Chapter 27: The tournament continues
~POV Akira~
I rejoined my classmates. The match between Kirishima and Bakugo was ongoing. Kirishima seems to have the advantage, but of course, his stamina won't last. The previous match ended in my clone's victory. The reason? Dark Shadow is a good quirk with good strength and defense capabilities. But under sunlight, he is so damn slow, its brute strength is barely above Kirishima's. Even for a clone, it was easy. No disrespect; he is disadvantaged during the day in the open. The real problem is Tokoyami's own lack of fighting capability. He relies almost entirely on dark shadow, to the point where if you get past it, he will be powerless against almost everything.
The fight went on like this: Dark Shadow rushes at me (clone), I outspeed and get past it, knock out Tokoyami with a shop on the neck, end of the ordeal. The match even before Ida against Shiozaki was also fast, ended the same way as canon.
The current match is Bakugo against Kirishima.
"Diiiiiiie!!"
BOOOOOM
Rip Kirishima
"Kirishima-kun is unconscious! Bakugo-kun continues to the next round."
Once again, a round of applause echos through the stadium. I take my seat to watch the next match after a short pause. Midoriya vs. Ida.
"Now with his vicious carpet-bombing, Bakugo advances to the third round, and that completes the final four!"
A final round without Todoroki? What a twist.
"Akira-chan, how is Midoriya-chan? He was badly injured in his match." (Tsuyu)
Everyone is concerned about his well-being. Despite his awkwardness in social interaction, he still manages to bond with the others. Not like I am one to talk, since I'm not the most social person around.
"He is back to top form and as determined as ever, don't worry about it."
I saw Gravity Girl in the corner of my vision visibly calming down. I have never fallen in love myself, so I can't say much about her reaction.
"Ne Akira-kun, who do you think will win between Deku-kun and Ida-kun?" (Uraraka)
Uraraka appears uncomfortable about this fight. Of course, her two closest friends (she probably sees Midoriya more favorably) are up against one another. The rest of the class eyes me with curiosity, Bakugo is not here but in the waiting room. The dude is anxious after witnessing Todoroki's defeat and becomes impatient. Seeing Greenhead's progress nerves him. He doesn't even know about his latest power-up. Even I didn't see this one coming, frankly.
"100% Izuku wins this one."
Uraraka surprised by the unexpected response, harbors a broad smile that she herself doesn't even notice. The other's looked at me with skepticism.
"Aren't their strengths nearly equal? I would have given them a 50% chance each." (Yaoyorozu)
"Well, I wonder." (Akira)
Had it been before his power-up, then yes, 50/50 would be accurate. But not anymore, they still don't know about it, so I can't blame them. Izuku, however, is still inexperienced with 10-15%. He may be overwhelmed by the sudden increase in power and speed and will have a difficult time properly dodging and applying fighting techniques to his moves.
The two friends showed themselves and made their way to the arena.
"The first match of the semi-finals: from the hero branch, Ida Tenya Versus also from the heroic branch, Midoriya Izuku!"
Judging by the public's reaction, the fact that Endeavor's child was beaten raises expectations. It isn't every day that a pro-hero's kid is defeated by a seemingly nameless "Mob" for a lack of better terms. What these "plebeians" (I'm joking) don't know is that this plain boy is the chosen one. And unlike space Jesus, he is not going to turn against them even in his darkest time. Now that I think about it, what is it with chosen ones and absent fathers? The only thing I know about Midoriya's father is his name and quirk, nothing else. Even in Cannon, we have never seen the guy.
"Start!"
Izuku activates his full cowl, judging by the feeling he gives. I think he settled for 10%. Ida is the first to move. He is going straight toward his opponent. Bad idea, man. Izuku prepares his move and takes his usual basic boxing fighting stance. When Ida reached a gap of the meters between them, Izuku rushed at him in hopes of taking Ida off guard with his newfound strength.
Baaam
Crack
…
…
That was probably the most anticlimactic match in the Sport Festival's history.
The entire stadium went silent. While attempting to take Ida off guard, he was himself caught off guard by the increase in power. He couldn't stop himself once launched and accidentally headbutted Ida in the sternum, cracking it in the process. Midnight, and the commentators snapped out of their trance.
"Ida-kun is unconscious, Midoriya-kun advances to the final round."
