Chapter 17 - I Want To Work For The Young Master
Chapter 17: I Want To Work For The Young Master
────────────────────────────────────
Gamujin, the general manager of Golden Wall Pavilion, looked at the Heavenly Divine Healer with a surprised expression.
Who wouldn’t be surprised?
“You’re saying you’d like to rely on the Golden Wall Pavilion?”
The Heavenly Divine Healer corrected him.
“I want to work for Young Master Byeok Taesan.”
From the manager’s perspective, it was essentially the same thing. After all, Byeok Taesan was a member of the Golden Wall Pavilion—or rather, the Golden Wall Merchants.
Working for Byeok Taesan effectively meant working for the Golden Wall Merchants. At least, that was how the manager saw it.
“We’d be delighted to have you. Truly, you’ve made an excellent decision. While the Golden Wall Merchants may not be renowned across the entire world, we’re far more stable and well-established than most well-known groups. We’ll make sure you’re treated generously.”
The Heavenly Divine Healer shook his head.
“Young Master Byeok Taesan said he would take care of it himself.”
Only then did the manager come to his senses.
This was a clear demarcation.
He quickly took a step back.
“Ah, I understand. It must be because of the maids under the Second Young Master.”
“Well… among other reasons. Honestly, treating the Young Master will take quite some time. A month or two won’t be enough. I’ll likely need to dedicate my entire focus for several years.”
“For you to dedicate yourself so thoroughly to treating our Young Master, we are truly grateful. We’ll ensure you’re generously compensated. Don’t hesitate—it’s money we’ve already budgeted for, so just accept it.”
The manager grinned as he spoke.
After all, no matter how much the Heavenly Divine Healer tried to distance himself, Byeok Taesan was part of the Golden Wall Merchants.
Drawing lines would ultimately be futile.
“In any case, I’ll visit again soon. Are you sure this place is suitable for your stay?”
“It’ll suffice.”
“Ah… I see. Considering you mentioned focusing all your efforts… Once again, thank you.”
“Think nothing of it.”
Of course, despite his polite words, the Heavenly Divine Healer felt differently.
He could no longer separate himself from Byeok Taesan.
Staying here wasn’t just convenient—it was necessary.
Once the manager respectfully bid farewell and left, the Heavenly Divine Healer let out a heavy sigh, as if the ground beneath him was sinking.
How had things gotten so complicated?
“All because of a mere hundred gold coins…!”
Of course, a hundred gold coins wasn’t an insignificant amount of money.
And he didn’t have a choice.
With his financial situation completely drained, how could he resist the allure of a hundred gold coins?
At the time, it had seemed like a minor task.
Who would have thought he’d encounter such a terrifying individual here?
“But who is he, really? He doesn’t seem like just another merchant heir…”
As he recalled his meeting with Byeok Taesan, the Heavenly Divine Healer’s face grew pale.
Just the thought of it was enough to terrify him.
* * *
“Young Master, are you certain this is okay?”
“What is?”
“I mean the Heavenly Divine Healer.”
Cheon Kyungwan couldn’t hide his anxiety.
He was the one who had applied restrictions to the twelve doctors the Heavenly Divine Healer had brought along.
While following Byeok Taesan’s orders, he couldn’t make sense of the situation.
Even more perplexing was how the twelve doctors cooperated without hesitation when the restrictions were placed.
It was all incomprehensible to him.
“Then again, ever since I got involved with the Young Master, nothing has made sense.”
Seeing Cheon Kyungwan’s troubled expression, Byeok Taesan spoke.
“What? Are you worried because I excluded the Heavenly Divine Healer?”
“No, that’s not it… but are you certain it’s alright? Excluding only the Heavenly Divine Healer might cause issues later.”
Byeok Taesan smirked.
“So, you’re saying I should have done it properly?”
“No, that’s not what I mean…”
Cheon Kyungwan started to explain himself but shut his mouth.
Upon reflection, Byeok Taesan was right.
In the past, Cheon Kyungwan would have been more concerned about the very idea of restricting the Heavenly Divine Healer and his group.
Yet here he was, naturally worrying about the consequences of excluding one person.
