Chapter 13: Competitive Exam
After the introduction finished, Professor Isaac started talking again. Before starting with the first subject, there was something he had to make clear first.
"As you all know, this class will compete with two other classes this and next year. The test scores from the entrance exam were used to determine in which class each student starts out. You are class 3, and therefore below class 1 and 2. The rankings can change throughout the year and the class that ends up being number one gets certain privileges that will be disclosed when you reach it. Now, moving on…"
He started teaching about the elements of magic. Yamato however got hung up on something.
"Class 3… Maybe we should have attended the entrence exam after all… but how could it be that we don't end up in class 1 after winning against the headmaster of the school? Maybe he is a sore loser… though he didn't strike me as the type. Maybe I should examine class 1 first to get a picture… I wanted to lay low at first, but I need to know if said privileges are worth striving for or not. I suppose I will have to crush class 1 either way…"
While Yamato wondered about the privileges, Yuki got hung up over something completely else.
"…class 3… ha… haha… is that a joke… I… and Master aren't in the best class…? Who does this worthless headmaster think he is?! First I hear I can't share a room with master, then I have to carry some stupid boxes around the campus, they even dare to ask master to also carry them! Then I meet this bitch, lowlife whore that can't even show an ounce of respect towards master, and on top of all that this?! Though… maybe that is due to our unusual way of qualifying for the school… it was too good to be true anyway… Well, it doesn't really matter now anyway… Maybe master doesn't even want to get to class 1. If he does, I'll help him of course… but if he doesn't, that's okay too. I'll just focus on internal things then… like Elara… Bitch… also Arina… she keeps glancing in my and masters direction… could it be… is she in love with him and see's me as her rival?!?! Oh, well... I can't blame her. She has a keen eye, and good taste too. Though, I will have to take care of that after school. But maybe I'm just imagining things…"
Their first lesson went relatively uneventful after that. When they finished, Arina walked towards Yamato and Yuki, who were just about to leave.
"Excuse me, but I need to talk to you two. Would you mind coming with me for a moment?"
Though Yuki wanted to decline at first, Yamato already accepted her request and so they went behind the building to talk whatever Arina wanted to talk about.
"So, what do you want from us?"
"I'm sorry to trouble you with this… but I just have to ask if you know about a small village that… well, is no longer. I heard that you two where near by when it happened, and I wanted to ask if you saw anything."
"Small village that is no longer…? Does she mean the place we destroyed when we landed in this world? This seems important to her. If I'd have to guess, she probably lost family or friends because of that… How did she even track us down? This could be a problem… But she doesn't seem hostile. I suppose that explains her gazes from earlier. Of course I can't tell her the truth, but completely denying it would be suspicious too. If she already found us here, she has to at least know something about our involvement… Of course, Satomi. She and Ken where the only ones that knew of ohr presence at the scene. If the only information she has comes from Satomi… than we should be nothing but bystanders to the scene to her."
"Ah, yes, truly tragic what happened there. But I'm afraid we didn't see anything. We just happened to pass through at the time. I'm sorry we can't be of any help. Why did you ask us anyway?"
"Ah… Well a friend told me about you and where you might be headed… But it's okay. I didn't expect to learn anything about it anyway… But I thought I might as well give it a shot. I have no further questions. See you around then…"
She was obviously disappointed, but she didn't seem like she would dig deeper into them. When Arina left, Yamato and Yuki where left alone.
"Master, let's go back to our dorms too now!"
"Sure…"
Yamato seemed lost in thought. When he arrived at his dorm, he expected Yuki to come too and continue being in his room for no reason. But to his surprise,it seems she went to her own dorm. Not that he would mind. He had to think about their next steps now, so she would just be in the way of his thoughts anyway. Though, it wasn't like her to not cling to him every second she had the opportunity to. Maybe he was just used to her doing that and it felt weird for it not to be like that for once.
