The Cold Heir

Chapter 7: New system

The world seemed oddly still as Ved rose from the captain's chair. The air around him was cold, heavy with an eerie silence that wrapped itself around the room.

Yet within Ved, a tempest of emotions brewed, carefully hidden behind his icy demeanor. His fingers traced the edge of the desk, and for a fleeting moment, the weight of what had just transpired pressed down on him.

Somewhere deep within the recesses of his mind, a faint flicker remained—a fragment of Nagi, stubborn and unyielding, refusing to be extinguished entirely.

"Still clinging on?" Ved muttered under his breath, his voice low and sharp. His expression hardened as he straightened his posture, shaking off the faint whispers of Nagi's lingering presence. "Pathetic."

A knock at the door broke the stillness, and Ved turned sharply, his expression neutral but his mind already calculating.

"Come in," he commanded, his voice carrying the authority that had once been synonymous with Ved Flack's name.

The door creaked open, revealing Ralf himself. The butler stepped inside, his movements precise and deliberate, his piercing gaze scanning the room. His expression was unreadable, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes as they landed on Ved.

"Sir," Ralf began, his tone formal but with a hint of hesitation, "I sensed a disturbance. Is everything all right?"

Ved's lips curled into a faint smirk, though his eyes remained cold. "Merely testing the limits of my body by channeling my mana."

Ralf's brow furrowed ever so slightly, but he gave a respectful nod. "I see."

"You can leave now," Ved replied curtly. He stepped past Ralf, his movements fluid and deliberate as he showed the way out toward the deck.

The words were sharp, cutting through the air like a blade. Ralf's jaw tightened, but he kept his composure. "Certainly, sir, as you command."

The silence in the captain's quarters was deafening. Ved sat motionless, the faint lantern light casting flickering shadows across the room. His gaze was sharp and calculating, his lips curling into a faint smirk. The weight of his memories settled in comfortably now, like an old coat slipping over his shoulders.

But before he could savor his victory, a sudden sharp noise pierced the stillness.

[System Alert: Host detected. Previous host synchronization incomplete]

Ved froze, the smirk faltering. The voice rang out, not in the room, but directly in his mind. A system notification? That was unexpected.

"Host?" he muttered aloud, his voice colder than the frost that had claimed the pirate leader in the last battle.

"What kind of trickery is this?"

The air around him seemed to hum with energy as a faint glow appeared in his peripheral vision. Lines of text—no, notifications—began to scroll across his mind.

[Previous host: Nagi. Status: Deceased]

[Switching to a new host detected: Ved Flack]

[System recalibrating for new host...]

[System reboot in progress]

"What… is this?" Ved growled, standing abruptly. His fingers gripped the hilt of his sword, his instincts screaming that this was something foreign—something intrusive.

[Welcome, Ved Flack. You are now the primary host]

[System: Unstable. Reboot required for adaptation]

Ved's eyes narrowed. "Reboot? What are you rebooting? Explain yourself."

For a moment, the notifications halted, and silence returned. Then, the voice spoke again, this time more direct, almost conversational.

[This system was originally integrated with Nagi, the former host. However, due to his soul fragment being consumed, the system must recalibrate to accommodate your soul and abilities. Please remain calm]

Ved laughed bitterly, the sound hollow in the empty room. "Remain calm? I don't need your commands, system. If you think you can control me, you'll be sorely disappointed."

The system did not respond to his provocation, continuing instead with its mechanical precision.

[Warning: Current system configuration incompatible with Ved Flack's capabilities.]

[Rebooting in 5... 4... 3...]

Ved felt a surge of panic—an unfamiliar sensation he quickly crushed beneath his iron will. "Rebooting? No, you—"

Before he could finish, the world around him dissolved into blinding light.

Ved found himself in the void once again, though this time it felt different. The oppressive weight of his clash with Nagi was gone, replaced by a sterile stillness. In the distance, faint lines of glowing code pulsed like veins in the darkness.

He turned slowly, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword, though it was nowhere to be found.

[System reboot in progress]

[Preparing new parameters...]

"You're making a mistake," Ved said coldly, his voice echoing in the emptiness. "I don't need your interference. I've always relied on my own strength."

The system didn't answer directly. Instead, a figure materialized before him—a formless silhouette, glowing faintly with shifting light.

[Error: Host resistance detected]

Ved smirked. "Resistance? I'm not resisting. I'm warning you." He stepped closer to the figure, his presence commanding even in this strange realm. "I am Ved Flack. I've survived wars, conquered foes stronger than you can imagine. Whatever this is, I will master it, not the other way around."

The figure pulsed, its glow intensifying.

[System adapting...]

[Integrating Ved Flack's combat data, magical proficiency...]

[System evolution in progress]

Ved felt a sudden rush of power course through him, his body instinctively straightening as his senses sharpened. He clenched his fists, the unfamiliar energy buzzing under his skin.

[System evolution complete]

[Welcome, Ved Flack, to the new System]

"New System?" Ved muttered, his brows furrowing.

The silhouette dissolved, replaced by a glowing interface that hovered before him, its text crisp and sharp.

[A New System Feature Unlocked:]

Soul Domination – Control and assimilate fragments of defeated souls to enhance your own power.

Ved's smirk returned, sharper than before. "Now we're talking."
