Chapter 4 - The Imperial Princess, the Ghost, and the Wardrobe
[Polaris Academy’s First ‘Official Invitation’…. 30-Year Complete Neutrality Principle Breaking?]
(A poor-quality photograph is printed conspicuously large. The blurry picture shows Princess Evangeline holding her cherished sword, with a unit of archers aiming their arrows in the direction her sword is pointing.)
Polaris Academy has exceptionally officially ‘invited’ Evangeline Failondia, the second princess of the Failon Kingdom and holder of two of the kingdom’s Seven Swords, war hero of the Human-Demon War, as a special admission student.
There have been some concerns that this unprecedented, groundbreaking decision violates the principle of complete neutrality that has supported Polaris Academy for the past 30 years, but Polaris Academy refuted this as follows:
‘Evangeline Failondia is a knight who was active in the recent Human-Demon War and a hero who has engaged with and recorded victories or eliminations against more than four corps commanders of the Demon King’s Army. Polaris Academy clearly states that we are not inviting the second princess of the Failon Kingdom, but rather inviting the individual hero of the Human-Demon War, Evangeline Failondia.’
Regarding this claim from the Academy, some have argued that ‘while it is admirable that the princess of the Failon Kingdom fought to protect her people, that doesn’t mean she fought to protect all of humanity.’ However, the Academy has maintained an unusually firm stance, dismissing such arguments as ‘extremist and dangerous ideas that threaten the permanent peace of the continent and the peace treaty between the four countries.’
These arguments were mainly raised from the Empire and the Republic, and in response, the 11th President of the Republic, Urd Dillon, issued an official statement saying, ‘This is merely the claim of some extremists, and the Delmaria Republic is deeply grateful for the dedication of many heroes, including Princess Evangeline.’ Meanwhile, the Empire has maintained silence, so attention is focused on whether the Empire will take an official position similar to the Republic.
While there were many heroes who played active roles in the Human-Demon War besides Evangeline, she is the only hero under the age of 20—that is, eligible for admission to Polaris Academy—and some experts analyze that Polaris Academy is essentially inviting her as a representative of all war heroes who were active in the Human-Demon War….
“Evangeline, to Polaris…?”
The young man muttered, devouring the words with his nose practically pressed to the paper, as if ready to dive into the photograph printed on the front page of the newspaper.
A woman sitting on the sofa across from him, who had been quietly watching him, asked in a low voice with her eyes gently closed.
“What’s the matter, Oscar?”
“Si-Sister.”
The boy stammered. But it wasn’t out of fear or surprise at the woman’s tone or presence; if anything, it was closer to a tremor of joy.
“It seems Evangeline is coming to Polaris.”
“My goodness.”
The special admission of Evangeline Failondia, the second princess of the Kingdom, to Polaris.
As the first in line for the Empire’s succession, this was information she had already acquired long ago, but seeing her cute younger brother in such a good mood for once, Yuriana decided to play along.
“That’s wonderful, Oscar. You’re also entering Polaris this year, aren’t you?”
“That’s not quite right, as I haven’t even taken the exam yet.”
“What a funny thing to say. If you can’t pass, who else can?”
Yuriana waved her hand and shook her head.
Oscar, maintaining his expression with effort for the sake of decorum in front of watchful eyes, silently nodded.
However, the corners of his mouth that kept trying to rise regardless of propriety had long since escaped his control.
Watching him intently, Yuriana von Valentine smiled softly.
Oscar was such a pure child. Since their first meeting at age 11, he had been able to love so deeply a woman he had met only a handful of times over the course of six years.
Foolish people might proclaim it unbecoming of a member of the great Imperial family, but what does that matter when she herself would become Emperor anyway?
‘But, Oscar.’
Yuriana whispered quietly in her heart.
‘As much as you like her, will she love you just as much?’
She had already gathered some information about her through contacts planted in the Failon Kingdom.
Despite being engaged to Oscar, there was eerily little talk about her.
To conclude, Evangeline had absolutely, not even the slightest, interest in Oscar.
Whether dining with fellow members of the royal family, passing by and letting words slip, or when alone.
Complete indifference.
Even worse than showing open dislike.
Wasn’t this treating him as if he wasn’t even on the same level?
‘What does she think my little brother is?’
A vein bulged on Yuriana’s forehead with a ‘twitch.’
Just thinking about that woman’s face made her feel like hot anger was rising from her stomach.
Yuriana’s expression gradually began to contort like a demon.
‘If my little brother didn’t like you, I would have long ago…’
“Sister?”