“I handled it myself. You don’t need to worry.”
“What? You handled it yourself, Young Master?”
“Your level isn’t high enough yet.”
The Heavenly Divine Healer had complete control over his own body.
Manipulating his pressure points was trivial for someone like him.
Moreover, he could disguise his pressure points if needed.
For someone like Cheon Kyungwan, applying restrictions to the Heavenly Divine Healer was impossible.
“Then why did the others…?”
If Byeok Taesan could handle it himself, it would have been much safer for him to do so.
“I’m still a patient, remember? Do you know how hard it is for me to exert even a little strength?”
Cheon Kyungwan nodded slightly, his expression finally showing understanding.
“I keep forgetting the Young Master is unwell.”
It was understandable—Byeok Taesan didn’t act like someone sick.
With a sly grin, Byeok Taesan continued.
“Still, I appreciated that he understood everything without needing an explanation.”
As a skilled physician, the Heavenly Divine Healer immediately recognized the restrictions placed on him.
He also realized they were unbreakable and fell into despair, albeit briefly.
What confused him the most was how Byeok Taesan knew such a method.
“But… shouldn’t you be careful around someone who will be treating you? If he holds a grudge, he might…”
“Diseases can be cured just by spending time at the courtesan house. His job isn’t to heal me.”
Though Cheon Kyungwan found this reasoning absurd, he decided to accept Byeok Taesan’s words.
“Then why bother keeping him around?”
“Let’s just say… for multiple reasons.”
The main excuse Byeok Taesan had in mind was to use the Heavenly Divine Healer as a justification once his condition improved.
He couldn’t tell people like Cheon Kyungwan, Soso, or Dan Yeong that his health improved simply by frequenting courtesan houses.
The other, more significant reason was the twelve doctors accompanying the Heavenly Divine Healer.
“Those people aren’t just ordinary physicians.”
Cheon Kyungwan’s gaze filled with curiosity as he stared at Byeok Taesan.
•••
Chae Miryeong, the wife of Byeok Taesoo, the head of the Golden Wall Merchants, was the daughter of a small merchant group in the outskirts of Wuhan.
Since childhood, she had grown up admiring the Golden Wall Merchants, making it her ultimate goal.
She knew she could never become its master, so she became the master’s wife instead.
But that alone wasn’t enough.
She wielded no real influence within the Golden Wall Merchants.
To control the Golden Wall Merchants entirely, one needed to become its true master.
Alternatively, one could manipulate the master to one’s advantage.
Chae Miryeong chose the latter approach. She believed that once her son, Byeok Jehyeok, became the head of the Golden Wall Merchants, she could easily control him to achieve her goals.
Everything was progressing smoothly—until the news she heard today.
“The Heavenly Divine Healer has decided to stay at the Golden Wall Estate? Is it true he can actually cure Byeok Taesan’s illness?”
“Yes, but he mentioned it would take considerable time. In the meantime, he’s uncertain if the Young Master’s body can endure the treatment.”
Chae Miryeong bit her lip hard.
“I heard the Heavenly Divine Healer never stays in one place for long. It will be the same this time, won’t it?”
“Well… it appears the Heavenly Divine Healer has pledged his service to the Second Young Master.”
Chae Miryeong’s eyes widened as if they were about to pop out.
“What are you saying? He’s pledged himself to someone? The Heavenly Divine Healer to Byeok Taesan?”
“Yes. He has even unpacked all his belongings.”
Chae Miryeong raised her hand.
“Wait, hold on. This is hard to process. So, are you saying the Heavenly Divine Healer has joined our Golden Wall Merchants? That healer?”
“Well, technically, he drew a line, claiming he serves only the Second Young Master. But isn’t that the same thing? Yes, he’s effectively part of our organization.”
“This is absurd!”
“Things around the Second Young Master have been unusually strange lately.”
Chae Miryeong glared at the man reporting to her, Byeok Cheonil.
“Is this how carelessly you intend to handle things? How do you expect to secure full control over the Record Pavilion in the future?”
“My apologies. But this incident caught everyone off guard, leaving them unsure how to respond.”
“I told you to pay attention when Cheon Kyungwan aligned himself with Byeok Taesan! But you ignored it, and now look at this mess!”
