Chapter 13: "Immersed in the Archives"
Snake Calendar, Year 2025
12th Day of August, Morning
Unity College of System Studies, Somewhere in the Main Lecture Halls
The day started quietly for Accel Winchester. The usual bustle of students heading to classes was present, the morning brought an unexpected announcement: classes were canceled due to an urgent council meeting among the professors. While many students took this as an opportunity to relax, Accel saw it differently—a rare chance to explore the vast campus.
"Is there a library on campus?" he asked a senior student nearby.
The senior, a tall girl with a calm demeanor, nodded. "Yeah, it's called the Archives and Knowledge Vault. It's one of the best facilities in Unity College. You'll find it in the central sector of the campus. Just head straight past the Main Lecture Halls, then turn left when you see the grand fountain."
"Thanks!" Accel said, nodding politely before heading off in the direction given.
Unity College of System Studies, Unity College Grand Library
When Accel stepped inside the Archives and Knowledge Vault, he was awestruck. The sheer scale of the facility was overwhelming. Towering shelves of books lined the walls, interspersed with holographic terminals glowing softly in shades of blue and white. The air carried the faint scent of old parchment mingled with the sterile tang of advanced technology.
A librarian approached him, a man in his early thirties wearing rectangular glasses and a friendly smile. "First time here?"
"Yeah," Accel admitted. "I was told this place has records on system evolution and related topics."
The librarian nodded. "You've come to the right place. Your student ID will grant you access to most of the materials. If you're looking for a starting point, try Section B4 for basic system mechanics or Section D2 for elemental manipulations."
Accel thanked him and quickly signed the necessary application forms to access the library's resources. He was assigned a small, secluded desk surrounded by shelves.
Somewhere in the Section B4 and Section D2
For the next five hours, Accel immersed himself in reading. He began with books and records on basic system mechanics, learning more about how User Systems interacted with energy flows, adaptability, and combat scenarios. As his Scan and Store skill activated quietly with each page turn, his Auto-Adaptation skill worked tirelessly in the background, analyzing and processing the information.
By the time he paused for a break, he noticed an update in his system interface:
1. Knowledge Attribute: 10 (+6)
2. Knowledge Analysis Proficiency: Beginner Third Level
He leaned back in his chair, letting out a soft exhale. "Not bad," he muttered, impressed by the progress. The constant flow of information began shaping his understanding of systems in ways he hadn't anticipated.
Lunch Break
At noon, Accel reluctantly left the Archives to grab a quick lunch at a nearby café on campus. It was a solitary meal; most of his friends had either stayed in their dorms or taken the day off to relax. But Accel didn't mind. His mind was still racing with everything he had learned that morning.
Afternoon Session
After lunch, Accel returned to the Archives with a renewed focus. This time, he sought out sections related to Energy Manipulation and Fire Manipulation, eager to delve deeper into these subjects.
He found a book titled "Basic Fundamentals of Flame Control," which immediately piqued his interest. The skill was relatively simple, allowing the user to understand and learn basic magic skills for Fire Element, Fire Control, and Fire Manipulation. Since it's talking about Basic Fundamentals, learning and understanding them might be easy for those users that are known to use magic spells, unlike Accel who is an Archivist and he needs to understand the data and knowledge in order for him to use the skill.
As Accel read through the book, his Scan and Store skill absorbed the content, while his Auto-Adaptation began piecing the information together. The text detailed how flame control worked as an extension of energy manipulation, requiring precise control over the user's internal energy. Because of that, both his Scan and Store Neural Commands proficiency level increased from Beginner Second Level to Beginner Third Level.
An update from the Archivist System appeared stating that:
1. Neural Command: (Scan) (Beginner Third Level)
Energy Cost: 5 -> 4 ENCO (Lessen Energy Cost)
Cooldown: 1 minute -> 50 seconds (Lessen the Cooldown)
Skill Time Limit: 30 seconds -> 45 seconds (Increase Scan Time Usage)
2. Neural Command: (Store) (Beginner Third Level)
Energy Cost: 5 -> 10 ENCO (Increase Energy Cost)
Cooldown: 1 hour -> 55 minutes (Lessen Cooldown)
Maximum Store Limit: Once Per Skill, Spell, Memory... (No Changes)
3. Neural Command (Kindle Spark) (Beginner First Level) (New)
Energy Cost: 10 ENCO
Cooldown: 30 seconds
Damage: 5 Hitpoints
Effects: (1) Gives light from dark places by 0.5 meters and (2) when Accel uses the Kindle Spark to the enemy they deal damage and have a 1%/3% chance of getting a burn effect that deals 10 damage per 3 seconds.
4. Auto-Adaptation: (Knowledge Analysis) (Beginner Third Level)
Activation: For every 1 hour of reading books, ancient texts, or holographic writings, Knowledge +2. When Accel's Knowledge reached Knowledge (25), permanently increased his Energy by +5 and Luck by +5.
Effects: 15% chance to gain the ability to understand otherwise incomprehensible texts.
He felt a flicker of excitement at the notification but quickly realized that mastery of the skill required a deep understanding of Energy Manipulation. While the knowledge he had gained so far was substantial, it wasn't enough to unlock the full potential of the skill. The reason why mastering Energy Manipulation is important is because it's like a buff effect for all Neural Command Skills, like increasing their effect, damage, skill usage, and many more.
