Chapter 7: "A Day of Adjustments"
Snake Calendar, Year 2025
8th Day of August - Early Morning
The City of Nova Asta - Inner City
Winchester Family Household
The morning sun peeked through the curtains as Accel Winchester groaned and sat up in bed. Today was his second day of college, and he wanted to be on time. He stretched, grabbed his uniform from the closet, and made his way downstairs, where the smell of breakfast filled the air.
"Morning, Accel," his mother, Elaine Winchester, greeted with a warm smile. She was seated at the dining table, sipping coffee. Elaine's system, Lawyer (Uncommon Tier), had been the backbone of her successful legal career. Beside her, his father, Thomas Winchester, was scrolling through his tablet. Thomas had the Businessman (Uncommon Tier) system, which helped him manage their family-owned retail company.
"Morning, Mom. Morning, Dad," Accel replied, taking a seat.
His two younger brothers were already at the table, diving into their meals. The 16-year-old, Liam, was energetic and always eager to discuss the latest trends in tech and gaming. The youngest, 14-year-old Jacob, was quieter but no less curious. Neither had awakened their systems yet, as they were still a few years away from the usual age.
"Don't forget your lunchbox," Elaine reminded me as she passed plates around.
"Thanks, Mom," Accel said, starting to eat.
"You're adjusting to college life okay?" Thomas asked, looking up briefly.
Accel nodded. "So far, so good. There's still a lot to get used to, but I'll manage."
After finishing breakfast, Accel grabbed his bag, exchanged goodbyes with his family, and headed out. Walking to the bus stop, he reflected on how fortunate he was to have supportive parents and siblings, even if they didn't fully understand the pressures of his Archivist (Common Tier) system.
Main Lecture Halls Building (5305) - Morning
Accel arrived at Unity College of System Studies just before 9 a.m., weaving through the bustling hallways toward his first class. The morning air had been calm, but inside the college, the energy was anything but. Students rushed to find their rooms, some flustered by the chaos of mismatched schedules and last-minute changes.
His first class of the day, "Introduction to Historical Systems," began at 9 a.m. sharp. The professor, a tall man with graying hair, started with a brief orientation, outlining what the students could expect for the semester.
"You'll learn how different systems influenced historical events and how modern society builds upon those foundations," the professor explained.
Accel took notes diligently, though the class size was smaller than expected. Some students, he overheard, were stuck in conflicting schedules or unable to attend due to miscommunication.
Main Lecture Halls Building (9103) - Late Morning
The session ended at 10:30 a.m., and Accel made his way to his next class, "Fundamentals of System Ethics." The classroom was nearly empty except for a handful of students. They waited for the professor, but as time passed, it became clear no one was coming.
"This keeps happening," a student muttered nearby. "They're short on staff, and some professors are handling three or four different classes."
Accel sighed but stayed until the scheduled end time, noon, just in case. When no instructor showed up, he left for lunch.
Cafeteria Nexus - Noon
The cafeteria was a mix of chatter and complaints. Students shared stories of their own missed classes or being assigned to groups without proper guidance. Accel quickly finished his meal and checked his schedule for the afternoon.
Main Lecture Halls Building (4201) - Early Afternoon
At 1:30 p.m., he headed to "Basic Archivist Practices," an elective tailored to students with knowledge-focused systems. The professor, a soft-spoken woman with a kind demeanor, greeted the class warmly. She explained the syllabus, emphasizing the practical applications of archivist systems in organizing and preserving knowledge.
"I know some of you may feel your systems aren't as impressive as others," she said, "but remember, even the smallest tools can make a big difference in the right hands."
Accel found her words reassuring and continued to take notes. The class lasted until 3 p.m., and by the end, he felt more confident about what lay ahead.
Transportation Hub Sector C - Afternoon
The remainder of his schedule for the day showed no more classes, a relief considering how disorganized things had been. As he left the college, Accel couldn't help but think about the challenges the institution faced. While Unity College's reputation for fostering knowledge and innovation was well-earned, it was clear the logistics needed improvement.
After that, Accel went to the Transportation Hub where he will go home since his schedule for this day was only three elective classes, but tomorrow might be a bit difficult because that will be the start of the practical task that will happen and hope he could survive despite having an Archivist System.
