Chapter 119. A Midnight Visit
Ma Hongyu observed silently.
He wasn’t even sure what outcome he hoped for.
If the problem truly lay with the pendant, not only would his years of hard work become a joke.
There was also a real issue at hand.
Ye Cheng’s future.
The Sect Leader clearly wanted Ye Cheng’s life. Could he, as a master, simply stand by and watch?
Ma Hongyu’s thoughts were in turmoil.
He recalled scenes from the past.
Ye Cheng was his first disciple.
This Ye Cheng was talented and sensible. His filial piety towards his elders and affection for his fellow disciples went without saying. He also had a genuine love for spirit plants.
Ye Cheng had followed him for so many years, rarely leaving the spirit fields.
To describe Ye Cheng as detached from worldly affairs would be entirely accurate.
This time, he had been unwittingly drawn into a storm.
Yet the final consequence would fall on Ye Cheng’s shoulders.
Ma Hongyu bit his lip hard.
No matter what, if the Sect Leader truly intended to kill Ye Cheng, he would save his disciple at any cost.
But… how?
Ma Hongyu sat there, completely at a loss.
Just then, someone sent a message.
Ma Hongyu was startled. As if possessed, he reattached the pendant to Ye Cheng’s waist before going to open the barrier.
A disciple had arrived. He glanced at Ye Cheng lying on the bed and said sympathetically, “This Yun Jin is truly lawless. Senior Brother Ye has suffered unjustly.”
Ma Hongyu’s mind was in chaos. He could only offer a bitter smile.
The disciple, assuming he was overly angry, didn’t think much of it. He produced an exquisite porcelain bottle and handed it to Ma Hongyu. “Uncle Ma, these are secret healing pills bestowed by the Sect Leader. He says that after taking them, Senior Brother Ye should wake up in a day or two, barring any unforeseen circumstances. With these pills, there’s no need for worry.”
“Thank the Sect Leader for his grace,” Ma Hongyu said, appearing flattered.
The disciple went on to detail how rare and effective these pills were, and how the Sect Leader had gone to great lengths for their master-disciple pair.
Ma Hongyu listened with an expression of gratitude, nodding repeatedly until the disciple finally left.
Closing the barrier again, Ma Hongyu’s face instantly changed.
First, he removed the pendant once more, placing it far away. Then he examined the porcelain bottle with a peculiar expression.
He took out a pill and sniffed it.
Indeed, it was a superior healing medicine.
But whether it would actually help Ye Cheng’s condition was another matter.
Ma Hongyu found it tragic that he trusted Yun Jin’s words more than the Sect Leader’s.
He didn’t administer the pills to Ye Cheng, but continued to wait.
Meanwhile, the disciple had reported back to Zhao Wuji.
Zhao Wuji asked casually, “Was Ye Cheng not wearing the jade pendant I gifted him when he was injured?”
The disciple quickly replied, “He was wearing it. Even though Senior Brother Ye is unconscious, the pendant is still securely fastened. This time, Senior Brother Ye was injured due to extreme anger, which is why the pendant couldn’t take effect.”
“This Yun Jin is truly despicable,” Zhao Wuji said, a subtle smile playing on his lips. He then asked, “How did Ma Hongyu react after receiving the medicine?”
The disciple answered, “He was, of course, deeply grateful.”
Satisfied, Zhao Wuji nodded, “Very well, you may go.”
In the cave dwelling.
One hour passed.
Two hours passed.
Three hours passed.
Just as Ma Hongyu began to doubt whether Yun Jin had deceived him, Ye Cheng slowly opened his eyes.
“Disciple!” A flash of joy crossed Ma Hongyu’s eyes.
Ye Cheng was bewildered for a moment, then immediately got out of bed and said respectfully, “With an elder present, this disciple was selfishly resting. It was impolite. Please punish me, Master.”
Ma Hongyu looked at his rigid disciple with some exasperation before saying, “You’re injured. There’s no need for such formalities.”
Injured…
Ye Cheng slowly recalled his confrontation with Yun Jin.
“The Crescent Moon Grass…” Ye Cheng asked instinctively.
“Completely unharmed!” Ma Hongyu said, torn between laughter and tears.
He had already asked about this several times, yet it was still his first concern.
Ye Cheng first sighed in relief, then moved to go out and check personally.
Ma Hongyu had to grab him. “Don’t move! Let me ask you, how do you feel now?”
Ye Cheng moved his limbs and circulated his spiritual energy before answering honestly, “There’s no problem at all.”
Ma Hongyu narrowed his eyes.
The Sect Leader had provided pills, saying Ye Cheng would wake in a day or two after taking them.
Now, without taking the pills, but merely removing the pendant, he had woken in four hours.
In a way, the Sect Leader’s act of bestowing pills indirectly confirmed the pendant’s problem.
“Disciple,” Ma Hongyu said slowly, “You can’t go out yet. At least not for a day or two.”
“Why?” Ye Cheng was puzzled.
Ma Hongyu didn’t know how to explain. He could only say, “This is an order.”
Though worried about the spirit plants outside, Ye Cheng naturally had to obey his master’s command. He could only nod in agreement.
“I need to go out for a while,” Ma Hongyu said. “Stay here in the dwelling. Don’t leave, and if anyone visits, don’t make a sound or let anyone in to see you. Not even your Junior Brothers and Sisters. If someone tries to force their way in, contact me immediately. Understand?”
Ma Hongyu’s expression had turned serious.
Now that the Sect Leader’s intention to kill Ye Cheng was certain, as a master, he had to find a way out for his disciple.
And that way out…
Might lie with that person!
Seeing Ma Hongyu so serious, Ye Cheng didn’t dare be careless and quickly agreed.
Only then did Ma Hongyu hurriedly leave the dwelling, adding several layers to the barrier before departing.
It was late at night, and everyone knew Ye Cheng was recovering from injury. Under normal circumstances, no one should disturb him. If anything unexpected happened, he would rush back immediately.
Ma Hongyu donned a black cloak and took a roundabout route before entering Celestial Sword Peak through a small path.
As soon as he arrived, Gu Jinghong was already waiting.
Ma Hongyu’s heart skipped a beat.
Gu Jinghong said calmly, “My master knew Uncle Ma would come and had me wait here. This way, please.”
Ma Hongyu steadied himself and followed Gu Jinghong to meet Yun Jin.
“Uncle Ma,” Yun Jin greeted him obediently, rising to welcome him. “My behavior earlier today was inappropriate. Please forgive me.”
Yun Jin’s immediate apology caught Ma Hongyu off guard.
He wanted to say something but could only sigh, “If not for your intervention, my foolish disciple might have died silently.”
He now understood that Yun Jin’s actions that morning were to make him discover Ye Cheng’s problem early.
He owed her for this.
“I’m glad Uncle Ma doesn’t mind my interference,” Yun Jin said, looking docile.
Ma Hongyu lowered his voice and got straight to the point, “The Sect Leader wants to kill Ye Cheng. Since you knew the pendant was problematic, can you neutralize the poison?”
He didn’t know what had been done to the pendant. He had examined it repeatedly but found nothing amiss. Yet Yun Jin had discovered it early on.
Perhaps she had a solution.
