Chapter 9: Chapter 9 Supply Hunters

Chapter 9

January 17, 2025

The next day after breakfast, Sylas and the other patrol guards were called to gather in the empty field before heading out to their designated posts.

Major Kyle stood before them, his expression heavy.

"I assume you're all aware of the problem we're facing," he began, his voice serious. "Our safe zone continues to welcome survivors every day, but we are still lacking basic necessities and supplies. We're short on people to collect supplies, so I'm asking if any of you from the patrol team are willing to join a new task force. We need volunteers to venture out into the town, which is overrun with zombies, to gather supplies and rescue those still trapped there."

Major Kyle's gaze swept over the group of patrol guards which consists of both soldiers and civilians.

If they could stay safely inside the zone, who would willingly venture out? Many of the civilian patrol guards lowered their heads, avoiding Major Kyle's sharp gaze.

Several soldiers stepped forward, volunteering to join Major Kyle's team.

Sylas remained motionless for a moment, before finally stepping forward. He knew he couldn't hide in the safe zone forever. If he wanted to survive, he had to adapt to the harsh reality of the world and learn to fight the zombies.

Dylan stepped forward as well.

Among the civilians, only Sylas and Dylan volunteered to join Major Kyle's team.

"Good, good," Major Kyle said, nodding in approval. Then, turning to the rest of the patrol guards, he added, "The number of patrol guards has decreased, so your workload will increase. I request everyone to bear with it and also try to recruit more civilians for the patrol teams. You are dismissed."

"Yes, Sir," the patrol guards replied in unison before dispersing to their designated patrol areas.

Now, only a few soldiers, along with Dylan and Sylas, remained. Major Kyle stood before them, hands clasped behind his back.

"Everyone, before we head out, you need to understand the risks. It's dangerous out there, and you're putting your lives on the line. Be mentally prepared for what lies ahead," Major Kyle began in a steady and firm tone.

"This time, our mission is to collect medical supplies. Our destination is Hope Clinic on Maple Street. The safe zone is critically low on medicine, so we must retrieve whatever we can from the clinic. Take the next thirty minutes to prepare yourselves and regroup here," Major Kyle explained, detailing their objective before dismissing them.

After dispersing, Dylan and Sylas returned to their room. Dylan stretched his arms and picked up his backpack, turning to Sylas. "Are you not afraid?" he asked.

Sylas chuckled. "I should be asking you the same. You're not a soldier either, so why take the risk of joining the supply hunters team?" he countered, fiddling with a knife before securing it in the side of his boot.

"I'm willing to take the risk because I'm confident," Dylan replied, smirking. "I was once a member of the Special Task Force."

Sylas paused for a moment, after hearing what Dylan said. He hadn't expected him to have such an impressive background.

"Although I don't have a past as impressive as yours, I am a trained fighter. And both of us know that the days of leisure and comfort are over. If we don't go out and get used to it, how are we going to survive? How long can we depend on the soldiers and others? Only by taking risks and putting our lives on the line can we hope to survive in this apocalypse," Sylas replied.

"That's true," Dylan said, nodding. "In this apocalypse, if we want to survive, we have to learn to fight and scavenge for ourselves."

Sylas knew that the safe zone wouldn't last forever. The army's ability to protect them would eventually falter. That's why he had chosen to join Major Kyle's supply hunters team to gain experience and prepare himself for the future.

Half an hour later, everyone assembled in the yard and Major Kyle soon arrived in his military jeep.

"We'll be taking four military cars and one truck this time," Major Kyle announced. "Everyone, get in. Let's move out, we'll try to be back before dark," he added before driving his jeep toward the gate.

The team quickly climbed into the military vehicles and followed behind Major Kyle's jeep.

At the gate, the soldiers on duty immediately open the huge metal gate, allowing the convoy to pass through.

The vehicles rolled out of the safe zone and headed toward Maple Street, where the nearest clinic was located. Along the way, a few wandering zombies appeared on the road. The soldiers promptly shot them down from within the moving cars, clearing the path as they advanced.

"We're about to enter the Red Zone. Everyone, stay alert!" Major Kyle shouted as he reached a fork in the road and turned right.

"Red Zone ahead. Stay sharp, especially you new guys," one of the soldiers near Sylas repeated, gripping his gun tightly as he scanned the area outside. "The Red Zone has the highest concentration of zombies."

Sylas nodded as his eyes vigilantly swept over the surroundings. His fingers hovered near the trigger, ready to fire. The scene outside was grim, buildings were in ruins, shops looted, their windows and doors shattered. Corpses littered the streets, and vehicles were scattered haphazardly, with some overturned or wrecked beyond recognition.

Bang!

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The sharp sound of gunfire erupted from Major Kyle's jeep ahead.

The soldiers sitting in Major Kyle's military jeep constantly shot down the zombies. There were zombies roaming aimlessly on the roads and alleys, some rushing toward the cars. The cars overran several zombies as they kept shooting down the ones on the road.

"Nice marksmanship, brother," one of the soldiers praised Dylan as he shot a zombie. He didn't expect a civilian to have such remarkable skill.

"Thanks, you too," Dylan replied with a smirk as he fired a bullet that hit a lady zombie in the center of her forehead.

Although Sylas had also trained in firearms and had decent marksmanship skills, he was nowhere near Dylan, who was a retired Special Task Force member.

Along the way, they continued clearing zombies on the roads. But after a while, the military jeep ahead abruptly halted.

"The road is blocked. Everyone, immediately clear the zombies nearby. We have an overturned car blocking the way," Major Kyle said as he also picked up his gun to face the zombies.