Ida fainted from the pain, and Izuku looked confused. I looked around and saw that the rest of them looked at Izuku like goldfish. I can't blame them if one of your friends increases his raw power by almost 4 times in the span of 30 minutes. Four times because, although you triple the raw power from almost 5% to 15%, you need to consider the initial amount of force and kinetic energy you can produce without using the quirk. The stockpiled power is merely a power multiplier, so now that Izuku is physically stronger, his former 4% is way behind his presently 4%.
But I digress
"This is incredible! What happened to Midoriya since the last match?"
That's probably the question everyone present, civilians, and pro-heroes alike, wanted to ask. Todoroki is the first person to actually ask.
"Hey, Akira, you were the one who healed him. What happened to Midoriya for him to get stronger so suddenly?"
The others also turned to me, knowing that I was probably responsible for this. It is quite rare for him to be the first to say something.
"Ask him yourself, I already explained to him how and why this happened. The only thing I will say is that it is a one-time thing. Don't expect something like this to happen again to him or you all. It just so happens that extremely specific circumstances were at play here."
Todoroki probably wondered if such a thing would repeat. Either so that he can get stronger or from fear that he will be left in the dust.
"Well, I better get going."
I stood up from my seat and got ready to face the explosion boy.
~POV, third person~
"For the second semi-final. Two of the strongest first years. Our short-tempered explosion boy from the heroic branch, Katsuki Bakugo, versus the one who seems to be the strongest first year from the heroic branch, Uchiha Akira!" (Present Mic)
Akira and Katsuki faced each other in the arena, looking at one another dead in the eye. The look in their eyes, however, has two different meanings. Bakugo's is one of challenge, one that is determined to win and be first. While, Akira's look is one that is trying to pierce through his opponent's character.
"You better fight at full strength, Ninfreak I want to crush you at your strongest!" (Bakugo)
Akira isn't phased in the least by his opponent's tirade. He took a back stance with open palms (like in taekwondo)
"Then make me." (Akira)
Akira said with a still-evaluating look.
"Don't look down on me!" (Bakugo)
BOOM
Bakugo propels himself at great speed. He raised his right arm, intending to hit Akira with his right swing.
'That's a bad habit to always start with the same attack.' (Akira)
Bam
Gasp
Akira, seeing through Bakugo's pattern, mercilessly hit him in the solar plexus. Followed by a hit in the face and another on his right shoulder. Bakugo falls on the ground, gasping for air and trying to get up.
"Bakugo is already in a pinch. This is astounding, seeing one of the strongest first years beaten so easily. Hey Eraser, what is your red-headed student made of? Those three hits were so fast I barely saw anything!" (Present Mic)
"Honestly, I didn't teach him anything. The thing with this class rep is that we never had a good evaluation of his strength. His max power is an unknown, but if I had to guess, he never needed to fight at full power before. This already speaks volumes about his combat prowess. I bet that even fighting seriously is really rare for him."
Bakugo hearing the commentators' remarks makes him even more riled up.
"You bastard, don't underestimate me. If you don't give your all, you don't deserve to win."
Akira just looks at him with an unreadable expression and replies.
"As Aizawa-sensei mentioned, I never had to fight someone else at full power before. But that doesn't mean I don't use it when I train alone. But that reminds me. Now I'm curious about something, Bakugo. Why do you always want to win so badly? What are you trying to prove by doing so?"
'That is a genuine question. I don't understand why he wants to win so badly. Even in this hopeless situation, he still wishes to win. What does he want to prove? To me, winning just for the sake of it doesn't make sense. There is no point in winning just for the sake of it. Why does he want to absolutely be the strongest and the best? If my memory serves me right, in Cannon, as a pro hero, his ranking went from fourth to fifteenth just because of his attitude. And he wants to be number one?'
While such thoughts go through Akira's head. Bakugo didn't answer, glared at his opponent angrily. He brings his hands together using his explosions.
"Stun grenade!"
BOOOOM
'I see. He creates a smock screen, but it is futile. I can sense his presence. At least he is aware that he can't beat me in a frontal confrontation.' (Akira)
While smoke covers the arena, Bakugo grinds his teeth, prepares his next move. Even while feeling outclassed and standing before a seemingly impossible to defeat figure, he doesn't give up.
'This bastard, he is looking down on me. I will make him take me seriously!'
