Starlit Collision: When Worlds Converge

Chapter 6: Counter Moves

The Blackwood Foundation Charity Gala transformed the Boston Museum of Fine Arts into a glittering showcase of wealth and influence. Ethan adjusted his bow tie as the limousine pulled up to the entrance, acutely aware of Lily beside him in a midnight blue gown that managed to be both elegant and understated.

"You look beautiful," he said, not for the first time that evening.

Lily smiled, the reserved smile that never quite reached her eyes. "You clean up well yourself."

As they ascended the grand staircase, Ethan's gaze swept the perimeter. Four of his father's security personnel were already in position, dressed as staff and guests. Ramirez had delivered as promised.

"Nervous?" Lily asked, noticing his surveillance.

"Just making sure we won't be bored." He placed his hand lightly on the small of her back, guiding her through the entrance. "These events can be tedious without the right company."

The grand hall buzzed with Boston's elite—old money mingling with tech entrepreneurs, politicians with celebrities. Through it all, Ethan maintained a keen awareness of their surroundings, noting with satisfaction that Lily's own security detail had blended seamlessly with the crowd. Like recognized in their world.

"Ethan Reyes," drawled a familiar voice. "What an unexpected pleasure."

Julian Mercer approached, champagne flute in hand. Ethan felt Lily tense beside him.

"Mr. Mercer," Ethan nodded coolly. "I wasn't aware you supported children's education."

"I have varied interests." Mercer's gaze slid to Lily. "Won't you introduce me to your lovely companion?"

"Lily Wang, Julian Mercer. Julian works in international finance."

"Charmed," Mercer took her hand. "Miss Wang, your name has come up in certain circles. I believe we share mutual connections in Shanghai."

"I doubt that," Lily replied smoothly. "My family keeps to themselves."

Mercer's smile tightened. "Perhaps I'm mistaken. If you'll excuse me, I see someone I must greet."

As Mercer retreated, Ethan guided Lily toward the bar. "Sorry about that. Business associate of my father's. Not someone I would have invited."

"You didn't tell me you'd been approached again," Lily said quietly.

"I handled it." Ethan ordered two mineral waters. "Dance with me?"

On the dance floor, he held her closer than strictly necessary. "Mercer won't be a problem after tonight," he murmured near her ear.

Lily pulled back slightly to study his face. "What do you mean?"

Before he could answer, his phone vibrated. A text from Ramirez: "Package delivered. Client distracted. Green light."

"Excuse me for two minutes?" Ethan asked. "I need to send a quick message."

In a quiet corridor, Ethan called Ramirez. "Status?"

"Krane's records are now in FBI hands—money laundering, human trafficking, the Macau operation. We made it look like an internal betrayal from Mercer's division. Krane's people are already beginning to distance themselves."

"And the campus surveillance?"

"Dismantled. We replaced their team with our people. As far as they'll know, their operation was compromised by federal authorities. The Feng girl is being recalled—we leaked 'suspicions' she was getting too close to law enforcement."

"Excellent. Keep me updated."

Ethan returned to find Lily in conversation with a silver-haired dowager. She excused herself gracefully when she saw him.

"Everything alright?" she asked.

"Better than alright. Would you like some air? The garden terrace is supposed to be spectacular."

Under the stars, surrounded by artfully illuminated topiaries, Ethan decided to take a calculated risk.

"Those people who were asking about you—they won't be a problem anymore."

Lily's eyes narrowed. "What did you do?"

"Let's just say I discovered Mr. Krane has been involved in activities that interest federal authorities. Anonymous tips were made. His organization is currently... distracted."

"You didn't tell them anything about me?"

Ethan met her gaze steadily. "I told them Lily Wang is exactly who she says she is—a brilliant economics student with no connection to whatever conspiracy theories they've concocted."

Something shifted in her expression—a subtle softening, a flash of genuine warmth.

"Why would you do that? You barely know me."

"I know enough." He stepped closer. "I know you're extraordinary, regardless of your last name or family connections."

For several heartbeats, they stood in silence, the air between them charged with unspoken truths.

"Thank you," she finally said, with a sincerity he'd never heard from her before.

"Dance with me again?" he asked.

As they returned to the ballroom, Ethan spotted Mercer by the exit, face ashen as he spoke urgently into his phone. Their eyes met briefly across the room. Mercer's expression hardened before he turned and disappeared into the night.

Hours later, after he'd escorted Lily back to her dormitory, Ethan's phone buzzed with a final update from Ramirez:

"Krane in custody. Mercer fled. Faye Feng withdrew from Harvard effective immediately. All surveillance photos of the target were recovered and destroyed."

Ethan smiled as he typed his response: "Good work. Send my father the bill."

Loosening his bow tie, Ethan allowed himself a moment of satisfaction. The night had gone perfectly according to plan. The Laughing Vipers were neutralized, and more importantly, Lily's defenses were finally beginning to crack.

This wasn't just about protecting her—though that part had stirred something unexpected in him. This was strategic. If she was indeed Feng Yixin, earning her trust now would position him perfectly for the future alliance he sought. His father would be impressed by his foresight and initiative.

Still, Ethan couldn't ignore the small, nagging warmth that had sparked when she'd looked at him with genuine gratitude. Twenty percent of him wished his motives were as noble as she believed. The other eighty percent remained focused on the prize: a connection to one of Asia's most powerful families, facilitated through the only daughter who was already beginning to trust him.

His phone buzzed one more time. A text from Lily:

"Thank you for tonight. Perhaps we could study together tomorrow? There's a lot I'd like to talk about."

Progress, at last. The game continued, but now he held the stronger hand.
