Chapter 109: The Turbulent Wano Country
It happened one night.
Izo and Kanata were discussing gifts to celebrate the birth of the Rommel Emperor's first child when hurried footsteps echoed in the hallway. A figure burst into the office without even knocking.
It was Scotch.
"What's the matter? Why are you in such a hurry?"
"This is bad, Kanata! Izo too! Oden's Vivre Card is shrinking!!"
"What?!"
Izo reacted to Scotch's words and immediately dashed out of the room towards the room where the Vivre Card was kept.
Kanata, left behind, didn't seem as panicked. "When did you notice?" she asked calmly.
"Just now. I don't usually check, but I happened to see it today…"
"I see. But just because it shrunk a little doesn't mean he's dead."
Even so, a shrinking Vivre Card meant its owner was injured.
Just who was he fighting?
Kanata had a hunch. Kaido.
She disliked Oden, but she owed a debt of gratitude to his father, Sukiyaki. She had considered crushing Kaido's entire crew when he left Wano, but… that man had been captured multiple times by the Marines and Linlin and had still survived. There had to be something more to him than just brute strength.
She had nearly killed him during their previous encounter, but she hadn't been able to take his head. His tenacity was astonishing.
"…I left Wano to that idiot. I won't interfere… But he's probably fighting Kaido."
"Do you think he can win?"
"Who knows. If it was the Kaido I fought and the Oden of that time, Oden would win nine times out of ten… If Kaido hasn't changed, that is."
There was no such thing as cowardice in a pirate battle.
If victory was determined solely by strength, Kanata would have been dead long ago.
Besides, she had fought Kaido over ten years ago. His bounty had increased significantly since then. His strength must have also grown.
"I hope I'm just worrying over nothing."
She finished her lukewarm tea and instructed them to observe the situation, then ended her workday.

Three days later.
A paled face Izo stared at the Vivre Card, which was on the verge of burning out. Kanata and the other executives gathered around him.
It had been three days since Scotch's report. The Vivre Card had remained in a critical state, shrinking ever so slightly. Had Oden been defeated? Or had he won, but sustained injuries so severe that his Vivre Card was on the verge of disappearing…?
Either way, Oden was undoubtedly on the brink of death.
Kanata had George and Scotch leave the room and instructed them to gather all their forces, including those stationed elsewhere.
"Whether he won or lost, he's not long for this world. Send out scouts."
"Are you sure about this?"
"If he won and is simply dying, we won't interfere. If he lost and is dying, we'll move after Oden is dead."
"…Will Izo and Zen accept that?"
In a sense, it was akin to abandoning him. Scotch frowned, voicing his disapproval, but Kanata glared at him.
He instinctively took a step back, intimidated by her red eyes, but Kanata immediately grabbed him by the collar and pulled him closer.
"He said he would handle it himself. I don't recall making a promise with someone who would break his word when his life is on the line."
"…You're a scary woman."
Scotch scratched his head, defeated by her harsh words.
He nodded, and Kanata released him. "Hurry up and prepare," she said.
George nodded as well, and they both left to carry out her orders.
Even Kanata had her own thoughts on the matter, but… if a man gave his word, then she would honor it. That was her way of showing mercy.
Even if it meant his death.
"…Stubborn fool."
To whom were those words directed?
Kanata's words vanished into thin air, leaving only silence.
***
In the end, Oden didn't survive.
The Vivre Card turned to ash. Izo and Zen were consumed by grief, but Kanata urged them to prepare.
She gathered the Twilight Pirates' forces, scattered across the world, and began preparing for war. The Marines, naturally, detected their movements, and Sengoku contacted her.
'What are you planning with all those forces? Are you starting a war?'
"I'm not going to do anything that would harm you. I'm going to take Kaido's head. Just sit back and watch."
'Kaido's? …It's unusual for you to be so emotional.'
"Yes, there's something that I can't forgive… I'll crush the Beasts Pirates, but there's a chance Linlin might take advantage of the situation. Will the Marines dispatch surveillance ships if they're interested?"
