Chapter 14 - Chicken and Beer with the Dwarf Lady (1)
“Bring out the food and alcohol. If I eat them and there’s no problem, I’ll give you the permit mark.”
Miley’s final declaration to serve alcohol and food somehow seemed.
“Like you’re abusing your power.”
“Abusing power? What’s that?”
“Ah, it’s nothing.”
At first glance, it might sound like an arrogant and power-abusing tone, but it’s actually not a big deal.
‘It’s just like Fiona-ssi, simply wanting to verify if it’s really okay to give the permit.’
Literally, she just wants to eat the food and drink the alcohol to check if it’s okay to sell.
The dwarven race often gets misunderstood because of their way of speaking.
“You bland fellow, so are the food and alcohol ready? If you’re not prepared now, I’ll come back later.”
“No, I can serve you right away.”
If we postpone it, who knows when we’ll get scheduled again, and we’d have to stay closed in the meantime, which we can’t do.
Since everything’s prepared, I can serve it right away.
After guiding Miley to her seat, Jin asked.
“So, what kind of alcohol should I serve you?”
“What kind of alcohol are you planning to sell here?”
“Well, if I had to say, everything?”
“Everything? Are you serious?”
“Of course I’m serious.”
Anyway, ingredients can be purchased through the furniture, and alcohol is included in that.
If I can bring in various kinds of alcohol from all over the modern world, why limit myself to selling just a few types?
Plus, each type of alcohol has different brands and tastes.
It might be fun to see which brand and taste are popular in this world.
But this plan of Jin’s seemed to come across as vain overconfidence to Miley.
“Huh, I thought the name Omnipurpose Restaurant was already overflowing with confidence. It’s good to have confidence, but it’s not good to take on more than you can handle.”
“What do you mean, more than I can handle?”
“Well, do you really think what you said is possible?”
Miley sighed slightly, feeling frustrated.
‘Sometimes there are guys like this.’
Guys who don’t know much but prepare everything, saying they’ll respond to all customer requests.
“Listen well. To run a proper store, you need to give up the greed of preparing all types of alcohol.”
From Miley’s perspective, this was natural advice.
There were reasons why the types of alcohol that restaurants in this world could handle were limited.
“It’s natural because the space to store alcohol, the means to store it, and the storage period are all limited.”
“The alcohol you’ve stocked might not be popular and might not sell.”
“Then what? That alcohol will deteriorate and lose its taste, or go bad and have to be thrown away, causing losses for the store.”
“If you prepare many types all at once, this happens simultaneously, actively increasing losses.”
Miley was passionately explaining, as if determined to make this overly confident novice owner understand clearly.
Why would Miley bother doing office work to create an alcohol map in the first place?
Isn’t it because normal stores have limited types of alcohol they handle and different tastes, so she records them for each store?
As someone who loves alcohol that much, Miley was emphasizing the need for selection and focus even more.
‘I can’t let a newly discovered alcohol shop go out of business.’
It’s also to advise these guys who sometimes appear.
That’s how new alcohol shops can survive.
“Do you understand? How reckless your actions are?”
Usually, when Miley explains to this extent, most owners agree and say they’ll change.
It’s not wrong, and it’s the opinion of a dwarf who can be considered an expert on alcohol.
Some people also worry about not getting the permit if they upset the inspector.
But occasionally, there are people who still don’t listen and stubbornly insist.
“I appreciate your concern, but I’m really fine, I tell you?”
“You stubborn fool…!”
Jin was one such case.
However, the difference was.
Jin wasn’t being stubborn out of disregard for Miley’s words.
‘Miley’s words aren’t wrong, actually.’
Rather, he thought Miley’s words were very correct.
It’s common sense not to take on more than you can handle, and the reasoning based on experience is solid.
The fact that she’s giving such passionate advice to someone she’s just met also means that Miley is quite kind, contrary to her appearance.
It’s just that her way of speaking ruins it all.
Anyway, for a typical dungeon city restaurant, Miley’s advice would have been golden words to live by.
It was that appropriate of a point.
‘At least by this world’s standards.’
The factor Miley didn’t consider was that Jin and this Omnipurpose Restaurant weren’t typical restaurants.
Its true identity was a restaurant run by a transmigrator, no less.
While Jin thought Miley’s advice was absolutely correct in every detail.
“Our restaurant can handle it sufficiently.”
Separately from that, he had no intention of giving up on something he could do.
“Ha, then show me. The reason you can be so confident. If it’s just pride without proper grounds, I can’t give you the permit.”
Seemingly annoyed at Jin’s unyielding stubbornness, Miley gruffly threatened to see what he could do.
‘Is she upset?’
Or maybe she’s a bit miffed because he didn’t listen to her.
Anyway, in the end, the conclusion came back to the initial question.
“Then what kind of alcohol should I serve you?”
“Hmm… Give me beer.”
After pondering for a moment, Miley ordered beer.
“Do you like beer the most?”
“Well, being a dwarf, liking beer the most is part of it. But beer is the best-selling alcohol in this dungeon city.”
What else would adventurers drink the most if not beer?
It’s cheap and comes in large quantities, so of course.
“If the best-selling beer is decent, then it’ll work out somehow. Conversely, if even the beer is subpar… you know?”
“I understand. So what kind of beer should I serve you?”
