Chapter 6: Chapter 6 Entering the safe zone

There were seven zombies chasing after

the man, and Sylas immediately maneuvered his metal rod and sprung into action. He hit the heads of zombies with precision and took them down one

by one as he dodged the other zombies gathering around him.

Dylan joined in, severing the heads of the

zombies with his long, sharp sword.

Bang!

Out of nowhere, Serena appeared, swinging her baseball bat, and with a 'Bang', she smashed the head of a zombie that was about to bite the man holding the boy.

"Woo... impressive!" Dylan shouted at

Serena as he flicked the blood off his

sword.

"Thank you! Thank you for saving us!" The

man kneeled down, holding the boy in his arms as he repeatedly expressed his

gratitude.

"It's okay, get up," Dylan said as he helped the man to his feet.

"What happened to your leg?" Sylas asked as he looked at man's blood-soaked pants.

The man hesitated for a moment before replying, "I got injured accidentally while jumping off a fence."

"Alright," Dylan said, glancing around. "We've already wasted enough time. Let's head to the safe zone. Brother, will you be able to drive? There's an empty car over there if you need it."

"It's no problem. I can drive," the man replied, nodding quickly. He thanked them again before rushing toward the car with the boy still in his arms.

It was already evening by the time they reached the safe zone.

The new Pinewood High School building had been transformed into a fortress by the army.

Sylas slowed his car as he took in the sight. A newly built five-meter-high wall surrounded the school, with a massive, heavy metal gate standing firmly at the entrance. The school grounds had been expanded significantly, likely to accommodate the survivors. Armed soldiers patrolled the perimeter and the gate.

A booth had been set up near the gate where soldiers and a few doctors in white coats were inspecting the people entering the base.

'It seems the army was busy constructing these walls and expanding the area over the past few days. For them to accomplish so much in such a short time is truly impressive,' Sylas thought.

As Sylas looked ahead, he saw the man he had saved earlier rushing toward the army. The man handed them the young boy, said something to them, and then hurriedly got into a car and drove away. Sylas was confused by the man's actions but didn't think further.

Sylas patiently waited for his turn. After half an hour, as he slowly approached the gate, he noticed a woman being inspected by the army just moments ago being shot down. Her family members immediately began shouting and blaming the soldiers.

"This is murder!"

"What are you doing? Killing people as you please?"

"You must give us an explanation!"

The soldier who had shot the woman turned to face her family. Without saying a word, he raised the pistol in his hand and aimed it at them. Seeing the weapon pointed in their direction, they immediately quieted down.

"She was infected and would have turned into a zombie sooner or later. If I let her into the base, everyone inside would be at risk. If you still want to cause trouble here, you're free to leave. There are many people behind you. Don't waste my time," the soldier said bluntly.

Hearing his words, the family dared not say another word. They entered the gate under the guidance of another soldier.

A few soldiers promptly arrived and carried the woman's body away.

Sylas parked his car and, carrying his backpack, got out and joined the line. Ahead of him, Dylan and Serena passed through the gate after being inspected. Dylan turned to look at Sylas and gave him a nod.

Sylas nodded back in acknowledgment.

Soon, it was Sylas's turn. A nurse took his hand, drew a few drops of blood, and handed the sample to a doctor. The doctor mixed the blood with some kind of solution. Sylas understood it was to check if he had been infected with the zombie virus.

"Pass," the doctor said.

Sylas entered through the gate and was led to a large hall by a soldier. Inside, he saw many people, including Dylan and Serena

Dylan waved at Sylas, who immediately made his way toward him.

"Come, sit here," Dylan said.

"Brother, what's going on? Are they planning to let us stay here?" Sylas asked, sweeping his gaze over the hall packed with people.

Dylan patted his shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry, it's only for tonight. Even though they've already inspected us, they want to take extra precautions. We just have to endure it for now."

Sylas nodded in understanding.

Several soldiers armed with guns stood guard inside the hall and by the doors, their eyes sharp and vigilant as they scanned the crowd.

"They'll shoot immediately if they notice anything unusual," Dylan said, noticing Sylas's attention on the soldiers..

Sylas leaned against the wall, wanting to close his eyes and rest, but the noise and various smells assaulted his nose, making him frown. Then he turned to look at Serena, who had her eyes closed. She seemed unbothered by the noise and smell.

"Let's try to get some sleep," Dylan said as he leaned against the wall and wrapped his head and nose with a muffler.

Sylas pulled up the black high-neck sweater he was wearing inside his jacket to cover his nose and tried to sleep. Occasionally, he could hear the sounds of gunshots outside.

It was winter, and the night was cold. Not many people slept well due to the lack of heaters and bedding. But no one dared to complain, being alive itself was a luxury.

January 15, 2025

The next morning, the soldiers distributed a piece of bread and a bottle of water to each person.

After that, everyone was gathered outside on the ground. The man who had shot the woman the day before stood before them and said, "There are many survivors, and we do not have enough manpower. So we are recruiting people to help. If you join the patrol team, the army will provide you with better accommodations and food. You can also join rescue operations, supply gathering, and more. Women who can cook or handle other chores will also be rewarded with better food and accommodations. For the rest, only basic food and shared rooms will be provided. Since this safe zone is newly established, we'll adapt as we move forward. That's it—the choice is yours."

The man stepped into a military jeep parked beside him and left the base as soon as he finished speaking.

"Those who want to join the patrol team, step forward and register first," one of the soldiers shouted. However, no one moved. It was clear that everyone was afraid and unwilling to take risks.

Sylas, however, didn't want to spend another night in a shared room packed with people. Since the army promised better food and accommodations for those who joined the patrol team or other missions, he didn't hesitate to step forward and register.

Seeing Sylas step forward, the soldier smiled and said, "You've got courage, brother."

"Count me in too," Dylan said as he came forward, hooking his arm around Sylas.

"Me too," Serena said, walking toward them with her baseball bat resting on her shoulder.

The soldier responsible for registering paused for a moment, stunned.

"What? Are girls not allowed?" Serena asked, narrowing her eyes.

"Of course not. Anyone can join," the soldier said with a laugh.

"Hmm… you'd better provide good accommodations," Serena said, patting her baseball bat.

After them, only a few others stepped forward to register. Those who signed up for work were led to their new accommodations by one of the soldiers.

"Five people will share each room. I know it's still crowded, but we can't afford to provide single rooms for everyone in this situation. However, the food and other privileges you'll receive will be far better than what others get. As for this young lady, you can share a room with the female nurses in the building opposite this one," the soldier said.

Sylas didn't mind. He understood the circumstances. A single room for each person was out of the question. As long as he wasn't crammed into a room with hundreds of people, he was fine with it. Besides, they were provided with military bedding.

"Alright, rest today. Work begins tomorrow," the soldier said before leaving.

"I'm going to get a good sleep," Serena said and left.

After she was gone, Sylas and Dylan went into their assigned room along with three others to rest. No one had slept well the previous night, and now that they had registered to become patrol guards, they needed proper rest.

At noon, a soldier arrived and woke them up, notifying them of lunch.

When they arrived at the dining hall, Sylas and Dylan noticed that only soldiers were present. Seeing their confusion, one of the soldiers explained, "The food here is only for the army and those who registered for work. We can't provide the same type of food to everyone."

Sylas and Dylan looked at the meal, which included meat, vegetables, eggs, and rice, and quickly understood. The soldiers worked hard and risked their lives to provide food and shelter for the survivors, so it was essential for them to eat healthy and stay fit.
