Chapter 8: An Emergency.
Rita mother, Noame, woke up in the morning feeling dizzy and disoriented. She tried to sit up, but was aware of nausea washing over her, and she felt falling back onto the bed. Her husband, David, was by her side in an instant, concern etched on his face.
"Naome, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice shaking slightly. Noame tried to speak, but her words were slurred and nonsensical. David's eyes widened in alarm as he realized something was seriously wrong. " Noame, can you hear me?" he asked, his voice formed but gentle. Noame's eyes fluttered closed, and she went limp. David's heart raced as he grabbed the phone and dialed nine one one.
"Hello emergency services? My wife is unconscious, and I need an ambulance right away!". The operator's calm voice instructed David to stay on the line while help was dispatched. David held Noame's hand, praying for her to wake up.
Within a minute, the ambulance arrived, and the paramedics rushed Noame to the hospital. David followed close behind, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios.
At the hospital, the doctors and nurses quickly took Noame into the emergency room. David paced anxiously in the waiting room. His heart was heavy with worry.
Finally, the doctor, a kind looking woman with a gentle smile, explained the situation. David, your wife's ultrasound scan showed an abnormality. We need to run some more tests, but it's likely that she has a ruptured appendix. We need to operate immediately.
David felt like he had been punched in the gut. A ruptured appendix? That sounded so serious. He couldn't lose his wife. "How long do we have?," David asked, his voice shaking. " The sooner we operate, the better," the doctor replied. " We need to get her into surgery within the next hour.
The next hour was a blur. David watched as his wife was wheeled into surgery, his heart heavy with worry. He paced back and forth in the waiting room, praying for a successful operation.
Finally, the doctor emerged from the surgery room, a look of exhaustion on her face. "David, the operation was a success. Your wife is in recovery now. David let out a sigh of relief, tears streaming down his face. Thank you. He whispered, his voice trembling with gratitude.
But the doctor's expression turned serious, David, your wife's condition is still critical. We need to monitor her closely over the next twenty-four hours." David's world went dark as he processed the news. He thought of Rita and how she would cope with this. He knew he had to be strong for his family, but it was hard to keep them together.
So David decided to call his daughter Rita after getting some relief to tell her about her mother's condition, Noame. When Rita heard her phone ringing, she reached for it, expecting to hear Carlson's warm voice at the other end, perhaps calling to surprise her with a sweet good morning message or to make plans for their next adventure together. But instead, her heart raced as she heard her father, David's urgent tone. " Rita, am so glad I reached you," David said, his voice laced with concern it is about your mother. She's been taken to hospital. You need to come quickly."
Rita's heart skipped a beat. What happened? She asked, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. David replied," she was diagnosed with a ruptured appendix and the doctor said she needed immediate surgery. You should get here as soon as you can. David replied in his small tone. Rita's world went dark, she felt like she had been punched in the gut. Her mother, her rock, her everything. She couldn't lose her.
I will be right there, Rita said, her voice shaking. She hung up the phone and quickly grabbed her bag. Her mind was a blur as she rushed out of her apartment and hauled a taxi. The ride to the hospital felt like an eternity.
When she arrived, she saw her father, David, waiting for her in the lobby. His face was etched with worry. "Rita, I am so glad you are here," he said, his voice softening. "Your mother is in critical condition. The doctors are doing everything they can, but it's not looking good."
Rita felt like her world was crushing down around her. She couldn't lose her mother, not now, not ever. " Can I see her? Rita asked the doctor, her voice barely above a whisper. The doctor nodded. Yes, but only for a few minutes. She need her rest."
Rita nodded and followed the doctor to the recovery room. Her mother lay on the bed, her face pale and weak, but a live. Rita felt aware of relief washing over her.
Mom Rita whispered, taking her mother's hands in hers. "I am here. I am not going anywhere." Her mother's eyes flickered open, and she smiled weakly. Rita my baby girl. Rita smiled back, tears streaming down her face. I am here mom. You are going to be okay."
The next twenty-four hours were about worry, prayer, and vigilance. Rita barely left her mother's side, watching her every breath, every heart beat, but slowly, her mother started to recover, her strength returning with each passing hour.
Finally, the doctor gave them the thumbs up, "She is going to be okay, Rita, she is going to make it." Rita collapsed into tears, relief washing over her like a tidal wave. She had almost lost her mother, but now she was going to be okay. She was going to make it. As Rita hugged her mother she knew that their bond was unbreakable, and alone could conquer even the darkest time.
When aunt Rachael called rita, Rita picked up the phone. Rachael's voice was warm and concerned on the phone. "Rita my dear, how are you doing? I haven't heard from you in a while. Rita hesitated, unsure of how much to share. Rachael, "lam actually not in Gulu city right now. " What do you mean? Where are you?" Rachael asked, her tone changing from concern to confusion.
Rita took a deep breath. "I am in Kampala City where Mom and dad live. I had to come here because she has been hospitalized."
Rachael gasped. " Oh Rita, I am so sorry! What happened to your mother?" Rita explained the situation, leaving out no details. Rachael listened alternatively, her expression changing from shock to worry.
I had no idea, Rita am sorry you are going through this. How is your mother now? Rita updated Rachael on her mother's condition, feeling a sense of relief that she could share her burden with someone who cared. Rachael offered words of encouragement and support. "Rita, you are not alone in this. We are all here for you and your mother. Keep us updated, okay?"
Rita nodded even though aunt Rachael couldn't see her. " I will, Rachael. Thank you for calling. It means a lot to me."
As they ended the call, Rita felt a sense of gratitude for her aunt's love and support. She knew she could count on her, no matter what!
