Chapter 17: Chapter 17: A Quiet Routine
The first rays of sunlight filtered through the windows of the Emiya household, casting a warm glow on the wooden floors. Shirou stood in the kitchen, the faint sizzle of eggs and the aroma of grilled fish filling the air.
He glanced over his shoulder as the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall.
"Morning, Shirou!" Taiga Fujimura greeted with her usual energy, her voice carrying before she even entered the room. "What's for breakfast?"
"Same as always" Shirou said, plating the food. "Fish, rice, and miso soup."
Taiga dropped into her usual seat at the table, her eyes lighting up as she caught sight of the spread. "You're the best, Shirou! I don't know what I'd do without you."
Shirou offered a faint smile, setting the plates down in front of her. "You'd probably survive. Barely."
As Taiga dug into her food, Sakura Matou entered the kitchen, her steps quiet and measured. She carried a faint air of hesitation, her gaze flickering briefly to Shirou before settling on Taiga.
"Good morning, Fujimura-sensei," Sakura said politely, bowing slightly.
"Morning, Sakura!" Taiga said, her mouth full. "Don't be shy—dig in before it gets cold!"
Sakura nodded, taking her seat across from Taiga. She glanced at Shirou again, her expression softening. "Good morning, Senpai. Thank you for the meal."
Shirou waved off her thanks, busying himself with cleaning up the kitchen. "It's nothing. Eat up before Taiga steals your share."
Taiga gasped, holding her chopsticks dramatically. "I would never! ... Okay, maybe I would, but that's beside the point."
The morning passed in quiet routine, filled with the sound of clinking dishes and lighthearted conversation. But as Shirou left the house for school, a faint chill lingered in the air in coldness that felt out of place in the mild autumn morning.
He paused on the front steps, glancing back at the house. The feeling passed quickly, leaving only a faint unease in its wake. Shaking his head, Shirou pushed the thought aside and headed to school.
At Homurahara Academy, the day unfolded as usual. Shirou's classmates greeted him warmly, though he struggled to connect with their easy banter. Despite his helpful nature, he often found himself on the periphery of the group, an observer rather than a participant.
In the distance, Rin Tohsaka walked the halls with her usual grace and confidence. She passed by Shirou without so much as a glance, her presence commanding attention even in silence.
Shirou watched her for a moment, then turned away, his mind drifting back to the faint unease he'd felt that morning.
