The God of Coding, Becoming an IT Conglomerate

chapter 15

15. WWW

World Wide Web.

Also called WWW or W3 for short, it refers to a global information space where users can share information through the Internet.

If you ask ordinary people what the Internet does, most likely they will answer, ‘Open an Internet window, go to an Internet site, and surf the web’.

The web browser, referred to here as the Internet window, is nothing more than a role that outputs documents or files on the web.

World Wide Web technology provides information in the form of hypertext to the web browser for the first time.

“Are you going to proceed with the investment like the last time this time?”

After arriving in Paris after a long 12-hour flight, Miru asked Hoyoung.

“no. It is not an investment this time.”

“Then what happened?”

“Most of my money is invested in Dell, so I have very little cash. In other words, a business proposal?”

Although he came to Paris, one of the world’s best tourist cities, Hoyoung had no time to enjoy sightseeing.

Hoyoung and Miru took a short break with a simple meal, then boarded a plane heading to the border with Switzerland again.

.

.

.

“Turn it off!”

Miru stretched out making a strange sound.

It was all over 16 hours of flight, so my body was tired.

Miru looked at Hoyeong who was looking at her and said.

“No, aren’t you tired, Director?”

“Iknow, right. I’m not that tired. Is it because you are twenty?”

“Oops, here I am the boss, not the director.”

In Hangeul and People, except for Lee Jin-chan, the rest of the members were called directors.

“Miru-san, in case you don’t know, I hope you keep calling me director even when it’s just the two of us.”

“It’s because of Gaia Investments. Okay. We will be careful in the future.”

“thanks.”

“Director. He works on his laptop all the time even on the plane, and he seems like a complete workaholic.”

Hoyeong laughed at Mirue’s words.

“I don’t think I’m that addicted to work.”

“No, what is it! Isn’t it usually the main job of college freshmen to make girlfriends while drinking and meeting?”

“Strangely, I have no relationship with a woman.”

“Your face is so handsome. That’s a waste of manpower. A waste of manpower. People should live while having fun.”

“I enjoy programming the most.”

“Gosh···. It looks like you’ll never get married for the rest of your life.”

Miru grumbled, but looked around.

It is to see if there are any suspicious people and if there are no risk factors.

“OK. There is nothing wrong.”

Hearing Miru’s confirmation, he moved again.

Drop off at the airport and rent a car for another hour and a half.

Hoyoung was finally able to reach his destination.

European Particle Physics Laboratory.

It was a place I had visited several times in my previous life.

Later, in 2008, the world’s largest and highest energy particle collider, the Large Hadron Collider, was built here, and Hoyoung designed the control program for the Large Hadron Collider.

Hoyoung went into the research center with familiarity.

Today was an open conference day, held only three days a year.

Particle physics was not a very popular discipline at the time, so not as many people came as expected.

After registering for the conference, we entered the exhibition hall.

‘You came right on time.’

Hoyoung looked at the software engineering section in one corner and smiled.

The reason I checked the time was because of Tim Berners-Lee.

He, like Ho-young, was an engineer who did not do much outside activities.

Although they didn’t like to step forward, their researchers were obliged to attend the conference.

So he used to show up to conferences later than everyone else, go back faster than anyone else, and just pretend to be there.

“Hello?”

Hoyoung approached Tim Berners-Lee and talked to him first, paying no attention to the other booths.

“American?”

“No. I’m Korean.”

Berners-Lee told Ho-Young that he was rather interested when Ho-Young told him that he was from a country he had never heard of.

“Thank you for coming to our software engineering lab booth. Unfortunately, there is not much to announce this year.”

Hoyeong knew why Berners-Lee spoke so coldly.

This year, too, a study on the Internet proposed by Tim Berners-Lee was excluded from this year’s research project.

The Particle Physics Laboratory had an internal Ethernet installed, so it was at the level of exchanging data online.

So Tim Berners-Lee’s Internet using hypertext.

In other words, he proposed a basic concept for the WWW, but was rejected.

This was something I had been devising and planning since I started entering the Particle Physics Institute in 1980, but it must have been quite disappointing as it had not been accepted for several years.

“hello. First, let me introduce myself. My name is Hoyoung Yun from Korea. If you have difficulty with pronunciation, Mr. Please call me Yoon.”

“Nice to meet you. My name is Tim Berners-Lee. I have been studying here for almost 10 years already and I am British. What about the back?”

“This is Miru who came with me.”

Miru and Berners-Lee also briefly exchanged greetings.

“In fact, I participated in the conference today because I really wanted to have a conversation after reading your thesis.”

“Paper? What thesis?”

“Isn’t there a paper you put out earlier this year? About Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)…”

“ah! Did you come after seeing the thesis?”

“yes. I was very impressed with the future Internet era that you are drawing.”

At Hoyoung’s words, Berners-Lee’s face brightened noticeably.

There is no researcher who will not like to say that he has been impressed by the field he is interested in, and that he has been impressed by the paper he wrote.

“Sit over here. Shall we talk more?”

Berners-Lee even gave up his seat to Hoyoung.