“Ha! Of course, you should bring all of them. You were so confident, so that shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
To Miley, who was sending a look that said to back down now if he was scared, Jin boldly replied.
“I don’t mind, but can you handle it? It’ll be quite a lot?”
“Are you underestimating a dwarf? I don’t get drunk easily, so don’t worry.
If you’re worried about the cost, the guild will cover it, so don’t worry about that either.”
“That’s not what I’m worried about, but alright. Then, shall I bring them all out?”
“Hmph, how many could there be.”
Miley thought Jin was just putting on strange airs, but.
Soon, she had to stop Jin in shock.
“Wait, stop stop! What’s all this?!”
“What do you mean? These are the beers I mentioned?”
“Are these all beer?”
Miley pointed blankly at the dozens of bottles on the table.
The smooth bottles of various colors didn’t have the transparent beauty of see-through containers, but.
Each one was cleanly designed and solidly finished as if crafted by an artisan.
‘Using such bottles just to hold beer?’
Wouldn’t the bottle price be higher than the beer?
The tail is wagging the dog.
Shocked both as a drinker and as a dwarf, Miley picked up a bottle as if entranced, and was surprised once again.
“It’s cold!”
“Pardon?”
“The beer is fucking cold like ice!”
“Well, of course it’s cold, it’s beer?”
“No, that’s not what I mean! Why is the beer cold?!”
“???”
Seeing Jin tilt his head as if he didn’t understand what she was saying, Miley pounded her chest in frustration.
Jiggle jiggle
Of course, Miley’s voluptuous chest responded by shaking violently instead of making a loud sound, but it was evidence of how flustered Miley was.
“Is it normal for beer to be this cold in the middle of summer?”
Cold beer is originally a delicacy that can only be enjoyed in winter.
In the current midsummer, even lukewarm beer would be a blessing in reality.
In cheap places, they might even serve warm beer as is, so that says it all.
But the beer Jin brought out was all as cold as winter beer.
“And all dozens of bottles you brought out. What exactly did you do?”
“Ah, so that’s what you meant. It’s simple. I maintained the coolness with a magical tool.”
Anyway, it was true that it was cooled by a magical tool since it was taken out of the refrigerator (pretending to be a portable trading post).
“A magical tool just to keep beer cool? On top of putting it in bottles like these?”
“Yes.”
“Wow…”
Miley was amazed.
And she admitted. That she had been nothing special all this time.
‘This guy is really crazy about alcohol.’
Even she, who prided herself on loving alcohol, didn’t have the confidence to invest this much in mere beer.
This was truly beyond efficiency, entering the realm of madness.
It was like using an orichalcum chisel to make a wooden sword.
It would certainly be good if you did it, but is there really a need to go that far? It’s not even expensive wine?
Common sense would never allow it.
“So that’s why you were so stubborn.”
Well, of course someone acting so unconventionally wouldn’t listen to common sense statements.
When asked how he would preserve it, he answered that he would use bottles and magical tools.
If you were going to do this, you should have said so earlier instead of making me angry for no reason!
“Are you sure you didn’t come to the wrong street?”
“You keep saying that.”
“Well, if you’re going to sell beer that you’ve put this much effort into, you should be in the noble district over there!
Do you think people coming to this street can afford such expensive beer?!”
“Expensive? I don’t intend to sell it expensively though?”
“What? Wait, what does that mean now. Weren’t you aiming for a high-end restaurant?”
“No? I’m aiming for a restaurant where anyone can come as long as it’s above a certain level.”
Otherwise, Kyle couldn’t come and it would be hard to build connections, wouldn’t it?
“….If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be more profitable to just take this beer and sell it to merchants instead of running a restaurant?”
“Well, for various reasons, I can’t sell it separately other than serving it here.”
Since it was adding ingredients that weren’t originally in the game, it was patched to prevent selling items separately or doing business to avoid confusion within the game.
In fact, it’s a natural patch if you think about it.
We should be grateful that they don’t block eating or cooking and allow that much.
‘In the first place, money isn’t the ultimate goal, so I don’t intend to do separate business anyway.’
I just need to earn enough to avoid losses while running the restaurant.
Cold beer? Of course, I was planning to use it as a loss leader.
Seeing Miley’s reaction, it seemed like this would play its role well too.
Of course, I couldn’t say such things straightforwardly, so I wondered if Miley would understand, but.
“Yeah, what’s the point in talking to a madman.”
“Pardon?”
“No, it’s nothing. If that’s what you like, it’s fine.”
For some reason, she nodded and understood on her own.
“Anyway, I get it. I apologize for underestimating you. You’ve proven that you can sell various types sufficiently, so put these away for now. The precious alcohol will all get lukewarm.”
“So does this mean I pass?”
“Not yet. We haven’t tasted it yet, have we?”
“That’s true.”
At Miley’s point, Jin put away the bottled beers he had set out, leaving only a few bottles for Miley to check.
“Alright, the alcohol is done, what about the food?”
“Is there any food you’d like?”
“Well. I’m not particularly picky about side dishes as long as the alcohol is good. Please provide a side dish that goes well with beer.”
“A side dish that goes well with beer…”
If that’s the case, there was one food that immediately came to mind.
A perfect match boasting fantastic compatibility with beer.
The beer snack most loved by Koreans.
“How about a food called chicken?”
It was the moment chimaek (chicken and beer) was about to land in another world.
