Chapter 55: Safety of a Cell
{PLEIADES POV}
Observing the stars above me swirling around the triangle, I looked blankly at it and released a long sigh.
"Hmmm, what about, maybe a cursed technique from JJK? You already basically have Sukuna's" Regis said as he lay on the still surface of my soul sea. Scratching my forehead, I put my hands behind my head and got lost in my thoughts.
Currently, Regis and I were brainstorming what abilities I would create for when we faced the Slayer and whatever else was waiting for us there.
It had been a week of slow and relatively calm walking. Sure, there was always a small group of nightmare creatures, but those were easily taken care of—mostly by the new recruits.
Even though they were still incredibly suspicious, they were reliable. However, battles against regular awakened abominations would likely prove futile when we faced the real challenge.
I mean, we were only a day or two away from reaching the Slayer's Rest, and we'd already found the statue tied to the monster holding the moonlight shard.
The statue we had found depicted a lithe young woman—or at least what would have looked like a woman. When we came across it, though, the statue was missing its head and upper torso. The remains were on the ground, and within the head, a small brood of monstrous scorpions was housed.
One of the new guys got a nasty surprise when he approached it. Of course, Sunny was already aware they were there but had neglected to say so, hoping to get rid of at least one of these guys.
Yet, the small and quite morbid scheme failed, and the cohort ended up engaged in battle. Not that I was going to complain—after all, Regis got a good number of kills.
While I wasn't in control at the time, I also helped out now and then, using tentacles to keep the scorpions off the main cohort, which was the true cohort, not the new guys.
During the battle, I managed to record Caster's aspect, which now allowed me to move faster than the eye could see. This, combined with the darkness manipulation I had recorded from the Forsaken Knight, could prove to be a deadly combo.
So, with that being said and done, it was very likely we'd reach the destination by tomorrow.
Currently, Sunny was keeping watch during the night along with one of the new guys. The man's name was Terlas. He was well-built and a head taller than Sunny.
He had strange, glassy, almost smoky turquoise eyes that accented his messy yellow hair. He wore armor made of chainmail with a gray undershirt beneath. By his side was an elegant rapier with an almost mirror-like blade.
The most bizzare part of the weapon was it's enchantment, which allowed one to deal a concentrated strike towards a soul core, which would then slowly break it apart.
If i killed him at some point that memory coul do wonders for me
Not really interested in everything else, I returned my focus to my mind in the soul sea.
A brand new thing I had learned about my soul sea was pretty handy. It had two unique states.
First, when I entered it, I could remain there indefinitely. I could be in it for hours, and when I came back, I would return to the exact moment I had entered.
The second state allowed me to anchor my mind to Sunny. Then I could enter the soul sea and share two states of being, meaning my time in the soul sea would pass at the same pace as in the real world.
In practice, I could switch between being in my soul sea and being in Sunny's body while sharing his perspective and senses.
It was neat because most of the time, the whole experience felt like more of a walking simulator than the action-adventure world it should have been.
Like this, I could hang out in the soul sea and entertain myself there. But even then, this still felt more like a prison than a sanctuary.
"Okay then, so will you keep staring at my maker without responding, or...?" Regis's voice dragged me out of my thoughts. I blinked a few times before looking at him.
"Yeah, my bad, lost in thought. What were you saying again?"
Lying on his side, Regis gave me a droopy look, most likely missing the sensation of being petted by Effie.
"Well, I suggest that we steal—I mean, take inspiration from JJK to make a new ability."
Yawning, I nodded and gave him a droopy look of my own. "What were you thinking about? Maybe the Ten Shadows so you can have two wolf bros?"
Rolling to the other side, Regis exhaled and then stood up before lying on his tummy. "I dunno, maybe? Weren't you gonna make a bankai or something?"
Lying on my stomach as well, I felt strange but shrugged it off in favor of just relaxing. "Mhhhhmmm, this feels nice…"
I almost purred as I felt my consciousness fade, but before I could fall asleep, I heard the splashing of water approaching me. Using as little energy as possible, I turned my eyes towards Regis, who was now standing over me.
Regis leaned down, his ghostly form casting a faint glow over my prone body as the water of the soul sea rippled beneath us.
"You're seriously going to pass out here, of all places?" he said, voice dripping with mock disdain.
"Not exactly the image of a master strategist plotting his next move."
Groaning at his mockery, I rolled onto my back and stretched lazily. "What's wrong with relaxing for a bit? I've been carrying you freeloaders for ages. Soul Sea naps should be my prerogative."
Regis snorted and clicked his tongue. "Freeloaders? Excuse you. I'm the only reason you're still alive, genius. Let's not forget who kept you from going insane during that little tantrum you threw a little bit ago."
Smiling, I sat up with a lazy shrug. "Details, details. You weren't even the one who—and I quote—'saved me.' It was that thing that graced this world with you and saved me along the way. Don't take credit" I said, pointing to the triangle stationed above the two of us.
Regis crouched, a mischievous glint in his ghostly eyes. "Right, right. But seriously, though, we've got maybe a day before things get dicey. Slayer's Rest isn't exactly a five-star resort… i think?
You've got ideas brewing, so stop lounging and start finalizing. What's it gonna be? Some flashy anime-inspired ability? Or are you going to stick to your 'Erm, I only wanna make abilities when completely necessary?'" he added in his nerdy voice.
Rubbing my temples, I heaved a sigh. "… Fine, let's brainstorm. The Jujutsu Kaisen idea isn't bad. A Ten Shadows knockoff could be versatile."
"Yeah, but you'd need the right kind of oomph to make it work," Regis replied, mimicking a dramatic explosion with his paws. "You could also go simpler—some busted barrier technique. Or, hear me out, the Schrift of Overkill."
Furrowing my brows, I tried to remember what that schrift did. "Overkill. What does that one do again?"
Regis tilted his head and replied somewhat reluctantly, "Well, it makes you stronger by killing. How do you not remember?"
Looking at the wolf, I put a hand over my mouth before yawning. "Well, you have my memories as a foundation of your being, while for me, I only really remember all the important stuff. So, pardon me for not remembering some random Quincy that probably got no screen time."
"… Well, I guess that makes sense. I do remember everything. It actually kinda frightens me as well. I still remember that time you stole those toys at the store and even how some meals from way back in your youth tasted."
Regis seemed to have only now realized just how much he remembered. "Ohhh goodness, I remember everything. Ughhh, your teenage years were horrible."
Regis blanched, and I nodded along. It was true; puberty was like a hell of its own. My face contorted at the memory of my teenage years as I got up and stretched.
"Well then, I guess we can get to it."
