Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: People Who Can't Distinguish Clearly

The next day, the snow had reached the windowsills of the third floor. The family on the second floor had moved to the fifth-floor hallway. However, they didn't harmonize with the fourth floor, and the elderly lady in Apartment 501 only let them tap into her electricity after receiving some money.

Everyone was careful not to be too extreme, feeling the disaster was about to pass, and it was best not to offend anyone.

That afternoon, Gu Pan received a phone call from her good friend Dong Mingyue. Before Gu Pan could speak, Dong Mingyue excitedly said, "Panpan, you really are my lucky star. You know what? My mother-in-law is all about keeping up appearances. Otherwise, she wouldn't be so eager for us to have children, afraid of idle talk behind her back. These past few days, because we had plenty of supplies, my mother-in-law saved face in our building. Although we gave away quite a bit, she finally looked at me kindly. You know, I've never seen her smile at me so brightly for so many years."

Gu Pan frowned upon hearing this. She had already warned her not to give away supplies, but there wasn't much she could do now. Despite being close, a apocalypse had come, and she wasn't capable of taking care of her friend's entire family. She had done what she could.

So, she just reminded her one last time, "I heard this cold wave is going to last a while longer. Even if the snow stops, getting food might not be easy. You should save what you have and try not to let your mother-in-law give any more away."

Dong Mingyue didn't seem to worry, "It's fine, our country won't abandon us. My mother-in-law says it's rare for our neighbors to need us like this. Giving them something to eat now, they'll remember it for a lifetime. Once the country distributes food, we won't need to give any more."

Gu Pan was silent for a moment and didn't try to persuade her further. She couldn't help much anyway. "Then take care of yourself."

"Yeah, Panpan, don't always be so anxious. When the weather clears up in a few days, I'll treat you to a meal."

"We'll see about that then."

Dong Mingyue felt a bit deflated but said goodbye and hung up the phone.

Lu Ruisheng had listened to the conversation and guessed some details. He handed Gu Pan a cup of hot water, "You've done your best."

Gu Pan took the water and took a sip before saying, "Indeed." After finishing, she picked up the phone, "I'll give Zhenzhen a call to check in."

Lu Ruisheng sat next to her, silently.

Gu Pan called Tian Zhenzhen.

Tian Zhenzhen answered quickly, "Babe, I didn't dare to bother you these past few days. I thought with your newlywed bliss, surely you and President Lu are too busy 'exercising' in bed daily, right?"

Gu Pan laughed at Tian Zhenzhen's words, "Big sister, can you be serious? The world is like this right now; how could I be in the mood for that every day?"

"That's where you're wrong. What weather can stop fiery passion?"

"Stop joking. I have something important to ask you. You didn't give away your food, did you?"

"Of course not, I'm not stupid. Plus, as a girl living in an apartment alone, it would be foolish to flaunt wealth. I've hidden it well. I'll tell you, a friend of mine knowledgeable in mysticism told me that even when the snow stops, the disaster won't cease. I don't believe it, but I still think it's better to stock up."

"Zhenzhen, your mysticism friend might actually have a point."

"Really, you believe in mysticism now?"

"No, just kidding. By the way, once the snow stops, you'll need to go back to your parents', right?"

"Yeah, I've actually been pretty scared at night these past few days. Once I can, I'll go home straight away."

"Then have your dad and brother come to pick you up. And if you really face danger, don't sacrifice your life for your possessions."

"I know, I know, don't worry, it's always Panpan who cares about me the most. By the way, has Mingyue contacted you? Her mother-in-law is at their place, and whenever I call her, she's got this and that to talk about—I'm scared to even call her."

"She just called me, said the supplies I gave her made her mother-in-law very happy, and she's been giving a lot away to neighbors for face."

"What?" Tian Zhenzhen's tone rose: "This damn weather has been going on for nine days, isn't she worried about running out of food one day? Why is she still so thoughtless? I said from the start that Wang Bin wasn't reliable—look, they bought their matrimonial home, and now with the mother-in-law staying, she's giving away things her friends gave her to curry favor with others, what kind of people are they?"

"Don't get angry, we're not kids anymore, even if it's out of concern, we can't live her life for her. Whatever we could say or advise, we've done, the rest is up to her own fate."

"That's true, anyway, I plan on living my life unmarried, not having kids, free and easy. My brother has a son; there's no need for me to carry on the family line."

"Ruisheng and I will just let things take their natural course, we don't stick to many rules."

"President Lu is a good man, I feel relieved that you're marrying him."

"Yeah, meeting him is the luckiest thing in my life."

"Stop it, there you go again, I don't need your mushiness. I'm after sweet dramas; I've got ten brothers on the screen waiting for my favor, bye now."

Listening to the dial tone on the phone, Gu Pan chuckled and set the phone on the table, turning to Lu Ruisheng: "Tian Zhenzhen really is an optimist."

"We're in a position to help, let's offer more help, but who knows how long we can help during the apocalypse; after all, we'll be without a means of communication in a few days."

"Indeed, so it really comes down to people's abilities and fate in the apocalypse. We survived for more than three years in our previous lives, which was already quite impressive, and that's because your Combat Power was strong."

"This time around, we're not just going to survive until the end; we want to live with quality."

After discussing some heavy topics, they went on to talk about the mystic net friend that Tian Zhenzhen had mentioned. In fact, both of them somewhat believed in mysticism, given that they both had their Space—it ought to exist.

In the evening, Gu Pan suddenly felt like drinking, so they had a barbecue that night. They took pre-prepared skewers from the Space, and each had a can of beer as the couple chatted about all manner of things.

If it weren't for the blizzard raging outside, you wouldn't think it was the apocalypse.

On the tenth day, the snow finally stopped, and the wind died down, but the temperature outside had dropped to minus sixty degrees Celsius—the very limit for human survival. At that temperature, any exposed skin would get frostbitten instantly.

Nevertheless, with the snow ceasing, people felt hopeful again, assuming that things would soon pass, not anticipating that the extreme cold could last for months.

By noon, you could see people clearing the snow from the upper floors; it was the military. Seeing the camouflage, everyone saw hope, and despite the cold, opened their windows to cheer.

The snow was too thick to be completely cleared; snow melting agents could only open up the main roads.

Then came an announcement over the loudspeaker, informing that the city had placed snow melting agents at the entrance of each community. The community was organized to clear a path from the building's entrance to the community's gate. However, the snow melting agent was limited, and if it wasn't enough, people would have to continue clearing manually, encouraging everyone to work together against the disaster.

Before long, the building representative in apartment 401 @'ed everyone: after discussions among the homeowners' committee, a relay-style snow removal was arranged. The building closest to the community gate would go first, digging a snow tunnel to the gate, then clearing the path to the next building's entrance, and so on, building to building. The homeowners' committee discussed with the property management to waive half a year's property fees for those first out, and the last building had to volunteer for half a year for the community.

Everyone understood that the first to go out had the hardest job, while the last building had the easiest since they barely had to clear snow, so this form of compensation was widely accepted.

Gu Pan's building was in the second row, neither first nor last—they would just follow along.
