Chapter 25: Chapter 25 Zero-Cost Purchase Begins
This conversation made everyone feel like they had found their backbone, and they all agreed that Lu Ruisheng was right.
At this time, everyone was thinking about how to block the doors at night and prevent fires, not caring where the iron door was placed. Everyone consulted Lu Ruisheng about anti-theft measures.
The building leader was no longer fixated on the iron door either. Aside from figuring out how to prevent their own homes from being robbed, the matter of patrolling at night still had to be addressed.
Normally, one person from each household was required, but there were households without men, such as 501, and households where the men were elderly, so they needed to conduct another survey to determine the numbers and then schedule shifts.
Because the internet was down today and there were only a few mobile phones with some battery left, the WeChat group was completely useless. Thus, he asked every household to write down their situations and leave the notes at their doorsteps. He would organize them and write out the duty roster, which would be posted on the first floor tomorrow morning for everyone to see.
Having settled this matter, everyone went home—it was too cold anyway.
As people walked home together, they talked about the thefts and when they might receive airdrops of food again, as their previous supplies had run out and they were about to face a shortage.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng didn't really join the discussion and just followed the crowd home.
After arriving home, the two of them no longer had to worry about people seeing inside their house from the hallway since there were so many iron doors now besides the one across from them. The neighbors across understood boundaries, wouldn't peek inside, and if they knocked, there was no need to open the door immediately—letting them wait a bit before going out was fine.
So, Gu Pan brought out a home generator from the Space and set it up in the study, then turned on the several sets of electric heaters they had. It wasn't long before the temperature inside was comfortable.
They finally didn't have to wear down jackets at home and could lounge in their fleece pajamas.
After settling in, the two sat on the sofa to chat. Gu Pan explained to Lu Ruisheng why she had brought up the topic of retreat due to injury earlier, telling him about their past lives when they were treated as easy marks.
Lu Ruisheng now understood what was going on, and this time, they would only do what was necessary.
They continued their daily physical training during this period; in the apocalypse, having the skills to save your own life was of utmost importance.
The next day, after breakfast, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went downstairs to check the schedule, planning on walking around the community. According to Gu Pan's memories, it was these days when chaos would erupt, so they needed to gather valuable information and determine the exact timing to shoplift from malls before all the good things were gone.
What they most wanted was gold—to extend the Space's time and prevent being kicked out during sudden disasters that might require taking shelter for a few days.
They had just left the building when they heard crying and shouting from the building in front. Hurrying over, they arrived to find quite a crowd gathered at the entrance. Gu Pan approached an older-looking woman and asked, "Sister, do you know what happened here?"
The woman, being naturally gossipy—otherwise, she wouldn't be out in the cold just watching the excitement—quickly filled Gu Pan in. "My dear, you wouldn't know. It's too cruel; a whole family, only a child left, everyone else was murdered. It was a home invasion, with knives. Had the child not hidden in the cabinet, they too would be dead. It was only when the child ran out for help at dawn that everyone found out. If the child hadn't survived, with the freezing weather, the bodies wouldn't emit a smell and who knows when they'd have been discovered."
Gu Pan, uninterested in the gossip, needed critical information about the timing and the police. Thus, she asked, "When did this happen? Why haven't the police arrived yet?"
The woman replied, "It happened late last night, and the child didn't dare to seek help until daybreak today. The building leader and the homeowner's committee are all here. They tried to call the police, but couldn't get through, so the building leader went to the police station and should be back soon."
Grasping a few crucial details, Gu Pan remembered from her past life hearing about this incident in the afternoon. The following day around noon, they learned of the looting at major malls; no authority figures intervened, and everyone started looting from the malls, but by then, it was too late; not much was left, and only scraps were available.
After that, complete anarchy ensued, the order collapsed, marking the true beginning of the apocalypse.
Thinking back to this, Gu Pan thanked the woman and waited for the last piece of information—the building leader's visit to the police station.
Soon, the building leader came running back, hurried and almost falling over. He steadied himself and quickly said, "There's nobody at the police station. A murder occurred with no one to handle it. What do we do now?"
Hearing this, Gu Pan got the answer she sought and hurriedly told Lu Ruisheng, "Let's go home."
Lu Ruisheng saw his wife's urgency and understood the matter was both important and sensitive, so he quickly agreed and they hastened home.
Once home and with the door closed, Gu Pan said, "Call everyone, all the relevant departments, to confirm whether they're all unresponsive. If they are, then we can go 'zero-cost shopping' at the mall."
Lu Ruisheng understood her meaning. They had been waiting for this moment, this most important moment they had been planning for all this time.
Previously, while the police were still responding to calls—ignoring minor issues but attending to robberies and murders—a transition period was expected in the apocalypse, but now the time was ripe.
He quickly grabbed his phone and called every department he could think of. After confirming that no one was picking up, the two quickly changed into more cold-resistant gear and left.
Once they were in an isolated area, Gu Pan took a snowmobile out of the Space, and Lu Ruisheng rode it, bringing Gu Pan directly to the nearest mall.
They didn't enter through the main entrance but through a snow-tunneled side door they had scoped out earlier, which they pried open to enter the mall.
Their target was clear: the gold store on the first floor. But just as they reached the gold store, they saw two men—one tall and one short—furiously stuffing gold into their bags at one of the counters.
Hearing them approaching, the taller one said without looking up, "Bro, too f*cking ecstatic, never thought there'd be a day when we could just take gold like this."
Lu Ruisheng spoke, "I'm not your brother. We don't want any trouble and hope to stay out of each other's way."
The tall man stopped what he was doing, looked at Lu Ruisheng, and said, "Just the two of you thinking of competing with me for supplies? I haven't killed anyone yet and don't want to start, but if you're smart, you'll scram."
Gu Pan pulled out a gun and aimed it at them, "I've killed people before, wanna try me?"
Startled, the tall man dropped a pile of gold necklaces onto his foot, making a jingling sound.
The shorter one, upon realizing Gu Pan was a woman, lowered his guard and said, "Stupid woman, don't think holding a fake gun will scare me. I'm not easily scared. Since you don't want to leave, then let the two of you become a dead couple."
