The Martial God with Psychic Powers

chapter 31

He couldn’t understand it.
Those monsters stepped forward… just because of the librarian’s grandson?
Why?

“Let me tell you who it is that the Martial God Sect Leader has his eye on.”
He said that person.
That wasn’t a title you’d use for the grandson of a mere librarian.

And especially not when it was coming from the likes of the Celestial Lightning Swordmaster, the Lord of Hell’s Shadow Hall, and the Black Death God.
“The one the Sect Leader is targeting… is the grandson of the Martial God Sect Leader.”
“…What?”

For a moment, he thought he’d misheard. He unconsciously rubbed his ear.
“W-what did you just say…?”
“I said the person you thought was the librarian’s grandson is in fact the grandson of the Martial God Sect Leader.”

“Kh…!”
A truth he never could’ve imagined.
This wasn’t just a case of a family stronger than the Seungyang Sect.

They had nearly wiped out his entire clan like dust.
Thud—
Before he realized it, his legs had gone weak, and he collapsed to the ground.

Now he finally understood why these three were here.
It wasn’t some coincidence.
They were here to protect someone. And that someone… was the very person he had tried to attack.
He had been caught trying to harm the grandson of the Martial God Sect Leader.

What was he supposed to do now?
Gok Tae-gi stared blankly at the three men.
Then, suddenly, he threw himself to the ground in a full bow and pleaded.

“I-it was my fault! End it with me! I beg of you—please!”
Cheon Ho-seong helped him up and said gently,
“We’re not here to kill you. We’re here to inform you.”

“…Pardon?”
“You need to know the Young Lord’s true identity, so you can prevent… unforeseen incidents in the future.”
“…Unforeseen incidents?”

“I’m talking about provoking the Young Lord again, like you did just now.”
“Gah! N-no! That’ll never happen again!”
“And one more thing. The reason we’re telling you this is also to warn you. The Young Lord wishes to keep his identity hidden. The Martial God Sect Leader wishes the same. So unless either of them reveals it themselves, you must never speak of it.”

“Y-yes, of course! I’ll take this secret to my grave! J-just please… spare my life…”
“Don’t worry. We won’t kill you. The Young Lord has ordered us to let you live. The only reason you’re still breathing is because of him. You should always be grateful to him.”
“H-he… he knew I was going to attack him…?”

“That person is not someone we mere mortals can measure. Even telling you the truth about him now is only possible because he allowed it.”
The greatest prodigies of the Martial God Sect were calling themselves mere mortals.
Gok Tae-gi swallowed hard.

Just how incredible was this person, for them to speak like that?
Looking at their expressions, it was clear this wasn’t just about him being the Sect Leader’s grandson.
They were truly loyal.

That’s the look of someone loyal to their master… Just how powerful is the hidden heir of the Martial God Sect, for monsters like these to follow him so sincerely?
When the Martial God Sect Leader said he would choose a successor, Gok Tae-gi thought the reign was finally coming to an end.
But he was wrong.

An incredible existence had been hidden away all this time.
Suddenly, he thought of his son.
Why had he been summoned today?

He was starting to worry.
“May I ask… why that person took my son?”
To his question, Cheon Ho-seong smiled.

“Your son will become a new man under the Young Lord’s guidance. So don’t worry. Go home.”
“A-a new man…? Does that mean the Young Lord accepted him?”
“How could I possibly know the Young Lord’s will? But it’s not a bad thing, so you don’t need to worry.”

“He’s right. The Young Lord is so strong that even the three of us combined couldn’t beat him. Your son has been given a great opportunity.”
My god.
Even the three of them together couldn’t win?

It sounded insane, but he had to believe it.
Even if only half of that was true, that meant the Young Lord was vastly more powerful than him.
Now he understood why the kids had been so completely frozen.

“I… I understand. Then, I’ll take my leave now.”
“Remember: you must not speak of this. Ever.”
“Y-yes, of course! I’ll remember! I swear I will!”

“Go on, then.”
“Th-then I shall be off…”
With legs still trembling, Gok Tae-gi barely managed to compose himself and hurried out of there.