'…We can do that.'
The Warlord position was convenient in situations like this.
While they were technically pirates appointed by the government, the Twilight Pirates' contributions were on a completely different level from the other Warlords.
Even the Marines, to a certain extent, trusted Kanata.
She entrusted the Marines with handling Linlin, her only concern, and set sail.
The Sombrero served as their flagship, leading the Twilight Pirates' main force of approximately 5,000 men. In addition, they were accompanied by 22 subordinate pirate crews. Nearly 30,000 men set sail for Wano.
They crushed any who dared to obstruct their path – Sea Kings, pirates, anyone. They were a storm, an unstoppable force of nature. The darkness of twilight, swallowing everything in its path, reached out to Wano.
– After a few days of sailing, the Twilight Pirates arrived at Wano Country.
There were two ways to enter Wano. Climb the waterfall, or break through it and use the hidden port.
Wano had only one official port. The others were simply used for transportation within the country.
Kanata, naturally, chose the latter – using the port.
Of course, they couldn't simply pass through the waterfall without permission. Normally, that is.
Kanata could easily shatter the waterfall with her Devil Fruit ability.
When she had visited before, the samurai under Shimotsuki Yasuie had been managing the port… but now, unfamiliar pirates were using it.
She had no intention of hiding. Kanata swiftly took control of the port after annihilating the Beasts Pirates stationed there, and secured a foothold in Wano.
"We'll use this as our base. There are enemies above the gondola as well. Let's go! Follow me!"
Mogura Port, hidden behind the waterfall, was vast, but not large enough to accommodate their entire fleet. They secured the port and unloaded supplies. A third of their ships returned to Hachinosu.
The gondola was massive, capable of transporting even giants.
Beasts Pirates lookouts were stationed on the surface, but they were instantly frozen solid. Kanata's subordinates, wary of approaching her, maintained a distance as they exited the building.
This was the first time they had operated on this scale, but it had been planned for. She summoned Scotch and gave him instructions.
"This is our foothold. Dilus will lead the first line of defense with the giants. The main force will form the second line of defense. Defend the building leading to the gondola at all costs."
"Aye. Where do we start our attack?"
"…Let's hear from the scouts first. Where are they?"
"They haven't arrived yet. They have Vivre Cards, so we know their location. We gave them an estimated arrival time, but we're a bit early."
"Then let's start setting up our defenses. Hurry."
The Beasts Pirates had the advantage of terrain in Wano. While they were likely just starting to receive information about their arrival, losing their foothold would be troublesome.
Giants, transported by the gondola, formed the core of their defense. Kanata created ice walls and watchtowers to prevent a surprise attack.
The scouts, dispatched a few days ago, returned, and they held an information-sharing meeting with the executives.
"So, what happened to Oden?"
"Kozuki Oden was defeated by Kaido and captured, along with his nine retainers. They were publicly executed by boiling in a caldron."
Zen and Izo seethed with anger at the scout's calm report.
Seeing their emotional turmoil helped Kanata stay calm. She gave them a look, urging them to calm down, and instructed the scout to continue.
"It seems Kozuki Oden was executed, but his nine retainers escaped. We know they fled to Kuri Castle, but their current whereabouts are unknown."
"…What happened to Oden's family?"
"Kozuki Toki's death has been confirmed. However, we haven't confirmed the deaths of Kozuki Momonosuke and Kozuki Hiyori."
If they were still alive, then they were hiding somewhere.
Izo and Zen looked at Kanata pleadingly, clinging to that slim possibility. Kanata pondered their request while tapping her temple with her finger.
They were in enemy territory.
Wano was under Kaido's control. They couldn't afford to split their forces.
Besides, if they were alive, they were likely in Kuri, where Oden had been the daimyo. To reach Kuri from Hakumai, they would have to pass through the Flower Capital.
