Chapter 9: (9) The Egg Natsu Found
Chapter 9: The Egg Natsu Found
The next morning at 10 AM, a well-rested Silver strolled into the guild, moving lazily. The guild was already lively.
Erza and Mira were in the middle of their usual rivalry, while Lisanna, Levy, and Cana were happily chatting together.
Elfman sat quietly nearby, listening to their conversation.
Meanwhile, Gray had, at some point, stripped down to just his underwear and was wandering around the guild.
Seeing Silver enter, Gray waved and greeted him, "Hey, I heard you've already become a C-rank mage? And your magic is great for finding things, right?"
"Who told you that?" Silver raised his hand to greet him, momentarily stunned by Gray's words.
"Everyone's saying it," Gray responded nonchalantly.
At that moment, Elfman, who overheard the conversation, turned and called out to Silver in his usual soft voice, "Hey, Silver!"
Given that Silver had spent the past six months frequently working with Elfman, he recognized his voice immediately. After saying goodbye to Gray, he walked over and asked, "What's up?"
"I told my sister about our mission yesterday, and this morning, she ended up telling everyone in the guild about your magic," Elfman said apologetically.
"It's fine," Silver replied without a hint of annoyance.
Seeing that Silver wasn't upset, Elfman sighed in relief and said, "I'm glad you're not mad."
"What's there to be mad about? It's not some big secret. Sooner or later, everyone would have found out anyway," Silver said with a smile.
Seeing Elfman so relieved, Silver found it hard to imagine him as the reckless fighter he'd become in the future.
While the two were chatting, Natsu suddenly burst into the guild from outside, holding an egg nearly as big as himself.
He loudly proclaimed to everyone around that it was a dragon egg.
He then ran straight to the guild's counter, eagerly asking Master Makarov, who was sitting there, "Gramps, please use your magic to hatch this dragon for me!"
However, Makarov, not knowing what kind of egg this was but wanting to teach Natsu about the sanctity of life, knocked Natsu on the head with his staff and said, "Idiot! Life is precious, and there is no magic that should desecrate it. If you want this egg to hatch, you have to figure it out yourself."
Natsu, unfazed by the hit, only cared about how to hatch the dragon, so he asked in confusion, "Then what should I do?"
At this point, Lisanna, drawn by the noise, came over with a pure smile on her face. "Raising an egg sounds like a lot of fun. Natsu, can I help too?"
"What? You want to help, Lisanna? That's great!" Natsu, entirely focused on hatching the dragon egg, was delighted and immediately agreed.
Then he scratched his head and asked, "But how can we make this egg hatch?"
"That's simple," Lisanna said with a snap of her fingers. A magic circle appeared in front of her as she activated her Take Over magic, transforming into a large bird.
Using her wings, she covered the egg and explained to Natsu, "You just need to keep it warm like this..."
Before Lisanna could finish, an impatient Natsu grabbed the egg from her and said, "Warming it up? That's what I'm best at! Watch this!"
As a Fire Dragon Slayer, Natsu breathed a stream of dragon fire directly onto the egg.
The scene startled everyone nearby.
Gray quickly kicked Natsu away and used his Ice-Make magic to cool the egg down. At that moment, Erza and Mira, having paused their competition, came over.
After learning what had happened, Erza immediately punched Natsu on the head and scolded, "Idiot! Using such high heat like that will cook the egg!"
Natsu clutched his head, looking aggrieved, and said, "How was I supposed to know? Lisanna told me that warming the egg would make the dragon hatch!"
"Lisanna said to use body warmth to keep the egg warm, not to roast it with fire," Elfman quickly jumped in to defend his sister before Mira could get angry, as he had been dragged along to the scene by Silver.
"That's right, we heard it clearly, Natsu," Erza chimed in. As someone who took things seriously, she wouldn't wrongly accuse anyone.
However, she knew it was simply Natsu's lack of common sense, so she added, "This is a good opportunity for you to learn about the preciousness of life."
Seeing everyone talking about Natsu, Lisanna quickly made a suggestion, "Natsu, there are too many people here. How about we go to the park and try to hatch the egg there?"
"Great, let's go right away!" Natsu, upon hearing the plan to hatch the egg, immediately forgot everything else. He grabbed the egg and hurried off with Lisanna.
Watching the two leave together, Silver couldn't help but smile.
He knew the egg didn't contain a dragon.
Before long, a silly cat that would bring endless joy to everyone—Happy—would be born.
With the main duo gone, the others went back to their activities.
At that moment, Mira spotted Silver and pulled him over. "Hey, Silver! I heard from Elfman yesterday that your magic is really good at finding things. Come with me on a mission later," she said.
Silver was taken aback and asked in confusion, "Don't you usually take combat missions? My magic isn't really suited for fighting. Why do you want me to come along?"
"What? Are you refusing?" Mira's eyebrows shot up. She leaned her face close to Silver's, glaring menacingly.
"It's not that," Silver quickly responded, carefully choosing his words.
He knew that the current Mira was nothing like her future self.
She was a delinquent girl with a rebellious streak.
Although she had a kind heart, her strong personality made her hate it when people disagreed with her.
"Oh, I see," Mira said, her expression softening a bit. Crossing her arms, she explained, "The mission I'm taking this time is to gather a kind of magical herb from the forest. This herb is tricky to find. Since your magic is great at locating things, we could use it to pinpoint where the herbs are, saving us the hassle of wandering around the forest aimlessly. It's much less of a headache that way."
