Chapter 56: Searching for the Missing Nemesis
The group exchanged glances, and no one raised any objections.
"Dr. Ashford, don't worry. We will help you rescue your daughter."
Chang Wei patted Dr. Ashford on the shoulder, simultaneously extracting a small portion of his brain cells. He only needed the memories from Dr. Ashford, not his genetic points or genome.
Dr. Ashford hesitated for a moment before revealing that he had also hired two mercenaries.
However, Jill and her team had already made up their minds, and this revelation wouldn't change their decision. Besides, they had a superhuman and a priest on their side. Mercenaries hardly seemed necessary.
Before long, following Dr. Ashford's directions, the group found a large bus-like school vehicle and set off.
Chang Wei had always thought highly of American school buses, believing them to be impressively sturdy. It was said that in collisions between vehicles and school buses, the school bus often emerged unscathed, while the other vehicle sustained severe damage, such as a caved-in front end.
Jill confirmed his assumptions.
"Ordinary school buses, or those used in free education systems, don't have that level of protection. Fortunately, Raccoon City's schools are all privately run by the Umbrella Corporation. The quality of their school buses is said to be so high they can even withstand rocket launchers."
That sounded exaggerated. Anti-tank materials of such a caliber would never realistically be used in school bus construction.
The bus quickly arrived at the school. Everyone disembarked, though the female reporter, Terri, wanted to join them for some thrilling footage. However, knowing she was fated to die here in the original plot, Chang Wei naturally forbade her from coming along.
Dr. Ashford, realizing he would only be a burden, stayed behind on the bus, anxiously awaiting their return.
"Doctor, can you access the school's public announcement system?"
Suddenly, an idea came to Chang Wei, and he turned to Dr. Ashford.
"... If it's connected to the internet rather than a local area network," Dr. Ashford replied, somewhat confused but answering based on his expertise.
Who knew why a virologist and genetic engineer like him would also have hacking skills?
"In that case, perhaps we don't need to take unnecessary risks," Chang Wei said with a smile.
Thanks to the school being part of the Umbrella Corporation, it was likely connected to the internet instead of a closed local network. The company probably kept it online to upload experimental data, possibly even involving the students.
Dr. Ashford successfully hacked the system and easily gained control of the announcement system.
"Angela, it's Daddy! Come to the back door of the school. We'll be waiting for you here!"
Dr. Ashford's voice, filled with emotion, boomed through the speakers. The loud broadcast attracted zombies and zombie dogs, all converging toward the source of the noise.
Not long after, the group saw a little girl emerge from the back door.
"Dad!"
Angela ran straight into Dr. Ashford's arms, and the father and daughter embraced.
"Who's there?"
Alice suddenly raised her rifle, aiming into the darkness.
"Don't shoot! We're on your side!"
Two mercenaries in Umbrella Corporation uniforms stepped out of the shadows.
They had just arrived, only to hear the broadcast. Realizing it might be their new employer, and wanting to avoid being obliterated by a nuclear strike, they hurried over.
"Let them come," Dr. Ashford said after hesitating for a moment.
"Doctor, can you now reveal the helicopter's landing location?" Chang Wei asked him.
"Thank you all. The location is..."
Dr. Ashford, wary of Carlos and Nikolai, gestured for Jill to come closer and whispered the location into her ear.
Meanwhile, Chang Wei scrutinized Nikolai. In the game, he was a hated antagonist, but the movie had reimagined him as a self-sacrificing hero, misleading any game-unfamiliar traveler. Trusting the movie's version of events and encountering game Nikolai would undoubtedly result in betrayal.
Nikolai, noticing Chang Wei's gaze, offered him a friendly smile.
Chang Wei nodded slightly, contemplating the current whereabouts of Nemesis. By now, the Umbrella personnel were likely all dead, and the T-virus Hunters were under his control, heading to the Hive's underground facility. Their goal? To break in and give the Umbrella Corporation executives a nasty surprise.
Without anyone controlling Nemesis, it was probably in a dormant state. Based on Umbrella's programming, it wouldn't attack without specific commands. Furthermore, being a T-virus creation, zombies and Lickers wouldn't target it either.
Lickers needed food, sure, but they weren't foolish enough to provoke Nemesis when easier prey like zombies was available.
"Let's get moving. We don't have much time," Jill urged after learning the helicopter's landing site was at City Hall.
Dr. Ashford understood the urgency. Moments earlier, he had been overwhelmed with emotion, fearing for his daughter's safety. Finally reuniting with her had brought uncontrollable relief.
"Be cautious. Umbrella has stationed many personnel and snipers there," Chang Wei warned, recalling this detail from his absorbed memories.
Thanks to his memory absorption of a top-tier race car driver and school bus operator, Chang Wei floored the accelerator. Time was of the essence, after all.
Creak, creak, creak!