Therefore…
"We'll take control of Wano first. Once we've defeated the current shogun and Kaido, we can search the entire country."
Based on information from the Marines, the Beasts Pirates' main force wasn't that large.
Kaido, the Governor-General, known as "Hundred Beasts Kaido".
King, the Lead Performer, known as "King the Conflagration".
Queen, the Lead Performer, known as "Queen the Plague".
And then there were the unidentified giant creatures. While it wasn't public knowledge, there were rumors they were failed experiments, "Ancient Giants" created in some research facility.
Including those who had been drawn to Kaido's strength, their forces numbered a little over 1,000.
In addition, there were the "Mimawarigumi", the shogun's samurai guards, and the "Oniwabanshu", the ninja forces, each numbering 5,000. If they were facing Oden, they might have hesitated to fight, but Kanata was a complete outsider. They would fight with everything they had.
"Any other reports?"
"…A few days ago, the daimyos of each region rebelled against the shogun. They were defeated by Kaido, but… considering the previous battle with Kozuki Oden, the Beasts Pirates must have suffered some casualties."
"Their casualties are based on speculation?"
"Yes. I apologize."
"It's fine. But don't base your reports on speculation. Overestimating or underestimating the enemy can cloud our judgment."
Preconceived notions could dull their thinking.
They had a significant advantage in numbers. If they assumed the enemy had suffered casualties, they could crush them head-on… but if their information about the Beasts Pirates was a bluff, their subordinates would suffer.
It was best to be cautious.
"Split the giant force in half. Send half of them to defend the port with half of the main force. The rest of the main force and the subordinate crews will come with me."
"Are we leaving executives behind for defense?"
"Gloriosa will stay behind, and I'll leave Kaie with her. Contact me if anything happens."
"Understood."
"Leave it to me. We'll protect this place, nyon."
Their target was the Flower Capital, the heart of Wano.
With an overwhelming force exceeding the combined might of the Beasts Pirates and Wano's forces, Kanata set out to conquer the nation.
***
The Flower Capital wasn't that far from Mogura Port in Hakumai.
The bridge connecting them was narrow, and it would have taken time for their army of over 20,000 to cross, but… it was a simple matter. Kanata created a bridge of ice and crossed the river.
Wano's ninja forces, the Oniwabanshu, attempted to scout them, but they were effortlessly killed within Kanata's Observation Haki range. Their information never reached the Flower Capital. She encountered Kaido a short distance from the capital.
Samurai, ninjas, and the Beasts Pirates – their combined forces were impressive.
However, perhaps due to the battle with Oden and the recent rebellion of the daimyos, their numbers were smaller than anticipated.
But even if they had been at full strength – the Twilight Pirates outnumbered them.
The giant force, consisting of 30 giants, led the vanguard, followed by 2,500 elite soldiers. The 22 subordinate crews brought the total number to over 20,000. They awaited Kanata's command to attack.
Kaido, having already transformed into his dragon form, was surprisingly calm.
"Wororororo… I didn't expect you to come here personally."
"Kozuki Oden is dead. I no longer have any reason to hold back."
"You were showing him consideration? That's hard to believe, considering you're that damned woman's daughter."
Kaido chuckled, then dismissed the thought. "Well, it doesn't matter." She was an enemy he would have to kill eventually. There was no other option now that she was here.
Kanata was known as the shogun's assassin in Wano. The samurai and ninjas were eager to fight her.
"Come on, let's kill each other. I'll kill you this time, Kanata!!!"
"Don't talk big, Kaido. I'll break your other horn and take your head – That's Oden's eulogy."
The horn she had broken before hadn't healed.
Whoosh!
Kanata charged towards Kaido, who roared in defiance.
"I'm a little angry right now. Don't disappoint me, Kaido – Dying too easily would be boring."
Kaido, caught off guard by her incredible speed, turned towards her – just in time to see her foot swinging towards his face.
Unable to dodge or defend, the kick landed squarely, sending his massive body flying.
