Calix let out a satisfied sigh as his muscular body pressed against her soft form. The subtle fragrance that tickled his nostrils was sweet and alluring. He gently ran his hand along Asella’s lower back, as if caressing her.

Asella, who had her face buried in Calix’s chest for quite some time, subtly lifted her head and looked up at him, questioning, “Will you promise me?”

Her voice carried a desperate tone as she leaned closer to him.

“Will you truly save Mariel?”

It was an undeniably pitiful expression on her face. Calix responded in a low voice, as if his throat were parched.

“Yes.”

Perhaps he had seen it coming from the moment she grabbed his arm. Whenever he came into contact with his wife’s body, he found himself wanting to heed her every word, even though he knew his actions were irrational; it was as if he were possessed by something that took away his senses.

Calix instinctively sensed the danger he was in. The blood flowing through his veins incessantly warned him. Being around his wife was no longer the place to make rational decisions, but he couldn’t survive being far from her either.

The sensations transmitted through his wife’s fingertips were so sweet that they melted his mind into a blur. It was an intense allure that could easily become addictive with just one experience.

“I will do as you wish.”

Therefore, he had no choice but to comply without hesitation.

It had been three days since Calix returned to the castle.

By now, from the knights of the Grand Duchy to the stable keepers, there was not a single person who was unaware of the news that Lord Chartus, the Marquis, met his fate.

Of course, no one was foolish enough to dare to speak of it in front of Asella. They quickly realized how they should act in the future based on the attitude the Duke had shown towards the Duchess on the day he returned after annihilating her family.

“I heard that as soon as His Excellecny returned, he went straight to see Her Highness.”

“He didn’t leave the room until well past midnight, they say.”

“The physician has been closely monitoring Her Highness’s health morning and evening.”

“I hear that the kitchens have been ordered to take extra care making the dishes Her Highness consumes.”

Rumors spread in secret from mouth to mouth among the servants.

“But why did His Excellency do that to the House of Chartus himself?”

“Why? Those scoundrels took away Her Highness’s family. He sought revenge on her behalf.”

“What about Lady Mariel?”

“I heard this from the knight who serves His Excellency up close…”

The servant cautiously extended her head and checked if anyone was around, then whispered to her colleagues in a low voice.

“It seems Her Ladyship has already been entered into the Loctrin family register officially, the house of her biological father. Lady Mariel is the only heir, and Her Highness will be her guardian.”

“Goodness, is that true?”

“That’s what they say.”

“But does Her Highness know?”

“This doesn’t seem to be the case by the look of it. But won’t His Excellency mention it soon?”

Their prudence towards their mistress intensified. However, Asella, who was completely absorbed in worrying about her future, failed to notice anything.

It was after finishing their lunch. Asella looked at Mariel, who was munching on her dessert, then slowly opened her mouth.

“Mariel.”

“Yes?”
