SPIDER-MAN

Chapter 73: 73) Take To The Skies

"Just keep shooting, he says," mocking Hawkeye, looking towards the remaining five arrows he had left.

"I can hear you, you know!" responded Capt while blocking Vulcan's attack.

"Shit," murmured Hawkeye, muting himself.

Amidst the loud chaos, he was watching the quiet sound of metal brushing over each other in the backdrop. Hawkeye paused and listened, trying to focus on the sound before looking behind him.

"What the?" he thought out loud as what appeared to be a pair of large metal wings was flying towards him.

Before he knew it, the metal wings became clearer along with the man who bore them. Hawkeye shot an arrow towards the wings, watching it deflect away like it was a toothpick.

"That's not ideal," he told himself, picking up his quiver and leaping off the building onto the fire escape as the man soared over him.

"We need that support, Hawkeye!" demanded Capt while backhanding Vulcan with his shield.

"Small issue on my end, Capt!" responded Hawkeye, looking into the sky to see the man cover his body with his wings and divebomb towards him. Hawkeye jumped over the railing, catching himself on the one below as the man burst through.

Capt and Peter glanced over to see the commotion before turning their attention back to Vulcan as he continued to attack.

"Spider-Man! Go assist Hawkeye; I'll hold him back until you return." Ordered Capt.

"Roger," replied Peter, swinging towards Hawkeye. F

Hawkeye looked down, watching as the man prepared to charge at him again. "Please make it in time, kid," he muttered, letting go of the railing. As he fell, Hawkeye loaded his bow while the man flew past, his wings slightly grazing him. Hawkeye fired, the arrow piercing the man's leg, who had little to no reaction.

Just before reaching the ground, Hawkeye felt a hand pull him close before swinging away.

"Thanks, kid," said Hawkeye, relieved.

"Wow, you're heavy," replied Peter, giving a fake groan.

"Let's maybe save the jokes for later," replied Hawkeye, peering over Peter's shoulder and seeing the winged man fly towards them, closing the gap fast.

"Hold on tight!" exclaimed Peter before swinging into a nearby backstreet as the man followed. Peter started to run across the wall, carrying Hawkeye in his arms, as the man drew closer, trying to slice through them with his wings as they scraped against the wall.

Peter flipped over him, divebombing to the ground, letting down Hawkeye while latching a web onto one of the man's wings. Peter used the momentum to launch himself into the air, kicking the man across the chin, and causing him to crash through a nearby window while Peter landed onto the roof.

Hawkeye looked towards the ground, holding back his puke. "I think I'm going to hurl," muttered Hawkeye.

Peter looked down before flipping backwards as the man flew through the roof, leaving behind a large hole. Peter prepared himself for the man to turn back around, which he never did, and instead belined for Capt.

"Oh shit," realised Peter, running off the roof to chase after him.

Hawkeye ran out to the middle of the street loading up his final arrow, pressing a button and turning the metal tip of the arrow red. "Bullseye!" he muttered, releasing the arrow towards the man.

Peter continued to swing towards the man, eventually attacking a web to his wings midair.

The man looked behind, watching Spider-Man chase him while Hawkeye pulled back his bow. He relaxed his wings before spinning around, turning his wings into a makeshift shield.

The arrow exploded on contact but dealt no damage while Peter was sent flying, slamming onto a nearby wall and using his foot to catch himself from falling to the ground. Peter looked on as the winged man stopped his spinning and was preparing to attack Capt.

Capt rolled across the ground, groaning in pain, before kneeling on one knee trying to get back up while badly injured.

Vulcan noticed Birdman in the corner of his eye and smiled, "It's over, Captain!" His eyes started to glow.

Capt instinctually held up his shield to defend against an attack that never came, and unaware, Birdman started to dive towards him.

"BEHIND YOU, CAPT!" Yelled Hawkeye and Peter.

Capt looked behind him, unable to react to the attack.

From the alleyway, a beam of ice shot out, sending Birdman flying through the opposing building as Iceman slid out.

"Ed!" yelled Vulcan before firing a blast towards Iceman, who retaliated with his own beam.

Birdman picked himself back up, his chest and wings covered in frost as he tried to get rid of it as it stiffened his wing movement. After shaking off the frost, he started his run-up, trying to get back into the action.

Ed jumped out of the hole before being kicked back through by Spider-Man. "It stops here; just surrender, and you'll be fine, I promise!" said Peter.

Overwhelmed with fear, Peter's words were just a fuzz as Ed reached to his wings, tearing out a metal feather with a sharp rod as a base, screaming in agony. Ed swung his blade towards Peter, tearing up, unaware of what he was doing.

Peter grabbed Ed's hand, squeezing it tight, making Ed drop the blade. Ed's face was pure fear; believing he was about to die, all he could think was, 'I'm so sorry for being weak, Vulcan.'.

Confused, Ed opened his eyes not to an angel or devil but an embrace. Still hesitant, Ed placed his hands on Peter's back, unsure what to do, but his mind clearer.

"It's ok! I don't want to hurt you more than you already have, and I won't, but we must let us stop Vulcan. We don't know what he'll do if this continues, so before it's too late, let us turn the lights back on." Peter walked away and looked Ed in the eyes. "I'll make sure he doesn't die; trust me this once," said Peter.

Ed stared at Peter, still computing what he had said before looking at Vulcan, raging and using his power like it was nothing and pushing Iceman and Capt to their limits. All that anger, loneliness, and bloodlust. A memory slipped into his mind.

Ed stood atop the warehouse roof, equipped with a raincoat, as the rain poured heavily while he looked at the busy street. Cars angrily beeping, all full of normal people, and the people running through the rain without an umbrella and those who walked with one.

"Ed, you'll catch a cold if you stay out in this weather," said Vulcan, his hair and clothes pouring wet.

"What do you dream about, Vulcan?" asked Ed, still looking at the road.

"I used to dream about having a family, but I eventually realised I didn't need to imagine a fake family as I already had one. Even if it's got its little quirks," answered Vulcan sincerely.

"I just want to be normal. Nothing special or important, just someone. No running or hiding, maybe even find someone, like in a Tom Hanks film," replied Ed.

"Don't worry, Ed, I'll make sure you won't need to dream about that ever again. We'll be just like them. No! We'll be even better!" replied Vulcan before snapping out. "Come on, let's go back inside. I'll lend you my CD player for tonight." added Vulcan

"Really!" gleamed Ed.

"Of course," replied Vulcan, helping Ed down the ladder back inside. Vulcan glared towards the main street; just the sight of everyone living made him boil with rage.

"Vulcan?" questioned Ed, noticing how Vulcan wasn't coming down.

Valkan snapped out of his anger and started to climb down.

Ed looked back at Peter. "Save him... please," pleaded Ed.

"I promise," replied Peter, jumping out.

Vulcan looked over. "What did you do to Ed?" he raged.

"This ends here, Vulcan! You've done enough harm and damage. It's time to stop all this," pleaded Peter.

Before he could finish everything, a beam of energy shot towards him. "This ends when all of you are nothing but ashes!" roared Vulcan.