Once he disappeared, the expressions on the three men turned grim.
“I don’t like it. Letting someone who tried to attack the Young Lord walk away unharmed?”
“What can we do? The Young Lord told us to handle it gently.”

“Our Young Lord is too soft-hearted. He didn’t even use Terror Imprint this time.”
“Maybe it’s because he trusts us? If he speaks, and someone leaks it… they’ll have to deal with us. Who would be bold enough to open their mouth?”
“Well, yeah. True.”

“If you’re afraid to die, you’ll do anything.”
“Honestly, I kind of wish that guy would slip up and reveal the Young Lord’s identity. That way, the world would finally know how great he is.”
“…That doesn’t sound so bad.”

“Enough with the nonsense. Let’s get moving. We’ve been away too long. We should return to the Young Lord’s side.”
“Yeah. Let’s go.”

****
“Get it right!”
Seon Woo Baek’s voice rang out.

“Your stance is off!”
Jang Un’s voice followed.
“Huff, huff…!”

“Uuurgh!”
Groans echoed from every direction.
“We-we were wrong!”

“Please forgive us!”
The kids were desperately begging Jang Un and Yeon Woo Jin for forgiveness.
To that, Jang Un gave a smirk and said,

“What are you talking about? I already told you—this isn’t punishment.”
To the kids, it absolutely felt like punishment.
“How many times do I have to say it? We’re giving you a chance.”

They almost blurted out that they didn’t need that kind of “chance.”
But something told them… they shouldn’t say that.
Only after finishing the torture-like training did they finally learn the reason they were summoned and put through this.

“From now on, you’re going ~Nоvеl𝕚ght~ to support Woo Baek. He needs a power base, or the other classes will crush him.”
Everyone looked confused at Yeon Woo Jin’s words.
“Not you?”

“I’m just an ordinary student of Baegyeong High School.”
Everyone stared at him in disbelief.
Clearly, Yeon Woo Jin’s idea of “ordinary” didn’t match theirs.

“What’s with those eyes? Still got some energy left, huh? Should we go one more round?”
“N-no!”
“Y-yeah! You’re totally just a normal student!”

“If anyone at school starts acting weird around me, they’ll get a special lesson. Got it? Act natural. Natural.”
“Uh-huh…”
Like that was even possible.

Just looking at him made their knees tremble and cold sweat break out.
“If you see any lower-class kids getting bullied, you step in and handle it. Got it?”
“Got it.”

“No transfers. Everyone graduates from Baegyeong High School. No exceptions.”
Everyone nodded.
“Good. That’s it for today. We’ll meet again tomorrow.”

“…T-tomorrow too?!”
"Well, obviously. Training isn’t something you do for one day and then quit. From now on, you’ll come here every single day and train with us.”
Everyone looked like they were about to cry.

But what could they do?
“F-fine. Got it…”
As the group dispersed, Jang Un turned to Yeon Woo Jin.

“Are you seriously giving them a shot?”
“A shot? Please. Yesterday, the moment those guys disappeared, the rest of the punks started lifting their heads again.”
“What do you mean?”

“I mean the others started picking on the weak ones. I can’t step in every single time some little shit shows up, so it's better to train these guys and have them keep order.”
Yeon Woo Jin looked at Seon Woo Baek and said,
“You’re the Lower-Class First now, so make sure the younger students have a peaceful environment for their classes.”

“Got it.”
“I’m counting on you.”
When Yeon Woo Jin said I'm counting on you, Seon Woo Baek froze in place.

He stared at Yeon Woo Jin with a disbelieving look and muttered,
“Y-you’re counting on… me?”
Pat, pat.

Yeon Woo Jin lightly tapped Seon Woo Baek’s shoulder and walked away.
Seon Woo Baek watched him go, and slowly, his expression brightened.
“Y-you heard that, right? Woo Jin said… he believes in me!”

“Yeah, I heard.”
“I-I didn’t mishear, right?!”
“I heard it too.”

“W-Woo Jin said he believes in me… in me?!”
“That good, huh?”
“Of course it is! It’s Woo Jin! If he believes in me, that’s everything!”