“It’s nothing.”
At her brother’s voice, Yuriana instantly composed her expression.
‘When I was younger, I thought I wouldn’t let him marry at all and keep him with me forever.’
But that was just the immaturity of a young child who didn’t know reality yet, unlike now.
Now, she just wanted to confirm with her own eyes that he would find a wife as suitable as herself… no, at least half as suitable, and live happily.
Even in that sense.
‘…Evangeline Failondia.’
Indeed, whether you are worthy to be my brother’s companion.
‘I will confirm it with my own eyes…!’
“Hehehe, ohohohoho…!”
“……Sister??”
Looking at his sister who was making a scheming expression with a sinister laugh, Oscar von Valentine thought.
‘What on earth is she planning this time?’
‘Rest, Eva. Forget all about war and such things….’
“…Haah.”
-Thud.
After closing the novel without even inserting a bookmark, I rested my chin on the desk and sighed.
It had been six years since I reincarnated as Evangeline Failondia.
By this point, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I had completely assimilated into the character of Evangeline, and the Evangeline Failondia who had experienced four years of war had already become someone billions of light years away from both the possessor who had entered her body six years ago and the ‘original’ Evangeline before the possession.
If I had to compare it, it was something like a Po X Fusion.
The so-called All New All Different Evangeline.
But that didn’t mean I had forgotten my affection for my family.
Karl Failond was not exceptional but a fine king, and though he had two wives and six children, he was a good father who treated them all equally.
The two wives treated all six children as if they were their own, and Evangeline regarded both women as her mothers.
Considering the uniqueness of being a royal family, it was such an exemplary harmonious family relationship that Evangeline didn’t think to push it away even after recalling her past life memories.
And the fusion Evangeline, six years after recalling her past life memories, felt the same way.
“Haaaaaaaaaah.”
A long sigh escaped.
Anyone who could boldly say “no” to a father with such an expression saying such words would surely be an unparalleled unfilial child.
“…Polaris Academy.”
Though it wasn’t depicted at all in the original game, as Evangeline, a resident of this world, I had heard about what kind of place it was.
Failond Kingdom.
Valentine Empire.
Delmaria Republic.
Solaion Holy Nation.
The symbol of the peace treaty signed between the four countries with the most powerful forces in the central continent, and the best educational institution in the central continent, built in a completely neutral zone that no country on the continent could violate.
My father said.
He wanted me to go there, attend school like others my age, make friends, and live as ordinarily and happily as anyone else.
…Could I really adapt to the academy?
“You’re going to school?”
“What?”
An unfamiliar voice rang out.
When I turned my head sharply, there stood a corpse.
“…Jack?”
“School, sounds fun.”
“There’s no way it would be.”
I mumbled, trying to maintain my composure. Despite my efforts, my voice trembled.
“You’re dead, from two years ago. At the Battle of Parantia.”
Kikik. The corpse burst into laughter instead of answering.
“…Shit, what the hell are you? How did you get in here?”
-Drip, clack.
A curse finally escaped. The corpse seemed to have severely injured its jaw muscles and couldn’t close its mouth properly.
Something slimy dripped from between its gaping lips.
“So now, you’ll enjoy life?”
“I asked what you are.”
“After calmly driving thousands, tens of thousands of people to their deaths.”
Its jaw rattled and shook.
Even though its mouth clearly couldn’t close properly, the voice rang out all too clearly.
Or was it? It seemed more like a sound coming from inside my head rather than from somewhere else.
My head started to hurt. Though it wasn’t a loud sound, my head began to pound as if I were standing in the middle of an opera hall.
“How shameless.”
“Damn it!”
-Kwaaaang!!!!
I reflexively struck out with my prosthetic left hand.
The air pressure alone blasting from my fist shattered the inner wall, and the wardrobe that filled one side of the wall crumpled and overturned.
“…Huk, huk.”
There was no one there.
As if everything had been a lie from the beginning.
“Princess!!”
The door flung open with a bang.
“What on earth happened, kyaak!”
The maid who saw the half-destroyed inner wall and smashed wardrobes let out a shrill scream.
“What, what on earth is this…”
“…Wardrobe.”
To the maid who couldn’t continue speaking, I said in a dazed voice.
“I didn’t like the wardrobe design.”
“…What did you say?”
The maid responded with a bewildered expression.
She must have been dumbfounded.
The princess who hardly used even one of the more than ten wardrobes lined up must have seemed to be talking nonsense after taking some wrong medicine again.
Foolishly.
That was the only excuse I could think of.
