Chapter 11: Thanatos
Azrael's fight-or-flight instinct immediately kicked in, and at that moment, adrenaline rushed through his body like a river! Azrael pushed Francis back and bucked his hips hard enough to force Francis to get off him! Azrael had just gotten back from the gym, so all his muscles were wound tight! This allowed him to exert a lot more force than usual.
He wasted no time as he grabbed Francis around the waist and reversed their position so that he was on top!
Slam!
All of this happened in less than a second, and Francis was too stunned by the speed to do anything about it! Azrael raised his hand with a mad shout, and a blow slammed into Francis's nose!
SLAM!
SLAM!
SLAM!
Francis barely got his hand up to protect his face as Azrael went crazy and unleashed a relentless barrage! Azrael was screaming and shouting like a madman while unleashing blow after blow, and Francis was too stunned by the intensity to push Azrael off him.
Azrael was more than prepared to end Francis right there! This bastard thought the world revolved around him!
"Just because you got an A-rank doesn't mean you have the right to attack others, you fucking piece of shit!"
Azrael roared and raised his hand for another devastating blow, but he felt something hit hard on the back of his head!
BAM!
Azrael felt his skull rattle from the impact as his entire body froze in place. He immediately lost all the strength in his body and fell to the side. Behind him, one of Francis's lackeys threw a bloody metal bat away while panting heavily. A blow that hard would have killed a normal human, but Azrael was a demigod, so he only suffered a massive cut and a concussion.
Francis scrambled to his feet with a roar and immediately slammed his feet into Azrael's stomach! He continued to kick Azrael in anger for a few seconds before one of the lackeys pulled him away while screaming that Azrael might be dead. Azrael was no longer fighting back, and they hadn't seen his chest move in a while.
"Let's get out of here! Come on!"
The lackey pulled Francis away, and after a final scowl at Azrael's bleeding body, they all turned and ran, disappearing into the shadows of the alley.
_____
Contrary to what they had thought, Azrael wasn't dead.
But the intense blow to his head had left him unconscious for a long time. Hours passed, and by the time it was ten, Azrael still hadn't woken up. The blood pooling under his head had slowed, and his higher constitution as a demigod allowed the injury to begin healing slowly even as he lay there, but Azrael was only sixteen years old, and he had just gotten back from working out, so his body was too tired to recover quickly.
"How long are you going to keep me waiting, boy?"
Azrael blinked in confusion and opened his eyes. He was standing in the middle of a vast, dark plane. For as far as the eye could see, everything in front of Azrael was covered in a dark veil that he couldn't see through. He looked down and was surprised to see that he was floating. There was a crushing weight in the air that was pressing down on him like someone had suddenly dialed up the force of gravity to twice what it should be, but Azrael didn't find it too difficult to stand since he was very fit.
Where the hell am I?
"That isn't important, is it? I decided to meet with you, and you should be truly grateful for this honor. It is not often that a mortal is deemed worthy of gazing upon a god."
Azrael quickly turned around when he heard a voice behind him, and his eyes widened as he saw two giant yellow eyes glaring at him from within the darkness. They loomed high up in the sky, so Azrael could only imagine how large the creature they belonged to was!
Azrael stumbled a few steps and almost fell back in shock, and the eyes tilted to the side with a hum before the voice from before spoke again.
"Yes, I rather like the look in your eyes. Your fear is understandable. Perhaps I should have taken a more agreeable form."
The darkness shifted, and from it walked out a man clad in a black suit. The man had a devilishly handsome face and short black hair complementing his piercing yellow eyes. But when the man smiled, Azrael caught the glimpse of a forked tongue peeking through his teeth.
"Is this better?"
"What are you?"
The man frowned for a moment as Azrael asked this question before he gave a nonchalant shrug. The man knew that Azrael was completely disoriented by the sudden transportation, so he understood his confusion.
"I am your Celestial Guardian, and you are in my God Domain. Well, you are in the lowest level of my God Domain. Anything more than this and the weight of the Divine Essence would kill you."
"My Celestial Guardian?"
Azrael's eyes narrowed into a curious stare as this thought passed his mind, and it wasn't long before he took another step back once he realized who he was standing in front of! It was Thanatos!
"You're a god."
Thanatos grinned, a devilish glint in his eyes and waved a hand around like what Azrael said wasn't truly important.
"Yes, I am a god. There really isn't a need to be surprised about it. But enough about me. I am more interested in you. You're quite the unlucky one, aren't you, child? Born to alcoholic parents who abandoned you on the side of the street immediately after finding out that you were not worth being sold on the black market. Unfortunate enough to not have received any Aspect and possess enemies who are willing to leave you bleeding out on the street. I would say you have the devil's luck, but that would be an insult to the devil."
Azrael felt anger filling him as Thanatos started listing out all of the things that were going and had gone wrong for Azrael! Who the fuck did he think was at fault for this!?
"You're the one that didn't give me an Aspect, and you're the reason my parents left me! If not for you, I would've been the best. But instead, you cursed me with your rejection."
Thanatos's smile turned into a bloodthirsty sneer.
"I have no control over who is worthy to receive a gift from me, boy. If you try to pin your mediocrity on me, then I'll eat you."
Azrael blinked in shock before taking another step back. Eat him?
Thanatos didn't seem like he was joking, and he just sighed as he started to float around the dark space calmly.
Thanatos was not used to being in his human form, so he didn't even feel like walking. He would rather get done with this quickly and return to his original form.
"But although you were born with the lowest kind of luck possible, it seems that the strings of fate have converged and granted you something beyond even your wildest imagination. You possess an EX Rank Divine Potential. Something that only the gods should have, and that potential is what has drawn me to you today. Boy, I have come to grant you an opportunity."
Azrael felt his heart rate quicken up upon hearing this. He was extremely cautious once he heard Thanatos say that he would eat him, but the promise of power was far greater than whatever fear Azrael had been feeling. It didn't matter how terrified he was. If this was an opportunity for him to become strong, then he would not let it slip past him.
Thanatos saw the hunger in Azrael's eyes and smiled. A stopped floating and faced Azrael.
An eager person was always the easiest to convince, after all.