Yamato lied down on his bed. It wasn't that late, but he also didn't feel like doing anything in particular. Time went by and Yamato eventually fell asleep while thinking. When he woke up, the sun was just about to rise. He had another dream. This time, it was just him. Standing in the air, looking down at the school. Yuki wasn't there. The woman from the last dream wasn't either. Everything around the school was blurry and dark. It probably meant nothing. When he opened his eyes, to no surprise, Yuki sat on his bed and was only inches away from his face with her own.
"Morning, Master~! Isn't it a little early to wake up?"
"I went to sleep early yesterday… Why are you already up anyway?"
"Well, I just got here!"
"Lie…"
"It's true!"
"Sure it is…"
He started to get dressed and ready for school.
"Whatever, I won't go back to sleep now. Might as well just go to school early."
"Whaaat~? That's so lame tho~"
"Fine, stay here then."
"Hey, don't leave me here!"
Yamato was already at the door, and Yuki quickly followed.
"Ah, is it because you don't want anyone see us coming out of your room in the morning~?
"That is one reason. You should stop coming to my room unannounced all together."
"Never!"
"…At least don't get caught then."
"I won't!"
Exiting the boys dorms, they went on their way to the classroom. Unexpectedly, they saw a second year student also come out of the dorms. He didn't seem to notice the two, but why was he going out so early, Yamato wondered. However it didn't seem to matter, so they just ignored it.
Arriving at their classroom, they were surprised yet again, as they saw Arina already present at her seat reading a book.
"Oh, aren't you two a bit too early?"
"We just happened to wake up early. What about you?"
"Just happened to both wake up at around the same time and come to school early, huh…"
She gave them a suspicious look but chose to mind her own businesses.
"Well, I came early to study. Class 3 is unacceptable, and it shows how we need to get stronger to become class 1."
"Aha… Well, don't mind us then."
"What are you talking about? You two will obviously study with me now that you are also here. You also need to get stronger, it seems. Since you are in the same position as I am."
"…Sure, we didn't have anything to do anyway."
And so they studied for half an hour about magic theory. It wasn't long after that Prof. Isaac came into the class, surprised by them studying already. Though he didn't make a comment on it besides greeting them. Soon the other students cane in and started getting seated. Yamato and Yuki moved back to where they originally sat, since they went next to Arina for the sake of studying together.
Once everyone was seated Prof. Isaac started talking.
"Good morning, everyone. Today I will tell you about the first Competitive Exam that will be held in two weeks from now. I know it's soon but it will give you the opportunity to get used to this new environment and its rules. The first Competitive Exam will consist of each class going on an class trip together, in which you will have to complete tasks in order to gain points. The class with the most points will win the Competitive Exam. There are no benefits being second place instead of third. There is only the class that wins, and the two that lose. How that will affect your class to rank up will be disclosed at the exam. Any questions?"
Arina raised her hand.
"Yes, Arina?"
"Don't you think it's unfair to only value the winner and not every participant? What I mean is that this is a bit…"
"I know where you're getting at. I think it's important that you learn that not every time just attending is enough. The rules were designed to teach you the difference between succeeding, almost succeeding and not succeeding. The key message here is that almost succeeding is closer to not succeeding than it is to succeeding, no matter how close the actual difference between the winner and second place actually was. If that was all, we will start with preparing for the competition today."
He began explaining about the environment they would face and generally possible tasks. Yamato found this exchange more interesting than the preparations though.
"What an interesting philosophy… I see why Arina doesn't like it though. She seems like the type that wants everyone to be treated equally, regardless of their contribution to a goal, everyone is the same. A democratic mindset, while the school seems to be built like a meritocracy. A fundamental clash in ideology and politics. I personally think it is more efficient to have a meritocratic system. But humans are social beings. If it's just about wellbeing and surviving together, a democracy or similar is more fitting. Systems like school however don't aim for your general wellbeing. Their goal is to increase your abilities and motivate you to become a efficient worker for society. Which is why a meritocracy makes more sense here, despite humans social beliefs. It tells a lot that Arina does not like the idea of it regardless of its usefulness. She seems to be a genuinely good person. How interesting…"
