Some time later, the sun was setting over Reseda when Sam pulled her black Impala into the driveway of the LaRusso home. She had just dropped off her boyfriend Jack Sullivan at his apartment, insisting that he rest after a nasty fight in the school parking lot two days earlier. In that confrontation, Jack had taken a beating trying to protect her from Tory Nichols and other members of Cobra Kai, the martial arts dojo where he trained. But even though she was home, the adrenaline from that night and their conversation were still pumping through her veins. Wanting to release the tension, Sam decided to head to the Miyagi-Do dojo—a quiet place where she practiced a different fighting style taught by her father, Daniel LaRusso.
Inside the dojo, fresh air streamed in through the open window as Sam pounded the wooden bag with a steady rhythm, her fists echoing in the silence. Each blow was an attempt to erase the guilt she carried in her chest—guilt for Robby Keene, her ex-boyfriend, whom she had abandoned while he was locked up in juvie. She knew Jack was Robby's half-brother, a truth that Johnny Lawrence, their father, had recently revealed, but she didn't know how to deal with it. The weight only grew with each punch.
The sound of quick footsteps broke the silence, and before Sam could react, Tory Nichols jumped over the wall into the dojo's backyard, followed by Kyler, Hawk, and another Cobra Kai boy. Tory's eyes flashed with anger as she advanced. "Did you think you could get away with this, LaRusso?" she yelled, launching a kick that Sam blocked with the precise movements of Miyagi-Do, taking a step back to steady himself.
"You guys never learn, do you?" Sam replied, his blue eyes shining with determination as he dodged a punch from Tory, landing a swift kick to her thigh. The blow made Tory stumble, but she recovered with a grunt. Meanwhile, Kyler laughed out loud, grabbing a can of paint he had brought and sloshing the red liquid onto the white walls of the dojo, the paint dripping like blood. Hawk, his red mohawk swinging, kicked one of the training dummies hard, breaking it with a sharp crack, the wooden pieces falling to the floor.
Sam lunged forward, catching Kyler in the chest with a swift blow that knocked him down, but Hawk took advantage of the moment to punch her in the back. Pain exploded, sending her falling to her knees with a groan. Tory wasted no time, punching Sam hard in the shoulder, the impact leaving a bruise as she grunted in pain. Struggling to get up, Sam twisted her body and hit Tory hard in the face, blood dripping from her nose. But it was four against one, and the fourth Cobra Kai grabbed Sam's arm, holding her back as Hawk kicked her in the thigh, nearly knocking her down again.
At that moment, Robby Keene appeared in the doorway of the dojo, his green eyes wide as he stopped, his heart pounding at the sight of Sam in trouble. He had woken up early that morning at Johnny's house in Reseda after being released from reform school on Tuesday—earlier than expected, after only a few weeks, thanks to his good behavior. The night before, Johnny had picked him up and in the car had revealed that Jack Sullivan, a boy Robby had known from school, was his half brother. The news confirmed suspicions Robby had long harbored, but it had left him furious and lost. Without telling his father, he had taken a bus to the LaRusso house, wanting to confront Sam about it, but he had arrived too late to find her home. A neighbor had mentioned that she might be training at the dojo, and now here he was, seeing her surrounded by Tory and the others.
"Get out of her!" Robby yelled, his voice hoarse as he ran inside, fists clenched. He shoved Hawk away from Sam hard and landed a quick punch to Kyler's chest, sending him crashing into the wall with a thud.
Tory stepped back, wiping the blood from her nose with the back of her hand, a cold smile curving her lips as she glared at Robby. "Look who's back! Defending the girl who cuckolded you, Keene?" she said, laughing sharply as Hawk stood up, rubbing his sore shoulder.
"Yeah, the hero of the ex who dumped you for another," Hawk scoffed, his mohawk swinging as he gave a dry laugh. "Pathetic."
Kyler, who didn't know Robby personally, stood up with a smirk, looking him up and down. "So this is Robby? A little runt like that? Are you kidding me that you fell for this little guy, LaRusso?" he said, laughing as he mocked Robby's height, even though he didn't know who he was beyond the rumors.
Sam froze for a moment, her blue eyes widening as she recognized Robby, surprise taking over as she saw him there, fighting for her—him, released from juvie, against Tory and the others. "Robby?" she said, her voice shaking, her heart pounding with guilt and shock as she kicked herself out of the Cobra Kai room.
Robby ignored the taunts, his green eyes flashing with anger as he landed another kick on the fourth Cobra Kai, freeing Sam's arm completely. Before he could say anything, the sound of screeching tires echoed outside, and Daniel appeared in the doorway of the dojo, his eyes wide with surprise and fury.
"Get out of here now!" Daniel yelled, stepping forward, his body tense in a Miyagi-Do stance. He knew from Johnny, who had called on Tuesday afternoon, that Robby was getting out of juvie early for good behavior—just a few weeks—but seeing him there, in the middle of the fight, caught him off guard. "Robby?" he said, his voice thick with shock as he looked from the boy to Sam.
Tory stepped back, wiping the blood from her nose with a cold smile. "This is just the beginning, LaRusso," she said, walking with Kyler, Hawk, and the other Cobra Kai out the same wall they'd climbed to get in. Daniel rushed over to Sam, helping her to her feet, his eyes flicking from her to Robby in confusion.
"Are you okay?" Daniel asked, holding her shoulder and feeling the bruise beneath his fingers, before turning to Robby. "And you… what are you doing here? Johnny said you left yesterday, but…"
Sam stood still, her blue eyes fixed on Robby, the guilt of leaving him behind while he was trapped exploding in her chest, intensified by the surprise of seeing him there, free, helping her against Tory. "I came to talk to you," Robby said, his voice low but steady, his green eyes meeting hers as paint dripped onto the wall behind him.
