Chapter 2: Duality
Morning came around, Zachary was met with the savory scent of can filling the air and he quickly washed up and headed to the kitchen for breakfast.
"Good morning, Dad! What's for breakfast today?"
"Today we are having bacon and eggs, and you can have either water or milk for a drink."
"I'll have milk, please."
Behind Zachary, a woman with brown hair and brown eyes slowly crept up behind him. Then, she reached out and gave the boy a hug.
"Mom! Good morning, what are we going to do today?"
"Hm, let me think. Umm… let's do whatever you want today, how about that, huh Zach?"
Zachary quickly turned around and giggled as he hugged his mother.
The happy family laughed together and ate, then went into the capital of the Wayne Kingdom to do some shopping. Once there, they made many stops. They bought clothes, food, toys, and had all around good time. Before they returned home, they decided to do something charitable, they donated a large sum of money towards a hospital where Zachary was born at, attempting to teach him to always be grateful and never forget where you came from.
Once they arrived home, Zachary's dad started teaching him how to ride a horse, after practicing for a few hours, Zachary was slowly improving, being able to nearly take the reins alone. Dinner came around and Zachary was the one who chose what they got to eat. He'd chosen a simple but exceedingly delicious dish, Shepards pie. It was simple to make, you need a large, flat pan, hamburger meat, mixed vegetables, and mashed potatoes. Start with mixing the meat and vegetables in the bottom of the pan, then put the mashed potatoes above that mixture, if wanted, cheese could be spread across the top as well.
Despite being high ranked nobles, Zachary's family usually opted to do everything themselves. They lived in a small but extravagant house, it was one floor with four bedrooms. Their house was located just outside the capital of the formerly esteemed Lee empire's capital.
In the outskirts of the Keria Empire, which regained some power after the war, there was a brother and sister who'd had a rude awakening. A man burred through the door of the shack at the crack of dawn, screaming at them to get up and start working. Leto and his siter, Halia, quickly woke up and began to follow their rude alarm clock.
Today, their schedule was simple but time consuming, they had to clean the barn, feed the animals, wash the smell off themselves, then clean the second floor of the Count's mansion. After they finished with the barn, the two siblings went to a nearby river and washed themselves off and their clothes. They had a meager lunch of bread and potatoes, it was barely enough to fill even the smallest of stomachs but, it was all they were allowed for lunch.
The mansion was extremely large, the second floor had 8 rooms, during their cleaning, they had to stay out of sight from the Count's family, which was quite challenging. While stealthily traversing the mansion, they spent the next few hours sweeping up dust, doing laundry, and throwing out trash. For dinner, they received the same rations they got for lunch, bread and potatoes.
However, tonight the siblings didn't return to the shack, they had concocted a plan, they were going to escape.
It was simple really, they would wait till night and go to the barn. Once it was night, they snuck out and headed to the barn. Once there, they bolted towards a distant fence. Nobody noticed the two running through the field and crossing the fence under the cover of night. There two moons shining overhead, one had the right half illuminated, and the other had the left half illuminated, under its dull light the duo seemed invisible. They reached the fence, climbed it, and had finally liberated themselves from the abominable Count's estate.
Of course, they weren't empty handed, they had saved up many of the rations and had a few containers with water in them. And although they did manual labor, their bodies were still weak and malnourished. They ran for as long as they could then decided to rest in the forest, hoping that they wouldn't encounter anyone… or anything.
They both knew that the forest housed many nightmares and they had to be careful but, they were both exhausted from running for so long. So, they took a gamble, they both fell asleep under a tree, cuddled together to try and escape the cold that permeated the forest.
While they were sleeping, there was something near them, something sinister, dangerous. However, it never got a chance to approach. It neared them, then simply died. Again, something got close but never reached them. It was as if an angel of death was protecting the two, any living being dropped dead by simply nearing the two sleeping siblings.