Seon Woo Baek’s eyes gleamed with a new light.
“I have to live up to his trust! Starting tomorrow, we’re patrolling every class!”
He was so fired up, Jang Un couldn’t help but let out a dry laugh.

“Yeah, good luck with that.”
“Yep!”

****
The next day.
To live up to Yeon Woo Jin’s trust, Seon Woo Baek took action.

He headed first to the Baekho Class, determined to stop any bullying.
Sure enough, he saw a group in the corner surrounding a kid.
It reminded him of his old self.

“Hey, stand him up straight. Here we go!”
A big kid was charging at a trembling, terrified boy.
Just as he jumped in to kick the boy—

WHAM!
“Uurgh!”
Crash!

The big kid was hit by something and went flying into the wall.
“Ghh… Wh-who the hell?!”
The kid looked around, furious, searching for whoever attacked him.

“It was me.”
In his line of sight stood Seon Woo Baek.
The Lower-Class First.

“Y-you? What are you doing here?”
“What, am I not allowed to come here?”
“N-no, I didn’t mean it like that.”

“What were you doing with that kid?”
“J-just messing around, for fun…”
“For fun? You were about to kick him.”

“S-sorry.”
“I’m feeling bored too. Go stand over there.”
“…What?”

“You just said you were going to kick him because you were bored. Well, I’m bored now. So go stand over there.”
“W-Woo Baek…”
Smack!

“Not moving? Huh? You know how I am. Want me to show you what I’m like? Or should we go outside and talk… privately?”
Seon Woo Baek said it with a terrifying expression, even slapping him across the face. The big kid immediately dropped to his knees.
“I-I was wrong!”

“Why are you apologizing to me?”
At Seon Woo Baek’s words, the big kid quickly turned to the boy he had been bullying.
“I-I’m sorry! I was wrong!”

The boy stood frozen, unable to understand what was going on.
Seon Woo Baek leaned in and spoke quietly to the big kid.
“If he doesn’t forgive you, you’re dead meat today.”

The big kid looked at him, eyes shaking.
And then he felt it—an overwhelming, chilling killing intent that made his skin crawl.
“Does it look like I’m joking?”

“N-no…”
The big kid scrambled toward the confused boy again and bowed down.
“I’m sorry! Please forgive me! I swear I’ll never do it again!”

The boy didn’t know what to do. He looked completely lost.
Seon Woo Baek approached him with a gentle tone.
“That scared you, huh? Geez, look at that cold sweat.”

“Ah, no… s-sorry.”
“Huh? You’re the victim. Why are you apologizing? He’s the one in the wrong.”
The boy looked around as if trying to figure out whether this was some kind of elaborate prank.

“If he ever bothers you again or tries to threaten you, run straight to the Hyeonmu Class and tell me. Got it?”
“I-I can do that?”
“Of course. Everyone in this class, listen up! If anyone bullies you or tries to mess with you—come to me. Got it?”

Then he looked over at the big kid and his group and gave a low, quiet warning.
“Keep it quiet. Unless you really wanna die.”
Right as the bullies were about to respond—

“What the hell’s going on? Why are you making a scene in someone else’s class?”
The top student of the Jujak Class, Jin Jo, had arrived.
His and Seon Woo Baek’s eyes met in the air, sharp and hostile.

“I’m managing the lower-class students.”
“The Lower-Class First hasn’t been officially decided yet. Didn’t you hear what Senior Gwak Pyeong said? They’re going to re-evaluate.”
Seon Woo Baek let out a slight chuckle.

From the looks of it, Jin Jo had been through some intense training. There wasn’t a single uninjured spot on him.
But Seon Woo Baek wasn’t afraid.
“Until they re-evaluate, I’m still the Lower-Class First. So it’s my job to manage the kids.”

“I don’t accept that.”
At Jin Jo’s words, Seon Woo Baek’s gaze turned fierce.
“Don’t accept it? So what? You wanna do this here and now?”

“I don’t see why not.”
“You don’t look like you’re in any condition to fight. Don’t do something you’ll regret. Just sit down and rest.”
