Chapter 4: Frederick's face looked like a gift from nature
Mike turned away after showing them to their resting place.
Winters stood in the castle lounge as the maid added coals to the fireplace.
Heavy curtains blocked out the light from outside.
Winters suddenly remembered something and immediately carried her skirt toward the corner's rotating grand staircase.
Amelia yelled after her, "Sister, where are you going?"
Winters didn't pay any attention to her, if she remembered correctly, the guest that Duke Massa was meeting today was Frederick. Hastings, he was the Count of the Fox Clan.
The Fox Clan has the treasure that can remove the poison from Duke Massa.
Wait ...
Count Massa receives Frederick. Probably knowing that he was poisoned.
Winters' footsteps became slower the closer he got to the study.
There were sounds of arguing coming from the study, and Mike stood in the doorway and shook his head at her, signaling Winters not to go over.
"Frederick, I want results." Duke Massa's voice was weak with a cough.
"But I've searched the entire continent and there is no trace of the crystal."
"Frederick!"
Duke Massa sat on a chaise longue, his face pale as he surveyed the young fox man in front of him with sharp eyes.
Different hearths were placed in the study, yet Count Massa still felt cold and shivered.
Then, the sound of something heavy hitting the ground came from inside the study.
Winters outside could no longer hold back and rushed into the study despite Mike's obstruction.
"Uncle Massa!"
Frederick fell to the floor and looked at Winters, his eyes slightly mesmerized.
Frederick was only two years older than Winters.
"Ms. Winters, Duke Massa is fine, I've had quite a few injuries."
Only then did Winters turn her gaze to the young man on the ground.
Frederick had turquoise blue eyes, slightly curly blonde hair, and pale skin.
Foxes were supposed to be better looking than others.
Frederick's face looked like a gift from nature, like the face of a god.
Winters could guarantee it was the best looking man she had ever seen.
"Winters you're here." Duke Massa's tone became somewhat kind.
Winters withdrew her gaze from looking at Frederick and walked over to the recliner:
"Uncle Massa, Mike said you were sick, I was worried about your health and came to see you."
Massa glanced at Mike with more than a warning in his eyes.
Mike felt a bit wronged, but could only respond to this matter, he glanced at the little girl in front of him and sighed softly.
Winters really seemed to have grown up quite a bit.
"Winters, happy birthday! My body is fine, I just caught a bit of a cold from some wind."
Frederick got up from the ground and patted the dust on his body.
"Miss Winters, happy birthday!"
Duke Massa said with a sullen face after hearing Frederick's words:
"Frederick, there's no more business for you here, you go back first."
Winters wouldn't marry such an unreliable fox.
Mike was instructed, and he reached out and invited Frederick out.
Only Duke Massa and Winters were left in the study.
The stove fire made a nuisance sound.
"Uncle Massa, you don't have a cold, you're poisoned."
Duke Massa smiled and looked out through the glass, "It's just a cold."
"Uncle Massa, do you know who poisoned you."
"Winters, it's not good for people to be too smart sometimes, today is your birthday, your sister Amelia is still waiting for you, go."
Duke Massa didn't feel strange about how Winters knew about it, but didn't want her to interfere.
Winters hung her head and exited the study.
She hadn't gone more than a few steps when she heard Frederick's whistle.
Winters looked up at the fox boy who was waiting for her not far away, and once again the subtle, brilliant face gave her some sense of admiration.
"Ms. Winters, I'm Frederick."
"I know, you are the youngest Earl of the Fox Clan." Frederick thought that Winters was complimenting him on his youth and smiled shyly, reddening his face.
Winters was someone who had lived two lifetimes and could clearly detect that Frederick liked himself.
After being reborn, she could not have any interest in men except for revenge, but Duke Massa did not want her to investigate the poisoning, Winters could only ally with Frederick to join forces to investigate.
Mike saw the interaction between the two and spoke out to remind, "Ms. Winters, Frederick is not a good person."
Winters responded with a polite smile:
"Okay, Uncle Mike, he's just a friend celebrating my birthday."
She then walked over to Frederick and whispered:
"Frederick, would you be interested in taking a walk with me in the garden."
"My pleasure, Ms. Winters."
The gardens of Massa Castle were planted with all kinds of flowers, and trees.
The swing set in the garden was still handmade by Winters' mother back in the day.
Winters and Frederick walked side by side on the stone path.
"Is Ms. Winters trying to ask me about Duke Massa?"
Winters stopped walking and looked at Frederick and said, "Uncle Massa was poisoned and only the Fox Clan can cure the poison, that's why Uncle Massa received you."
"I'm afraid I've disappointed Ms. Winters, Duke Massa did not receive me for the poisoning."
"Then what was it about?"
"Secrecy."
Frederick smiled and sat on the swing, Winters sitting beside him.
"Is it about the crystal?"
Frederick's smile froze, obviously guessed by Winters.
"Don't worry I'm not interested in the crystal scepter at all, Uncle Massa is poisoned, can you save him?"
Frederick looked at Winters with a hint of probing in his eyes.
She actually knew about the Crystal Scepter!
Duke Massa's poison was self-inflicted, no one can stop a man who seeks death.
"I can't save him, and Ms. Winters shouldn't waste your efforts."
"Why? Frederick tell me clearly, why couldn't you save Duke Massa?"
Winters became a little more emotional, if Duke Massa's death could have been avoided, it meant that she would have been able to change everything afterward as well.
