Chapter 21 - The Backup Boyfriend of the Girl Next Door (1)
Since nothing significant had happened in the first world, Hai Ku didn’t gain many experience points. However, he did get to experience what it felt like to have a family and a little sister, and it wasn’t a bad feeling.
[Which world would the host like to enter? As long as it’s a world you’ve written a long review for, you can choose at random.]
To make it easier for Hai Ku to choose, the system listed all the long reviews he had written, whether he remembered them or not, displaying each one in sequence.
Although he considered himself to be thick-skinned, looking back at his early comments still made him feel ashamed. Hai Ku randomly clicked on one and said, “This one will do.”

The cozy desk and room made Hai Ku pause for a moment. On the open page of a Five-Year College Entrance Exam book on the desk was a delicate name; Lan Weicai.
This name immediately reminded Hai Ku which book he had entered.
After all, this was the long review he had handwritten. He had written it on a beautiful envelope with over 1,000 words, but because he couldn’t find the author, he never sent it.
That long review was still sitting in his drawer.
This book was the first romance novel he had ever read. He bought it at a newsstand when he was in his first year of high school. He still clearly remembered its title; ‘The Angel Made Me Fall in Love with the Cold Prince.’
Lan Weicai was the female lead in this book, and Hai Ku remembered the character description of this girl; kind, lively, innocent, and cute, a little bit of a fangirl but never fickle, athletic, and a bit thoughtless in her actions.
At the time, Hai Ku, who was in his first year of high school, thought such a girl was quite nice, but after reading the book, he realized the truth was quite different.
This girl wasn’t just fickle, but she did have a backup boyfriend!
And not just any backup boyfriend; one who had loved her for many years.
This book was a very typical Mary Sue school romance, and it even had the cliché where the childhood friend couldn’t compete with the sudden appearance of the “prince.”
The body Hai Ku was occupying now was that of Lan Weicai’s neighbor, named Li Haiku. He had grown up with Lan Weicai and always maintained a warm, gentle image, constantly helping her solve problems.
In fact, he was a typical character with a quiet crush. From kindergarten onwards, he had been in school with Lan Weicai, and he had secretly liked her since then.
However, Li Haiku was a year older than Lan Weicai and was currently in his second year of high school.
If this were a story about a thoughtless girl and her considerate, gentle neighbor falling in love, Hai Ku would have thought it was fairly normal.
But this was unfortunately a Mary Sue story disguised as a school romance.
The male lead in this book, Yan Yufeng, was the sole heir to the Yan family business. Beneath his cold exterior was a warm heart, and he used his aloofness to disguise himself. He was constantly searching for his younger sister, who had been lost by his enemies, though he didn’t know where she had been taken.
Let’s not even talk about why someone with such a background would suddenly transfer to this school, and why, even after transferring, he ended up in a very ordinary high school.
He was at the same school as a girl like the female lead, and yet this younger sister he was searching for was never found until the end.
If they weren’t going to write about the sister, they shouldn’t have mentioned her in the character description!
Lan Weicai was usually quite carefree and often caused trouble at school, and since kindergarten, it had always been Li Haiku who cleaned up after her.
After becoming classmates with Yan Yufeng, the prince-like cold man, of course, Lan Weicai, this fangirl, became completely infatuated with him. She even asked Li Haiku for advice on how to pursue the man.
At that point, Li Haiku didn’t think much of it. After all, everyone had the right to like someone. However, what was a bit too much was that after Lan Weicai said such things, Li Haiku rejected her and confessed his feelings to her.
Of course, Li Haiku was rejected, but this was all part of the plot.
However, the really irritating part was that after Li Haiku was rejected and distanced himself from Lan Weicai, she wouldn’t let go. She felt that she had to help him open his heart, and the two of them had to become friends.
Come on! She had already rejected him, so why did she still want to be friends with him?
But that wasn’t the most irritating part.
The most irritating part was that Li Haiku, in fact, was really moved by Lan Weicai’s innocent, cute, and lively nature! He even helped her pursue Yan Yufeng and occasionally played the third wheel to make Yan Yufeng jealous.
Originally, Li Haiku was a year older than the main leads, but because he had spent so much energy helping the female lead chase the male lead, his previously excellent grades started to drop, and the story ended with him repeating his senior year after the main couple got together. In the end, he went to the same university as the couple…
And then, he continued his third-wheel journey.
When the female lead got upset, cried, he tried to comfort her, also to make the male lead jealous and it only strengthen their relationship. When the main couple had an argument, he had to act as the mediator between them.
Hai Ku: “…”
He truly is the model backup boyfriend!
Even now, when Hai Ku thought back on it, he wanted to award this Li Haiku the Best Backup Boyfriend Award.
And he was still just a high school student. He should have been focusing on strengthening the core socialist values of wealth, strength, democracy, civility, harmony, freedom, equality, justice, and the rule of law. The main goal should have been to study hard and improve every day, not to be caught up in a romance.
Early relationships were wrong.

