Slayer: I Will Eradicate All Monsters

Chapter 17: The Expedition Begins.

Slayers Academy

Hundreds of students stood in a huge square plaza. All the students were wearing dark combat gear that bore the emblem of the academy. They were all first-year students. Within the group of students, Damien and his class could be seen. Most of the students in the plaza were anxious and worried because today was the day of the Demon Hunting Expedition.

Before the students was a huge podium with several seats arranged on it. One by one, the class teachers and combat instructors of each class went up the podium and sat in the seats. The seats were arranged in three rows, with several in the last row, four in the second, and two large seats in the first.

When the last row was filled, Anna went up and sat in the second seat in the second row, as she was the combat instructor for the Emperor Class (Class S-I)¹. Instructor Charles was still on his mission, so his seat remained vacant.

A dark-haired, curvaceous lady walked up the podium. When she passed by Anna, she snorted and went to sit in the General Class² (Class S-II) instructor's seat. Anna also harrumphed coldly, not willing to be outdone.

"It seems Miss Anna and the General Class instructor don't see eye to eye," Damien muttered.

"The entire General Class doesn't see eye to eye with us," Jason whispered to Damien, beckoning to the class standing a few meters away. Damien looked over and immediately felt a burning gaze meet his eyes.

He saw a burly guy glaring at him. The guy was easily noticeable, being twice the size of everyone there, with a fiery aura surrounding him.

"Why is he looking at me that way? Is he an idiot?"

"Pfft… I didn't know you had a sense of humor, bro. He does look like an idiot, though. His name is Carl Darius from the Darius clan. He's the strongest person in the General Class. Your battle with Sara has spread around the school. Man, I still can't believe you beat her," Jason sighed.

"I was just lucky… but what does my battle with Sara have to do with anything?"

"You're not aware, but on her first day, Sara went to every class and challenged them. The amazing thing is, she won every fight, earning the title of the strongest fresher. A lot of people want to challenge her for that title, and now that you defeated her, people will be after you," Jason explained.

"I don't care about any title. I just wanna kill monsters," Damien replied, ignoring the burly giant.

"Look…"

There was a clamor among the students as they noticed a shadow figure in the sky. The shadow seemed to be falling at incredible speed, creating sonic blasts in the air. In the blink of an eye, a blue-haired, middle-aged man appeared and then stopped in midair, looking at the students calmly. His dark red robes fluttered wildly in the wind.

He floated down and sat in one of the two seats in the front row.

"Woah… That was amazing. Did you see that? Who is that man? Look at the way he created those sonic blasts… he's so cool," several comments rang out among the students. Even Damien couldn't help but be dazzled.

Seeing the students' amazement, the blue-haired man smiled inwardly.

"Show-off," the teachers thought, though no one said anything. They only looked at the blue-haired man with strange expressions. He could have climbed the stage like a normal person but decided to drop in from the sky.

"Hey, we can do that too," they thought but didn't dare voice it. After all, the blue-haired man was the Vice Dean of the academy.

"Hehehe… it's always nice to show my might before them," the Vice Dean thought proudly. However, he maintained a calm expression, as showing emotion would ruin his theatrics.

He stood up and walked to the edge of the stage.

"So, you little guys are the new students? I am the Vice Dean of this academy. As for my name, you'll hear it when you enter the Otherworld Battlefield. For now, you are not qualified," he said with a nonchalant expression.

"But let's talk about something else. Right now, you are in this academy. I don't know what motivated you to enter, but now that you are Slayers, you should all have one thing in mind.

"You see the ordinary people in the city? Do you see the smiles on their faces? Do you see their carefree attitudes? It all came at a cost. Their smiles and joy have been built on the blood and corpses of countless warriors of the races of this world.

"In the battle against Otherworld monsters, many Slayers have been killed—no, they gave up their lives. They martyred themselves so that the Light Continent and the world of Alvaren could know peace.

"Every time a Slayer picks up their blade, knowing they may die in battle, they don't hesitate because they are protecting the smiles of countless people. Many of you have enjoyed the peace bought with the lives of others.

"Now I have one simple request: Show no mercy. Don't hesitate to swing your weapon. To every Otherworld monster you meet… KILL!"

The Vice Dean's voice rang out, resounding through the silent plaza.

The students looked up with reddened eyes, only to see the Vice Dean and the teachers also having red eyes.

The teachers couldn't tell whether the Vice Dean was showing off, but they didn't care.

Which of them hadn't lost a brother, friend, colleague, family member, or loved one on the battlefield? Each had their grievances, and the Vice Dean's words stirred them, making their blood boil.

"KILL… KILL!"

