real-time danger.
On the other hand, moving through the mansion’s outer walls was much safer.
Since I can climb ropes, why would I need to move through the corridors?
Vincent was trapped in the corner of the corridor, unable to escape, but I could easily run away by climbing the ropes.
"Do you need help? Of course, it’s not free."
I smiled and casually pulled out a flashbang.
Vincent sighed.
"I’ll give you the ASMR mic! Just, please save me! At least save me!!"
Anna begged for her life.
