Chapter 31: momma
Mom- goddamit Alice where's your fucking answer sheet?
Alice- i don't know.
Mom- what do you mean you don't know?
Alice- i don't know its not in my bag....
Mom- so you mean you lost it? Are you fucking kidding me?
Alice- ....
[Alice whimpers while searching through her bag.]
Mom- did you throw it away?
Alice- it was right here...
Mom- WHERE IS THE PAPER? WHERE IS IT? Where is it? Huh?
Alice- Mom please!
[Alice cries loudly as her mother beats her up.]
Mom- you bring me the paper by today evening or I'll throw you out of the house. YOU UNDERSTAND ME? I shouldn't have let you go outside...
Alice- ....
Mom- SPEAK TO ME!
[Alice keeps looking for the paper and finds it in her skirt pocket and takes it out with her shaking hands.]
Alice- i found the paper look.
Mom- ..give me that...
[Her mother snatches the paper. And looks at the marks.]
Mom- 14 out of 20? Why's your handwriting like this? Is this how i taught you to right?
Alice- i couldn't write the 5th answer.
Mom- what? Speak louder.
Alice- i don't know.
Mom- i spend so much money on your tuition for what ? What do you do in the coaching? Sleep all day? Fucking waste of money.
[Alice weeps silently while her mom punches her then throws the question paper onto her face. Alice takes the blows silently and cries heavily. 2 years later.]
Girl- hey Alice how much did you get?
Alice- why don't you mind your own business, Karen.
Girl- ....god you're such a bitch.
[Teacher starts announcing everyone's class test scores.]
Teacher- ....Alice 20 out of 20 which is the highest in class. Good job dear.
[Alice gets home with a beaming smile.]
Mom- 20 out of 20.
Alice- ...
Mom- what about computer science?
[Alice hands the answer sheet.]
Mom- hmm 17 out of 20? You don't know what a terabyte is? Tsk tsk tsk. What's this? True or false mistakes? Are you sleeping during exams?
Alice- i couldn't remember the value.
Mom- i don't care dear. Who got the highest?
Alice- ....
Mom- WHO GOT THE HIGHEST?
Alice- Shaalynii.
Mom- that girl? Isn't she like below average?
Alice- she's good at computer.
Mom- if a dumbfuck like her can get 20 out of 20 why cant you?
Alice- she only got 17 and half out of 20.
Mom- why se got the point 5 more?
Alice- i dont know... maybe she cheated from Susie's paper.
Mom- are you talking back to me?
Alice- I'm just saying. Why do you take everything so seriously?
Mom- what did you just say?
Alice- ...
Mom- you know you should be grateful that i worry about your studies. Ask your friends. How many of their parents care about their studies.
Alice- Tony's mom and dad help him with his studies.
Mom- and?
Alice- ruby too.
Mom- you can't make this up.
Alice- ....
Mom- be glad that i was here for you.
Alice- all you did was beat me up whenever you got a chance.
Mom- EXCUSE ME!?
Alice- ....
Mom- SAY THAT AGAIN!
Alice- i hate you mom.
[Alice shuts herself in her room while her mom keeps cussing and banging her door from outside. 3 years later...]
Mom- Alice how was your score?
Alice- ...
Mom- Alice...
Alice- ...
Mom- ALICE...
Alice- ...
[Alice shuts herself in her room.]
Mom- who the hell does she think she is?
Dad- dear calm down.
Mom- why should i calm down?
Dad- i know she scored well. She showed me the result yesterday.
Mom- oh really? How much she got?
Dad- 20 out of 20. Your daughter is gifted alright.
Mom- Gifted my ass. You have no idea how much of a slacker she was back in the day.
Dad- honey she's only in school right now. Her grades won't matter in college ....all except the graduation scores.
Mom- i don't care. I have seen way too many kids go the wrong way because their parents don't pay any attention.
Dad- calm down ok? Alice isn't going anywhere. She's perfect And she is right here. She will do good with or without your help.
Mom- you don't have a clue about child raising do you?
Dad- seriously? You're doing to turn this into our problem?
Mom- ....
Dad- ....sometimes you have to fail as a parent, Edith. You can't always be right.
Mom- god I'm glad you didn't have any kids with that wench.
Dad- ...
[Her mom and dad fight over because of those statements but her mom doesn't change. Back at school.]
Girl- god Alice has such an attitude problem. Ugh i hate her.
Amy- i agree. But she scores the best in class anyway. She's the topper so it's good if we don't go up against her. She's our one way ticket to good scores afterall.
Girl- ugh whatever i hate her.
[Alice listens to their convo when Melvin comes and sits with her to share his tiffin.]
Melvin- those girls be bitching about you like you owe them money.
Alice- everyone's insensible.
Melvin- not me right?
Alice- nope. Hahaha....
Melvin- my nonna made me eggs Benedict today. You have to try.
Alice- and let's see what my mom made me.
[Alice takes out her tiffin]
Melvin- mayo sandwich again?
Alice- hey look there's salad dressing inside.
Melvin- you gotta take a bite out of my Benny.
[Melvin force feeds her while Amy and the girls at the back cringe at the back.]
Alice- wow that is awesome.
Melvin- right? Nonna is the best cook.
Alice- isn't she amazing?
Melvin- she basically raised me.
Alice- ....what about your mom and dad?
Melvin- they were always busy with business trips and vacations. Sometimes i wonder if I'm really their child at all. Last year i probably just spent only 5 days with both of them.
Alice-.... god...you're joking right?
Melvin- ....take it whatever way you will.
Alice- god. You're making me feel privileged.
Melvin- i know right?
Alice- well my mom is really really strict about my studies but she makes good food and stays home when i need her.... well i should thank my dad for that. She couldn't get time for me if not for him.
Melvin- your step dad?
Alice- yeah him.
Melvin- i see.
Alice- she also screams less nowadays. Back when she was single parenting, she used to beat me up for everything.
Melvin- ....
Alice- i have seen her worst and the best.
Melvin- so you don't resent her?
Alice- not really. Don't take this in a bad way but Amy's mom is almost same as yours.... she's busy with office and Amy's dad too. Her sister is there for her most of the time.
Melvin- dang.
Alice- shits crazy huh?
Melvin- you're really making me feel bad right now...
Alice- aww don't be...
Melvin- hmm.
Alice- don't be jealous of me. An empty house isn't that bad. Plus you have unlimited freedom.
Melvin- true... hahaha...
Alice- they give you lots of pocket money too huh?
Melvin- yeah.
Alice- then i don't see any problem.
Melvin- yeah....
Alice- god this topic is really depressing.
Melvin- yeah.....hahaha.
Alice- let's talk about something else.
