Han Zhen closed his eyes, calmly let go of his hands, and took a step forward.

One step.

The sound of wind whistling past his ears continued, and the terrifying attacks seemed to brush right by him.

He remained unfazed and took a second step.

The sound of the wind diminished significantly.

A third step.

The howling completely stopped.

At this moment, Han Zhen opened his eyes. He found himself still holding the handle of the villa door, and in front of him was a ghoul-like creature with blood-red eyes hanging upside down.

Its gray, smooth outer skin covered its entire body, entirely hairless, resembling a giant mutated hairless cat. Its crimson pupils glimmered faintly with a red light.

It hung upside down on the villa door, its eyes meeting Han Zhen's directly.

Without hesitation, Han Zhen punched it in the head.

A sharp cry erupted as its head exploded under Han Zhen's punch, spraying blood everywhere.

Behind him, Xia Youwei and Li Lingzhen, who had disappeared earlier, stood frozen in place, their eyes blankly staring ahead. Clearly, they were also trapped in separate illusions.

Without delay, Han Zhen materialized the Fuxi Qin by his side. The calming sound of its melody reverberated, cleansing their spiritual worlds.

In no time, Xia Youwei and Li Lingzhen's eyes regained their clarity.

"Hu... hu..." Xia Youwei gasped for air as soon as she awoke. The illusion she was trapped in was an endless ocean. She had struggled to stay afloat, only to keep sinking into the depths.

Li Lingzhen, on the other hand, seemed better, though her expression was odd. She stared at Han Zhen with a pale face, her legs trembling slightly.

"What's wrong?"

Noticing her strange condition, Han Zhen reached out to comfort her, but she instinctively stepped back.

"In the illusion... there were hundreds of men like Old Wang next door. Now, I feel nauseated just thinking about men."

Li Lingzhen rubbed her face vigorously, explaining as she did so.

Han Zhen froze for a moment, then, without showing any reaction, ground his foot firmly into the already-dead corpse on the ground.

"We were caught in an illusion. This must be the rumored Zerg species raised by the Tier-9 Zerg Emperor—the Nightmare Beast."

"In this barrier, there are bound to be many such Nightmare Beasts."

As Han Zhen spoke, his gaze fell on a nearby flesh blob. Just like in the illusion, it started to throb violently. Seeing this, Han Zhen quickly grabbed Xia Youwei and Li Lingzhen's hands and led them out of the villa.

They stepped onto the streets of Deep Blue City.

Without seeing any gray mist, Han Zhen heaved a sigh of relief.

Just then, he noticed a Deep Blue City resident sitting on a bench in the distance. Like others, this person was staring blankly ahead with empty eyes.

Before Han Zhen could act, the man suddenly reached out and twisted his own neck, dying instantly.

Elsewhere, a couple under a streetlamp abruptly started tearing into each other, biting and ripping at each other's faces until they were left in a gruesome mess of blood and flesh.

The illusion was spreading like a plague, expanding at a terrifying speed.

"Those trapped in illusions will succumb to death faster or slower depending on their cultivation levels. Ordinary people succumb quickly, awakened ones take a bit longer, and the higher their level, the slower they die."

"We don't know how many Nightmare Beasts have been released, but if all the residents of Deep Blue City fall into illusions, it will result in massive casualties."

'What now?'

[Deep Blue City, Outside an Alley]

Mu Yang was panting heavily, looking disheveled.

His clothes were torn, and wounds all over his body sent waves of searing pain through his nerves.

On his arm were two injection marks that hadn't healed yet, indicating he had injected himself twice.

Two injections had allowed him to kill the monsters in front of him a total of twenty times. Yet no matter how many times he tore them apart, they would always reassemble from piles of flesh, becoming even stronger.

Mu Yang could feel his body reaching its limit.

The effect of the Hyper State Type-1 Serum lasted only an hour. The company had given him three doses, and now only one remained.

"DAMN IT! DAMN IT! DAMN IT!"

"I should've checked the almanac before leaving today."

Spitting a mouthful of bloody saliva onto the ground, Mu Yang turned to look behind him. The two colleagues who had accompanied him had already been bitten to death by the mutated monsters.

As if making a firm decision, Mu Yang retrieved a different serum from his storage space.

It was an orange syringe labeled: [Hyper State Type-2 Serum. 50% instability. Use with caution.]

This was the highest-level Hyperstate serum he, as a junior elder, was authorized to carry.

If the Type-1 Serum elevated him to the level of a Tier-4 Awakened, the minimum effect of the Type-2 Serum would make him a Tier-5.

"Damn it, if you push me too far, I'll inject the Type-2 Serum and fight you to the death."

Staring at the piles of flesh that were beginning to reassemble, Mu Yang's eyes gleamed with determination.

[Deep Blue City, Motel]

Li Changhao, along with two underlings, cautiously peeked out the window.

The street illuminated by the streetlamp was filled with Deep Blue City residents in various states of madness, either committing suicide or on their way to it, or engaging in mutual slaughter.

Seeing this, Li Changhao exhaled deeply.

"Good thing I brought some useful stuff this time." He glanced at the shattered jade pendant on the ground and sighed.

The pendant had protected them from one mental attack, which was the only reason the three of them hadn't fallen into illusions immediately.

"Boss, what do we do now?" one of the lackeys asked, still shaken.

They had been fine in their room earlier when the sky outside suddenly turned pitch black, the moon turned red, and they were pulled into illusions.

If not for Li Changhao slapping them both awake, they might've ended up as crazed as the people outside.

"What can we do? Hide and wait it out." Li Changhao said bitterly.

His trip to Deep Blue City had been nothing but trouble.

First, he tried to outshine Han Zhen but failed miserably as the latter's mastery of the Eight Extremities Fist outclassed him.

Then, his uncle, Li Fengchun, disappeared inside the villa.

Now, they were caught in this mess.

"Boss, why is the sky so dark, and why did the moon turn red?"

"This is a high-level barrier, a Zerg ability," Li Changhao explained. "A red moon signifies pollution and also indicates the barrier's core. To break the barrier, we'd need to approach it."

"But the closer we get, the worse the pollution and the stronger the illusions."

Thinking of the situation, Li Changhao figured the authorities wouldn't stay idle for long. Their only option now was to wait for rescue.

As he thought this, a rhythmic knocking suddenly came from the motel door.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