Sighing, Hai Ku crossed out the name Lan Weicai on the page of the Five-Year College Entrance Exam, Three-Year Simulation book.
The main task in this world was to study hard, refuse to help Lan Weicai pursue a boyfriend, and focus entirely on his studies, aiming to get into a good university.
As for what fate Lan Weicai would have, that was up to her.
Hai Ku quickly got into the right mindset and started solving the practice questions. He was thankful that the original owner had been a top student; Otherwise, he would have had no interest in doing homework.
Originally, high school students were supposed to board at the school, but for the sake of romance and the development of various plot points, the author had made all three of them day students. So, tomorrow morning, Hai Ku would have to ride his bike and take Lan Weicai to school.
The male lead, on the other hand, had a house across from the school…
Looking at the time, it was only a little past 8 in the evening. Li Haiku’s parents were still in the living room watching TV. Now that he had decided on his goal, Hai Ku didn’t want to waste too much time in this world.
It was the second semester of his second year in high school, and there were two weeks left before school started. If everything went smoothly, he would only need a year and a half to finish this mission.
Putting down his pen, Hai Ku opened the door and walked into the living room.
“Dad, Mom, I want to discuss something with you.” He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and stood up straight.
“What is it?”
“The second year of high school is pretty tough, and it’s already the second semester, so I want to stay at the school. I want to get into a good university,” Hai Ku said with a shy smile, fitting the image of a high school student.
After discussing with his parents, Hai Ku returned to his room.
He wouldn’t confess to Lan Weicai; he would focus all his energy on studying. However, as one of the main characters, Hai Ku wasn’t sure whether changing the plot would affect the original story in other ways.
Time passed, and Hai Ku wasn’t in a hurry.
2 weeks quickly flew by.
The boarding arrangements were all settled, and he had moved his things into the school ahead of time. Hai Ku felt both physically and mentally at ease.
“By the way, you need to tell Weicai in advance. Normally, you’re the one who takes her to school, but now that you’re staying at school, remember to let her know before you head to school later,” his mom reminded him.
“Mm,” Hai Ku nodded and took a sip of soup. “No rush, I’ll go to school in the afternoon. I’ll talk to her after I finish eating.”
Lan Weicai lived next door. When they were young, Hai Ku often visited her house, but now that they were older, it had become a bit awkward. So, aside from waking her up for school in the mornings, Hai Ku rarely went inside.
He organized his words in his mind, still unsure what the female lead’s gold finger was in this world, feeling a little nervous.
But after thinking about it, it was just a Mary Sue school story. Even if the female lead had a special ability, it probably wouldn’t be anything too powerful.
With that thought, Hai Ku felt more at ease. After finishing his meal, he went to knock on the door next door.

“What!!! You’re staying at school?” Lan Weicai’s big eyes widened in disbelief. “Li Haiku! You promised you’d always take me to school. How can you suddenly stay at school now?”
Pouting, Lan Weicai looked unhappy, her little tantrum making her look soft and cute.
Hai Ku felt like he was dealing with a child. Hearing Lan Weicai say those words, he wasn’t angry at all; instead, he felt like he had broken his promise.
Biting his tongue, Hai Ku called out to the inside, “Uncle, Aunt, I’m moving to school tonight. I won’t be able to drive Weicai to school tomorrow.”
“It’s fine, we’ll take her. Hai Ku, you need to focus on studying at school,” his parents responded.
“Okay!” After speaking, Hai Ku looked at Lan Weicai. He didn’t answer her earlier question but spoke seriously, “Weicai, even though you’re only in your first year of high school, you still need to focus on your studies.”
“But tomorrow’s my birthday! Did you forget?” Lan Weicai seemed upset, a little taken aback by the sudden change. In the past, Hai Ku had always spent her birthday with her, so it was hard for her to adjust.
“I’ve already prepared your birthday present,” Hai Ku said, understanding her feelings. She was just a first-year high school girl, and her good older brother suddenly staying at school was a big change for her. “Tomorrow at noon, when you come back, my mom will give you the gift. There’s also a letter inside, with the words I want to say to you.”
Hai Ku spoke to her in a tone like an elder. He sighed, feeling that reliving high school life was actually quite tiring. If it weren’t for the fact that the original owner was a dedicated student, Hai Ku felt like he wouldn’t have been able to keep up.
