Chapter 83: Monstrosity
"What the hell is wrong with you? You can't just force someone into something like this. I don't even know you."
Cleopatra frowned at his words, and she almost seemed to be reconsidering her actions before her face became solemn and she released a small sigh. She spoke slowly while releasing Azrael's hand and taking a step back to give him some space.
"Okay, maybe I shouldn't have hurt you. I'm sorry."
Cleopatra tried to reach for the hand she had twisted to see if he was okay, but Azrael shrugged her off roughly and stepped away with a scowl. Cleopatra smiled.
"I'm really sorry about that. But I think you should reconsider your answer. There are many benefits to be gained from being with me. You see, my father was someone just like you. A demigod with no God Aspect. He is one of the reasons why I find you so fascinating.
"For the sake of our new relationship, I'll tell you a secret. Even without a God Aspect, there are other ways for demigods to become stronger. Do you want to know how?"
Azrael eyed Cleopatra with no small amount of mistrust.
But he couldn't help but be curious about what she was talking about, and so he asked:
"How?"
Cleopatra smiled mischievously, and Azrael suddenly felt like a rat being played around with by a mischievous cat.
Azrael closed his eyes and released a breath to calm himself before speaking.
"Look, I appreciate the fact that you feel that way. But you already know I have a girlfriend, so—"
Cleopatra's scoff cut Azrael off before he could continue with his cover story.
"That childish relationship of yours was doomed to fail right from the start. Do you think that it will last? A relationship between two children of darkness? It is nothing but a desperate attempt to make your high school life more colorful. A farce. I suggest you end it now before things get even more complicated for both of you. The world has never been kind to children of the gods of darkness, and your actions will only make it worse."
Azrael narrowed his eyes in irritation, and Cleopatra stepped closer to him with a coy grin. She put her hand against his chin, and Azrael drew back harshly while glaring at her.
Cleopatra grabbed him by the tie and pulled him closer forcefully so that their chests were pressed together before she spoke.
"I am not a patient woman, Azrael. What I'm giving you here is the opportunity of a lifetime. With you as my husband, you'll gain the support of all the Larksons in this world. There's nothing you will lack. You might not have the ability to use a God Aspect, but I can assure you, that you are not going to be weak. All you have to do is say yes to me."
Ka-cha!
The sound of the door handle turning drew Cleopatra's attention, and she gently let go of Azrael's tie as someone entered the room.
The boy who left earlier stared at his fellow students in utter confusion. He glanced from Cleopatra's flushed face towards Azrael's rumpled clothes and his eyes narrowed.
The boy considered how close the two students were standing and their harsh breathing, and he couldn't help but have many thoughts that ran through his head. Each one of them was more damning than the last.
What had they been doing in this room?
"What are you doing to Miss Cleopatra?"
The boy frowned at Azrael angrily as he tightened his hand into a fist. In his other hand, he held a tray, which contained Cleopatra's breakfast.
Cleopatra put her hand on Azrael's shoulder to stop him from answering. She then spoke up to the boy.
"Put the tray down there, George. You can leave, thank you."
George looked at Cleopatra in surprise. She was sending him out?
Why was she siding with that filthy dark child instead of him?
Cleopatra gave George a hard look when he just stayed in one place without moving, and George finally relented and put the tray down on the table.
The bell to signify the start of class rang through the school, and Cleopatra sighed tiredly as Azrael turned and began to leave the room.
Cleopatra spoke up.
"I'm sorry for keeping you for so long. If you'd like, you could join me for breakfast. I can get you a pass for the first class."
Azrael spoke up without turning to regard Cleopatra.
"Thank you, but no."
Azrael slammed the door behind him angrily, and Cleopatra smiled at his actions. He was as fiery as ever.
Once Azrael was gone, George asked Cleopatra if there was any problem between the two of them.
"The children of darkness are always causing issues in the school, so I'm really not surprised. I remember having a child of Loki in my class once, and he nearly killed some of his classmates because of a small prank—"
"George, please leave me."
Cleopatra was not interested in hearing what George had to say, and George sensed the irritation in her tone when she spoke.
George knew better than to push the student council president when she was like this, so he gave a small bow and left.
…
For the rest of class that day, Azrael was in a bad mood.
Azrael had no idea what Cleopatra could possibly be trying to play at. What was she trying to gain by courting him?
There was no way Azrael would accept that she simply liked him.
That was foolish to even think about.
Azrael and Cleopatra hadn't spoken more than ten long sentences to each other in the past, so why would she suddenly like him?
No, there had to be some reason behind all this. She had an ulterior motive, Azrael was sure of it.
But what was it?
Azrael halfheartedly listened to Scar taking attendance while massaging his throbbing left hand.
Cleopatra's grip was like a vice.
Azrael knew that he was strong. He could probably break rocks in his palm and turn then to dust easily.
But what Cleopatra had done went beyond mere strength. It was monstrosity.
When Cleopatra grabbed him, Azrael had never felt more powerless in his life. It was like he was an ant being held down by a mountain, and a single move would make it crush him.
Was this the power of an S-rank demigod? It was terrifying how much of a difference there was in this power. C Rank was only three ranks below S, and yet, the gap in their strength felt like the space between heaven and earth.
Azrael hated this feeling.
The way he was so powerless to do anything against her and how she could have easily made him do whatever she wanted because of how much stronger she was.
It made his ego flare up in retaliation, and if not for the fact that he knew he would be easily beaten, Azrael would have fought her right then.
Azrael needed to get stronger.
If he didn't get stronger, then these monstrous people around him were going to continue walking over him, and there was nothing he would be able to do about it.
With enough power, you can do whatever you want, and those beneath you would have to accept it regardless of how it would affect them.
That was the cruel reality of this world.
