Chapter 4: Chapter 4 She Wants to See Me One Last Time
Ye Wanwan was buried three days later, and after the funeral, Shen Yi returned home with Shen Wenzhou, both of them sitting on the living room sofa with expressionless faces.
After a long while, Shen Yi suddenly called the servant over and asked in a hoarse voice, "Did she say anything before she left?"
The servant looked troubled but still shook his head honestly.
Ye Wanwan's departure was very sudden; nobody knew that in her last moment of life, there was nobody by her side, and she left this world silently and alone.
Shen Yi suddenly felt a wrenching pain in his heart; he couldn't imagine death, let alone what Ye Wanwan felt in the face of death.
Was she scared? Or did she feel finally relieved?
Shen Yi didn't understand; they clearly shouldn't have ended up like this. Why had they become what they were now?
However, this question had become meaningless; Ye Wanwan was no longer here, his wife had passed away.
Shen Wenzhou, sitting beside him, had kept his head lowered, silently shedding tears. By the time Shen Yi heard the sound and came back to his senses, Shen Wenzhou was already sobbing uncontrollably.
"Zhouzhou," Shen Yi called out with difficulty.
Shen Wenzhou lifted his head to look at his father, his vision blurred by tears. After a long moment, Shen Wenzhou managed to choke out the words, "I'm sorry."
Shen Yi was somewhat bewildered, not sure why he would say such a thing, but he soon learned the answer from Shen Wenzhou's lips.
Shen Wenzhou said with great sorrow, "That night she called me; she wanted me to come home. She wanted to see me one last time, but I refused her."
"I told her the rain was too heavy, that I wasn't coming home."
"In truth, I just didn't want to go back."
"I hated that she always demanded and restricted me under the guise of doing what was best for me. Whenever I wanted to resist, she'd become hysterical, like a lunatic; I didn't want to face someone who had lost all reason."
"But, but I didn't even get to see her for the last time."
"The last thing she said to me was to take good care of myself."
"She must have been very, very upset then."
"Even her last wish to see me was denied."
Shen Wenzhou tried hard to control his tears, but they were beyond his control; he had refused that woman her last request to see him one more time.
At this moment, he didn't even dare to call her "Mom." He felt he didn't deserve to be her son.
Only then did Shen Yi realize that Ye Wanwan had called both him and Shen Wenzhou that night. Perhaps at that time, Ye Wanwan had already sensed something; she was saying goodbye to him.
And in that phone call, Ye Wanwan said she regretted it, she said she regretted it!
In the end, in their marriage, Ye Wanwan said she regretted it.
Shen Yi's heartache intensified; their marriage had indeed been a business arrangement, but initially, Ye Wanwan had loved him, and although he may not have felt love for Ye Wanwan at the beginning, he never thought of separation or betrayal.
He believed they would, like many others, spend a life together without dramatic passion or love, but still supporting each other.
When did the three of them start to feel resentment towards one another, to face each other with no love in their hearts, only exhaustion?
Was it since Ye Wanwan began her numerous suspicions of him? Was it since Ye Wanwan went to his company and fought with his female secretary? Or was it since he got angry and deliberately forgot their anniversary?
Or was it some other time…
Shen Yi didn't know, and he didn't want to know anymore.
Ye Wanwan was gone.
He had lost his wife, and Shen Wenzhou had lost his mother.