There was another reason he hated conferences.

Particle physics, such as particle acceleration and antimatter, were the main research topics, and software engineering always took a back seat.

Even the conference attendees had nothing to do with his software engineering booth.

“I am a lead developer at a Korean company called Hangeul and People.”

“no wonder. You are a programmer.”

Berners-Lee thought he had met someone he might be able to talk to after a long time.

A software engineer among physicists, he had no one to talk about except for his teammates.

“I think the idea of using the Internet with hypertext is great.”

Hypertext is text that can be accessed instantly from one document to another on the Internet. Existing Internet documents had to be read sequentially from the beginning as if reading a book. However, hypertext is a method in which each text has a link called a link, and the document can be freely moved according to the link.

“Good to see you. Hypertext has endless possibilities. Right now, the Internet network is not connected to the whole world, but I have no doubt that soon the whole world will use one Internet. That would enable an instant exchange of information between researchers working at universities and research institutes around the world.”

‘I’m afraid someone isn’t a researcher.’

Hoyoung laughed inwardly.

Tim Berners-Lee was a researcher who foresaw the potential of the internet but couldn’t help it.

Thinking of the potential of the Internet in terms of research?

“So I devised a new system and proposed it to the research institute. It is an information retrieval system that allows you to search for information on the Internet. However, my plan was not adopted as it was premature.”

The information retrieval system that Berners-Lee talks about here insignificantly.

That was the WWW, the core of the Internet.

“If you listen to the story, it seems to be a technology that is essential for the present as well as the future. But why on earth does the research institute not approve the research?”

“What···. There are many reasons, but in the end it can be summarized in three things. Money, manpower, time.”

Berners-Lee’s face softened slightly as he spoke.

“Right now, there is only one software team in the lab, but we already have a project in progress. Moreover, even if this project is finished on time, research on the Internet system cannot be started immediately. I have to start from a zero base with nothing, but there is no way the director of the research center will allow that.”

In the original history, Tim Berners-Lee started researching the WWW in 1989 and completed it in 1990.

Even then, he was able to complete it only with the help of Belgian computer scientist Robert Cajo, not by himself.

“What project are you working on right now?”

“I’m making a control program for a particle collider.”

Hoyoung looked at Berners-Lee with serious eyes.

“Then, after completing the particle collider control program, if you have basic information about the Internet search system, can you convince the head of the research institute?”

“Isn’t that nagging?”

“I have a way.”

“yes? I beg your pardon!”

Berners-Lee exclaimed in surprise.

Then, with a surprised face, he stared at Hoyoung’s face for a long time.

However, Hoyoung’s expression remained calm.

For some reason, those unwavering eyes gave Venus Lee confidence.

After thinking about it for a while, Venus Lee made a decision and spoke to Hoyeong.

“I don’t think this is what we are talking about here. Please follow me to my lab.”

Berners-Lee roughly packed his things, left the booth, and took the lead.

In between, other researchers asked, ‘Team leader, where are you going?’ and so on, but Berners-Lee didn’t care and moved on.

Berners-Lee’s lab was on the second floor of the building next door.

None of the other researchers could find out if they were out for the conference.

“May I ask what the method is? If it’s a prank, I’ll kick you out of here right now.”

“Let’s look at this first.”

Hoyoung took out his laptop from his bag and turned it on.

After a short boot time, the computer turned on completely.

And Ho-young found time in Korea and showed Berners-Lee the source code he had been holding on to on the plane all the way to here.

“What? This···?”

Berners-Lee, who was reading the source, lost his words for a long time and fell into the sauce.

“Well···. This code… It’s not the Internet search system we think of… Rather… Oh My God. Is it software that uses a search system to output the information it finds to the user?”

“you’re right.”

“I tried to name the Internet search system the World Wide Web. It was like imagining an image of a spider web stretching all over the world.”

“World Wide Web. good. It’s a very nice name. Then I want to call the output software I just showed you like this. web browser.”

“Web browser!”

As it was originally, even after Tim Berners-Lee completed World Wide Web technology in 1989, it could not be shown to the world for a year, because there was no proper web browser.

It wasn’t until he eventually created his own browser in 1990 that World Wide Web technology began to dominate the world.

In fact, at first, Hoyoung was worried about preoccupying world wide web technology.

However, in his life before returning, he experienced enough of what happens when he becomes famous alone, just as the saying goes that all stones are right.

Also, there was a problem that the World Wide Web is not a simple technology, and the amount of work is also enormous.

That’s why I chose to remain as a partner by helping people who can develop in the first place to develop faster.

“ruler. Now you know I’m not talking empty words. You won’t be kicked out, will you?”

Berners-Lee’s eyes were burning with desire.

desire for knowledge.

It is an essential virtue that a good researcher should have.

“Are you saying you want to provide all of this source code?”

Berners-Lee’s voice trembled.

Seeing Berners-Lee like that, Hoyeong smiled and said,

“It depends on what Mr. Berners-Lee does.”

“What is that…?”

“ruler. Shall we begin negotiations now?”

Hoyoung’s smile looked a bit frightening(?).
