Shadow Slave: The Great Hunt

Chapter 12: Wilderness Survival

And so his first night in the Academy passed in his cocoon of soft and amazing mass produced bedding.

He awoke to his alarm and quickly washed his face changing back into his barely worn uniform which was just one of the many outfits allowed to him.

With a skip in his step as he quickly made his way to the cafeteria once again loading himself up with a more than healthy portion of similar food to the dinner last time.

What was different was the amount of people it looked like every table save one which was currently filled by the blind girl and Sunny saved a few open seats in some unfriendly territory.

Sitting down he didn't even attempt to strike up a conversation knowing that his two table mates would not be interested in his impression; they both seemed to be particularly broody at least compared to that of the average teenager.

Just as he was finished chewing his last bite he heard a commotion from a large screen that he had failed to notice earlier, what with his extreme involvement in his meal if he had to guess.

Ahh. There it is the ever famous rankings for the new batch of Sleepers.

Looking up at the list he was unpleasantly surprised, it seemed he had outdone himself. Placing in third he frowned looking at the photos and names of the two people in front of him.

The second placer showed obvious signs of being a Legacy, his handsome features and clean and orderly smile. What surprised him more was the girl. At first it was the very same one on the bridge who he had attempted to shake the hand of.

Looking across her name he was not too surprised to see that she held a true name as he knew she had another Divine Aspect.

"Changing Star." he whispered to himself, feeling the gravity that came with that name.

And as he realized it the rest of the Sleepers did as well and a murmur seemed to spread through the ranks as they all turned to look at the girl in the corner, her eyes seemingly lost in thought.

Whilst his eyes were panning he noticed a strange grim look on Caster, the person in second place.

Finally after a poignant pause Nephis looked up

"Hmmm, what?"

Gathering himself Caster walked out of the group towards the solitary girl giving a short bow whilst saying.

"Lady Nephis. I am Caster from the Han Li clan. I see that your trial went well?"

Lady? But she also came in with the police car? She must be important.

Seemingly perplexed, Nephis shrugged, smiling an overly bright expression passing her face.

"Is that what it is?"

Caster awkwardly, "I see. I am very glad that you returned unharmed. Uh… not that I doubted your abilities."

Nephis nodded, turning back to her coffee whilst her eyes took a quick scan of the crowd, seeming to rest on the tall figure of Art for a mere second.

Art meanwhile had long ago lost interest in the hoity toity Legacies turning back to see that Sunny was at the bottom of the rankings with Casandra who must be the blind girl.

And so the breakfast went by and soon classes started.

Naturally it was only Sunny and himself in the Wilderness Survival class which was completely empty save a small man who sat behind a dark and paper filled desk.

"Oh and another one shows up!"

The lively old man who must have been the teacher said as he walked in a minute late.

"So sorry to be late I guess the rest of the students must also be in the same predicament?"

He stated as though posing the question.

"Oh no you two are the only ones but I find I do better with smaller classes anyways I am Awakened Julius but you both can call me teacher Julius. Young man, have a seat and tell us your name."

Taking the chair next to Sunny he smiled and tried to turn on some of the charm that had got him through the early days of living in the outskirts.

"Hi sir my name is Artemi but I prefer Art."

"A beautiful name. I was just getting into this with your partner over here but why did you choose wilderness survival? rather than those combat classes with no real value?"

The old man asked with a look of superiority crossing his face as he seemed to stand taller.

"Well our answers should be similar, you see the government official that transported us Master Jet advised it of us."

Artemi Answered continuing quickly.

"Also because of the nature of my Aspect I will only be with you for half of the day and spend the latter half with the Transformation ability instructor."

"I see. Wait, did you say Jet?'

Then widening his eyes

"Soul Reaper Jet? That savage gave you such good advice? She must be losing her way."

Before he could Sunny piped in.

"Teacher, you know Master Jet?"

"Who doesn't?! She is one of the most feared Awakened in existence. Her Aspect Abilities disregard the mortal protection of her targets entirely. No amount of armour and very few Aspects can resist her powers,"

"Anyways, that is enough of my ramblings. If you can get above 90% on the quiz before lunch I will share with you more."

And just like that, Teacher Julius quickly went into a thorough overview of the concepts they would be covering in the next 4 weeks, making Art's head hurt at the sheer amount of knowledge that they would need to learn.

This went from the theoretical to the Practical and even languages as apparently they would be useful.

In the end both Art and Sunny failed the quiz and were released to the equally if not quite large lunch.

Both sat at the table sharing the now amiable Silence With Cassie as he believed she was called

Eventually though a lean muscle man in uniform walked up to Art

"Come with me boy. I will teach you."

Looking up Art saw a man with dark hair and tanned skin, sporting strange slitted eyes that remind him uncomfortable of those of a cat.

"Did you hear me?"

I thought it would make sense that because of his position on the leader board he would have mandatory transformation lessons let's see how you all like them and if they don't make sense please tell me
