The Lycan's Forsaken Mate

Chapter 6: A New Prisoner

Hailey

Despite being protected by Asher from Levi, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a war coming and I was going to be caught in the crossfire. It has been days and I haven't heard a word from Asher. I knew he might be my protector but was I safe? Or am I just a pawn in a game I do not understand? I began to question if Asher even cared for me because half of the time he spent protecting me from any threats, he barely made eye contact with me. I could still remember his face after his confrontation with Levi; there was this shame in his eyes like he had done something he wasn't supposed to do. And I could tell that he blames me for it.

I sighed, the pain from the bruises I had sustained earlier. I couldn't do anything properly; I have been idle, and it wasn't in my nature to be not after working my whole life. I feel more like a prisoner here and there was no one coming to save me. I could tell. Even Levi had his limit. It didn't feel good to be wanted by that man who had rejected me and had sex with someone else while I was forced to watch. When people talk about the hold your mate has on you when you find your bond, I always thought it was an exaggeration, but after that experience, I could tell why mates fall for traps set by their lovers because they know every point of vulnerability.

I sighed as a subtle knock distracted me from my thoughts. A maid walked in with a small cart of food. She served me a pancakes with eggs and maple sauce. She stretched her hands after thanking her, "The king asked me to deliver it to you. When you are done, I'll take you to him." I already had a hunch of what was going to happen but I opened the note, reading the breath handwritten calligraphy letters.

'When you are done eating and taking your meds, come to the office.' Just like that? I was just going to obey everything he said after he kept me here for days without even coming to see if I was alive. I had already lost interest in the food immediately and demanded the maid to take me to him. I walked through the hallways and the silence became deafening as I tried to muster the courage to see him.

After knocking, I sauntered in without another word. "You asked to see me."

He narrowed his eyes as if checking me out to see if I was fine. "You just had your food, how come you are here now."

"Can we go straight to the point and tell me why I am here."

"Are you pissed at me?" I avoided his gaze which was saying a lot. "Well, that answers it. From my knowledge, you have nothing to be angry about. If anything I should be the one that's pissed because you are keeping things from me and I am trying so hard to keep it together so do not provoke me"

"Provoke you? You are keeping me here and you should have left me to go my separate ways. You never even checked up on me once, but you keep me locked up in a luxury room, and you think I should be grateful to you because, after all, you saved me. You know what, I am taking back everything I said, I just want to find my way out of the grasp of anything that concerns rules and games."

Asher kept staring at me blankly. Standing up from beside the desk and sitting at the edge of his fine desk.."Do you think I want this? Do you think this is a game? Do you think I want any of this? I do not. I am perfectly fine by myself. Fate has a sense of humour sending me you for a mate. I didn't come see you because I was pissed." He paused for a while. "I wanted to know what the fuss was all about, and from what I could tell, it didn't seem you were willing to give me any form of information."

I sighed. It's not like I had a choice. It was clear that he was with me out of duty. Holding on to his duty as king and as my mate. From his calm demeanour, one would think that he would have a nice heart. I could see why everyone was so scared of him, he was a really cold man. Cold and distant.

"What do you want to know?"

"Why is Levi after you? Why does he want you so badly?" I sighed, trying to avoid his scrutinizing gaze. I knew from the start that was what he was talking about but I didn't know why the hell he couldn't just leave it alone.

"I just found out we were mates. In the process of finding out that he was screwing another woman, and while forcing me to watch, he rejected me afterwards" The memory was more haunting than I imagined.

"I have a feeling, you are not telling me everything I need to know about this. I am only asking you as a courtesy, if I go digging and I find out you did something shady, Levi would be the least of your problems."

I gulped in fear. "I didn't know what happened. The anger and rage just be uncontrollable; I flared up, and I think I hurt the girl he was screwing with. I don't know if she is alive or not. I swear I didn't mean to hurt her." Asher was a man of few words and that makes his threats more potent because it wouldn't be difficult for him to carry out.

"So...he hasn't touched you? " I shook my head, grimacing. "Good. He is trying to indict you...Taking your case to the supreme council so he'd have you back, probably punish you for what you have done, but I would make that go away. It would do you a lot of good if you don't tell anyone that we are mates." He was one breath away from me now and I couldn't control what my body felt for him while he was this close.

"I have something I need to ask you." He gave me a silent nod.

"I would want a job or anything to keep me occupied."

"Would you want to be my slave?" I coughed, not knowing what he meant by that.

"What..."

He chuckled. "You should have seen your face. Don't worry about that. Well, I do need someone to help me plan my schedules and probably follow me to these meetings and gather personal information... Also, I visit the orphanage every week, but I haven't been able to go there now because I have too many things at hand. Would you want to take care of all that?"

I smiled. "Like a personal assistant? "

"If you want to call it that, then fine. But you'd be my prisoner except you wouldn't receive any harsh treatment like menial jobs or that. You'd help around the pack when needed but my need comes first. But I must warn you, if you defy me, there will be consequences."
