chapter 43
Forty-Three: Today’s Maid is a Bit Cold
By the time Yao Shi and He Xue said their goodbyes and left the hospital, it was already midnight.
Wu Liang, who had been waiting outside the hospital, waved at Yao Shi.
“Let’s go, it’s time to head back.”
Wu Liang, with a cigarette dangling from his lips, lit it up, inhaling the nicotine as the smoke curled through his nostrils.
He wasn’t a chain smoker, nor was he particularly fond of smoking; he just enjoyed the feeling of being enveloped in mist.
It allowed him a momentary escape into his own little world, undisturbed, to relax.
“Young Master! What are you doing!”
Yao Shi, upon seeing this, snatched the cigarette from Wu Liang’s mouth and threw it on the ground, stomping it out fiercely.
“Young Master, please hand over the cigarettes and lighter to me.”
With furrowed brows and a stern expression, Yao Shi coldly demanded the remaining stash from Wu Liang.
When had the Young Master started smoking? As his personal maid, she hadn’t even noticed.
It was her negligence; cigarettes, akin to drugs, must not be allowed to taint the Young Master.
“Cough cough… It’s just a smoke…”
Wu Liang coughed due to Yao Shi’s abrupt actions, puzzled by her reaction.
He looked bewildered at the extinguished cigarette butt on the ground.
Was it just a cigarette? Was there a need for Yao Shi to be so furious?
“Cigarettes are a kind of slow poison, it’s not too late for you to quit now.”
Yao Shi opened her palm with a displeased look, signaling Wu Liang to surrender the rest.
“…”
Wu Liang’s lips twitched as he stared at the earnest and imposing Yao Shi before him.
After hesitating for a while, Wu Liang let out a long sigh and slowly took out the cigarette from his pocket.
Oh, my dear cigarette, this is not me abandoning you, it’s a desperate choice I had to make.
But rest assured, I will find an opportunity to indulge you in secret later.
“Young Master, I hope you won’t take Yao Shi’s words as wind past your ears.”
Yao Shi knew Wu Liang wouldn’t give up because of this, but she couldn’t always supervise the Young Master, so she could only hope that he would be self-disciplined.
“I will, but what were you and He Xue talking about just now? You talked for quite a while.”
Wu Liang touched his nose awkwardly to change the subject, not wanting to be lectured by Yao Shi here.
He was all too familiar with Yao Shi’s preaching, which was akin to a tight spell.
“It was just some trivial matters of daily life, and it was mostly Miss He Xue speaking.”
“I was just silently listening to what Miss He Xue had to say.”
Seeing Wu Liang shift the topic, Yao Shi was dissatisfied but didn’t say much more.
After all, it wasn’t the first or second time the Young Master had brushed her off, and she was already used to it.
“So, what do you think of He Xue as a person, just your one-sided impression of her?”
Seeing that Yao Shi wasn’t dwelling on the matter anymore, Wu Liang breathed a sigh of relief.
However, he hadn’t expected Yao Shi to be able to talk with He Xue for so long.
“Cheerful, optimistic, innocent, friendly, gentle, and understanding.”
Like coining words and sentences, Yao Shi coldly commented on He Xue.
But she had to admit, her first impression of He Xue was indeed good.
The girl was indeed outstanding, but that alone was not enough.
He Xue could only be considered above average among ordinary girls, but that was far from enough to become the daughter-in-law of the Wu family. He Xue still needed to continue refining herself.
And for some reason, Yao Shi felt an inexplicable resistance towards He Xue deep down.
It should have been a joyous occasion for the Young Master to find a partner, but the twisted feeling from deep within made her very irritable.
She was merely a servant, so why did she harbor such disloyal thoughts?
“Ah haha… that’s quite good…”
Wu Liang wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but he felt the temperature around them had dropped significantly.
He didn’t know if it was the evening breeze or something else.
All he knew was that the chill surrounding him had grown colder and more piercing.
“Cough cough, let’s head back quickly.”
A sense of foreboding suddenly crept up on Wu Liang.
Looking at Yao Shi, who stood motionless in front of him like an ice sculpture, Wu Liang swallowed hard.
I always felt that Yao Shi’s aura had changed, as if a faint black mist was entwining her.
The bone-chilling coldness was like countless silver needles piercing deep into the marrow.
“Young Master.”
Yao Shi, who suddenly spoke up, stopped Wu Liang, who was about to leave.
The coldness, like a chilling wind from the netherworld, made Wu Liang shiver uncontrollably, his arms breaking out in goosebumps.
“May I be so bold as to ask you a question, Young Master? How do you view Miss He Xue, and why do you want to help her?”
Yao Shi leaned her head, her hair veiling her eyes, making it difficult to discern her expression at the moment.
Standing alone, Yao Shi called out softly, her ethereal and cool words tinged with loneliness.
“Um… She’s my classmate… that’s why I…”
“I understand that, but that’s not what I mean. What I want to know is whether you harbor any other feelings for her, such as affection.”
Yao Shi interrupted Wu Liang’s explanation, stepping lightly to his side.
Her eyes, dark as onyx, were as dull as stagnant water, even somewhat murky.
“I have Miss He Xue’s contact information here; do you need it, Young Master?”
Her arm, white as jade, rested in front of Wu Liang, the grey-white screen of the phone casting her cheeks in a pallid light.
“I… I’ll pass… It would be better for you two to have a good chat…”
Wu Liang stammered, even though Yao Shi’s stunningly beautiful face was within reach.
Yet, at this moment, he felt no desire whatsoever, instead wanting to flee from Yao Shi’s presence as far as possible.
The cold breath from her mouth was like an icy blade brushing against his cheek.
Wu Liang always felt that if he had agreed to Yao Shi just now, his heart would be pierced by a steel knife in the next second.
“Is that so? That’s truly a pity. We should head back, Young Master.”
Yao Shi, taking a deep breath, forcibly suppressed the strange feeling in her heart and quickly walked away from Wu Liang.
She had only intended to ask the Young Master casually about his thoughts on Miss He Xue.
But why did she suddenly become so unfamiliar, so much so that even she herself felt lost.
“Ah… um… let’s go back…”
Wu Liang, watching Yao Shi’s retreating figure with a pale face, responded, while his clothes were already drenched with cold sweat.
The evening breeze blew on Wu Liang, his back feeling chilly… and his heart, too, felt chilly…
