Chapter 4: Chapter 4 Safe Zone

Chapter 4

Sylas heaved a sigh of relief as he listened to the announcement from the National Emergency Response Team on the radio.

"At least the government hasn't abandoned the people," Sylas thought.

14 January 2025

Four days had passed, and Sylas had been confined to his house the entire time. During these days, he had been constantly on edge. From his window, he had witnessed the chaos wrought by the undead in the streets. Even now, he could see some of them wandering aimlessly, while others scratched and pounded on the tightly closed gates of nearby houses. A few of them were even gathered around his own gate.

The police and armed forces were constantly patrolling the streets, shooting down the undead, but the creatures kept multiplying. Those bitten by the undead would turn into one within a day—though Sylas didn't know the exact time frame.

It had been a week, and Sylas had already run out of food. After finishing his meager breakfast, he stared at the last piece of bread and the lone carton of milk with a heavy heart.

He had to venture out today to find food, or he would starve. He had known this day would come sooner or later, and he had prepared himself to face it.

Over the past few days, Sylas had been listening to the radio, learning that the world had already descended into chaos.

There was still no news about the Pinewood Town safe zone being established. The earlier announcement had stated that armed forces would set up safe zones in remote, small towns.

Bang, Bang, Bang!

The sound of gunfire echoed through the streets, and Sylas watched as police and armed forces shot down the undead from their patrol cars.

"Attention, survivors of Pinewood Town.

"Attention, survivors of Pinewood Town."

"The army has established a safe zone on the west side of town. It is located at the new Pinewood High School building. Survivors can head to the safe zone. We will also assist survivors in reaching it. The rescue operation team is already in action."

The announcement repeated several times as the patrol car drove past.

"Finally, the safe zone has established. But... west side? That's quite far," Sylas muttered to himself.

"I have to go there today," Sylas thought, quickly packing the last piece of bread and the carton of milk into his backpack. He added a few clothes and the remaining bottles of water. The water supply had been cut off the day before yesterday, and Sylas had been rationing the bottled water he had brought when he first arrived.

Water and food were the most essential items for survival, and Sylas had now run out of both.

Carrying his backpack and gripping a metal rod tightly in his hand, Sylas steeled himself. After taking one final look at his house, he locked the door. The army had just cleared the undead, making it the best time to head out.

Sylas opened the gate and started his car. After carefully driving the car out, he stepped out again to close the gate behind

him.

Just then, he heard a rustling sound. His body went stiff for a moment before he

instinctively turned his head to the left.

An undead was standing up from among the few corpses. It's lifeless eyes locking onto him as it staggered. It seems the army and police missed it.

"What the f...k?" Sylas cursed under his

breath.

Before the creature could lunge at him,

Sylas sprang into action. Gripping the metal rod tightly, he swung it with all his strength, smashing it into the undead's head. With a sickening thud, the undead

collapsed to the ground.

Before Sylas could catch his breath, he

noticed three undead rushing toward him as if seeing a fresh food from the right side of the road.

Sylas had no time to think where they

had come from. Tightening his grip on the metal rod, Sylas swung hard at the closest one, smashing its head and sending it crumpling to the ground. At the same time, he kicked the other two away. Before the two could get back on their feet, Sylas deftly maneuvered the rod and struck them both in quick succession, bringing

them down.

Breathing heavily, Sylas bent over, resting his hands on his knees.

"Didn't the army just clear the roads? Where did they come from?" Sylas thought, his eyes scanning his surroundings and on the turning to his right, where the three undead had appeared.

The road reeked of decayed corpses and the stench was overwhelming him slowly. Sylas quickly stood up and locked the gate before getting into his car and sped off, bypassing the corpses. As he drove, he noticed several cars emerging from neighboring houses, joining the road. More and more vehicles filled the street. He also saw a few wandering undead roaming aimlessly nearby.

After half an hour of driving, Sylas saw several cars stopped ahead, forming a line.

"What's going on?" he thought. An uneasy feeling gnawed at him.

"We have to reach the safe zone today! What's going on? Move already!"

"Who's blocking the road?"

"Hey! Are you going to make us starve here? If you're not heading to the safe zone, get out of the way!"

Drivers and passengers leaned out of their car windows, yelling in frustration, but no one dared to step out of car fearing that an undead would suddenly appear and attack them

Sylas glanced in his rearview mirror and saw a long line of cars stretching behind him.

Seeing no movement from the car ahead, a few daring men angrily stepped out of their vehicles and marched ahead to check out the situation.

Sylas also got out of his car as well and moved a little forward to see what was happening.

Ahead, two cars were blocking the road. One of them was slightly askew, its hood dented, evidence of a collision.

Suddenly, a piercing scream rang out.

"Ahh!"

One of the men who had approached the cars stumbled backward, there was terror on his face. The others who had followed him also began retreating in panic, some even falling to the ground in their haste.

"What's going on?"

"What happened?"

The people inside the cars nervously asked.

"Zombies! Th-there... inside the car!" the man who screamed stuttered, his voice trembling.

"Dead... dead! The driver in the other car is dead!" another man added, his face pale.

There was a clamor on the road. Panic erupted and many people were frightened, and the cars behind keep increasing.