The words rang in the students' hearts.

Damien stood quietly, his hands clenched. His nails dug into his palm, drawing blood, but he didn't notice.

He remembered the smiles of the kids and villagers in Unem Village. They weren't even aware of the existence of Otherworld monsters or the Slayers protecting them. They were ignorant, but that ignorance made them happy.

In the end, he couldn't protect their smiles. He remembered his mother's smile—he couldn't protect that either.

"How could I be so useless?" His fists tightened, drawing more blood, but he remained oblivious.

However, he knew one thing the Vice Dean wasn't saying: that even though people in the capital could smile, deep down they felt anxious and afraid.

"I vow to wipe away every single one of them. That's the only way people can truly smile again."

"Do your best during the expedition. It's also an assessment. The emblems on your armor will record the number of beasts you kill and award contribution points. For now, just know the higher your contribution, the more resources you get.

"I now officially announce… the expedition begins!"

The Vice Dean's words echoed in the students' minds as the plaza erupted into movement. Instructors began barking orders, directing their classes to designated gates were their horses were gathered on the outskirts of the square.

"Damien, over here!" Jason called, motioning for him to follow as the Emperor Class grouped together. Anna stood at the forefront, her piercing eyes scanning her students as if evaluating their chances of survival.

Damien was drawn out of his thoughts, at the same time he felt the burning pain in his palm. But he did not have time to think about the already healing wounds as he went with his class.

"Listen up!" Anna's voice cut through the noise like a blade. "The Demon Hunting Expedition isn't some glorified field trip. The Otherworld doesn't care about your potential or your bloodline. It will chew you up and spit you out if you're not prepared. Stick together, follow my orders, and don't act like heroes. Heroes die young." Her gaze landed on Damien, lingering for a moment before she turned away.

Jason nudged Damien with a smirk. "Looks like you're already her favorite."

Damien shook his head in return and said nothing. He did not think he was a hero himself. Everyone got on their horses as the rolled out of the Academy and the city.

" Look " Jason said, Damien could see a lot of people gathering before their houses and people in their windows.

They began to cheer loudly and clap

" They seem to be cheering for us " Jason

said with a proud expression. Damien fell in a daze seeing the number of people cheering.

"Protect their smiles " once again he felt himself remembering these words.

" Why do I really want to protect these people I don't even know ... do I really have a hero complex "

They rode their horses till they were out of the city. Miss Anna pulled out a map and asked everyone to pull their maps.

A spot had been marked.

" The spot marked used to be a village, a few days ago a rift appeared and some slave level beasts poured out...you only have one mission..kill those bastards and show them whose turf they are on , also I won't intervene so don't die " Anna said , then she took the reins of her horse before shooting off.

Everyone followed her actions and their horses broke into a gallop as well.

The rhythmic pounding of hooves filled the air as the Emperor Class galloped across the barren outskirts of the city. Dust clouds rose behind them, carried by the wind as they rode toward the marked village. Damien gripped the reins tightly, his sword strapped to his side. The burning in his palm had faded, but the resolve in his heart had not.

Jason, riding slightly ahead, turned back and grinned. "Bet you five contribution points I kill more beasts than you." The competitive spirit in him rising.

Damien smirked faintly. "You can keep your points. Just try not to get killed."

"Confidence, huh? Let's see if it holds when you're face-to-face with a beast."

The group followed Anna's lead as she rode at the front with an air of calm authority. Her sharp eyes scanned the horizon, constantly alert for any signs of danger. The students remained close behind her, their nervous chatter subdued by the weight of the mission ahead.

As they approached the marked location, the remnants of the once-thriving village came into view. Charred wooden structures and crumbled stone walls dotted the landscape, evidence of the destruction wrought by the beasts. The air was heavy with the stench of decay, and a low, guttural growl echoed faintly in the distance.

Anna raised a hand, signaling the group to halt. The students reined in their horses, their eyes darting nervously toward the ruined village. The village was eerily silent and covered by dense fog. Anna stopped a certain distance away from the village

"Dismount," Anna ordered. Her voice was calm but firm, leaving no room for hesitation.

" I will not be accompanying you guys any further "

The students obeyed, tying their horses to nearby trees before unsheathing their weapons. Damien's sword felt heavier in his hand than he remembered, but he pushed the thought aside. There was no room for doubt now.

The students followed each other closely, their footsteps muffled against the cracked earth. The atmosphere was tense, each creak of wood or rustle of wind setting their nerves on edge.

Damien's sharp senses caught movement out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head slightly, his grip tightening on his sword. A shadow flickered between two ruined buildings, too fast and too large to be human