Byeok Cheonil had his own excuses.
Cheon Kyungwan had solidified his position as one of Byeok Taesan’s people only a few days ago.
What could possibly have been done in that short time?
The recent happenings around Byeok Taesan were so rapid and chaotic that there had been no chance to intervene.
“Regardless, handle this immediately. I will not tolerate even the smallest obstacle in my son’s path to becoming the master of this organization.”
“I will bear that in mind.”
When Byeok Cheonil withdrew, Chae Miryeong took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.
Although Byeok Taesan had been a thorn in her side, she had not given it much thought.
After all, he wasn’t expected to live much longer.
“I should have opposed bringing in the Heavenly Divine Healer from the start.”
Chae Miryeong regretted not having been more assertive at the time.
Within the merchants, she held no formal authority. She was prohibited from interfering in the organization’s operations.
However, that did not mean she was entirely without influence.
Through her methods, she often recruited and influenced key figures within the organization to achieve her desired outcomes.
But when it came to bringing in the Heavenly Divine Healer, she had not actively intervened.
Byeok Taesoo had been adamantly in favor of it, and she hadn’t wanted to strain her relationship with her husband over a minor matter.
And now, this was the result.
How could she not regret it?
“It seems… I need to act more aggressively.”
Chae Miryeong bit her lip again, muttering softly.
* * *
“Will you be accompanying us, Divine Healer?”
At Cheon Kyungwan’s question, the Heavenly Divine Healer nodded as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“It is my duty to always look after the Young Master’s health. If I don’t accompany him, who else will?”
Cheon Kyungwan didn’t press further.
Whether the healer accompanied them or not didn’t matter to him, as long as Byeok Taesan approved.
So he turned his gaze to Byeok Taesan.
Byeok Taesan, unconcerned, was walking leisurely toward the courtesans’ house.
It was then that Yoo Seoyeon, waiting for her moment, asked, “By the way, is it alright for someone as ill as our Young Master to visit the courtesans’ house daily? He stays up nearly every night.”
The Heavenly Divine Healer’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Stays up all night?”
Yoo Seoyeon, clearly enjoying herself, continued, “Yes! He doesn’t sleep at all and stays up all night. That’s bad for one’s health, isn’t it?”
The healer’s gaze fixed sharply on Byeok Taesan.
He sidled up to Byeok Taesan and cautiously asked, “What’s your secret?”
Byeok Taesan looked at the healer with a bewildered expression.
“Honestly, men should support each other, don’t you think? Oh… now that I think of it, I haven’t properly taken your pulse yet. How about I do it now? I can examine you while we walk. You just need to give me your hand.”
“Your mouth is annoying.”
“Ah, do I talk too much? You see, it’s a habit born from trying to put patients at ease. People naturally start sharing their stories when I speak. Although, I must admit, I talk far more. But isn’t it all useful advice?”
Suddenly, Byeok Taesan thrust his hand toward the healer’s mouth.
The Heavenly Divine Healer flinched, shutting his mouth instinctively. He didn’t even have time to tilt his head away.
A cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
If this had been an attack, and if there had been a blade in that hand, his mouth would’ve been pierced.
It was a flawless strike, exploiting the gap between breaths.
“What are you doing? Didn’t you say you’d take my pulse?”
“Oh… Right! The pulse! Of course, let me do that.”
Forcing a laugh, the healer carefully took hold of Byeok Taesan’s wrist.
His examination was anything but professional.
As they walked, the healer discreetly assessed Byeok Taesan’s condition.
The pulse check continued all the way to the courtesans’ house. Yet the healer repeatedly tilted his head in confusion.
“This is strange. This can’t be right.”
The Heavenly Divine Healer stared at Byeok Taesan with suspicion. At some point, he released his wrist.
He had already inspected every part of the man’s body thoroughly, especially his energy flow, which he scrutinized due to the alleged Severed Meridians Syndrome.
“What? Did you find something strange in the results?”
The healer hesitated before cautiously speaking.
“Uh… Young Master.”
“Speak.”
“Are you sure you’re alive?”
A chilling silence fell over the group.
