Chapter 39: Chapter 39: As Beautiful as a Flower, As Fierce as a Wolf
After the members of Aogiri Tree fully retreated, the battle came to an end.
Su Xiao sheathed [Dragon Flash] and picked up his coat from the ground, draping it over his shoulder.
During the fight with Takatsuki Izumi, he had lost 12% of his health. Blood was still flowing from his abdominal wound, causing his health to continue to drop slowly.
Su Xiao also kept an eye on Takatsuki Izumi's health bar. His two slashes had reduced her health by about 10%.
It had to be said, the vitality of ghouls was truly astounding. In her kakuja form, Takatsuki Izumi's stamina attribute was likely over 15 points.
If they were to compare attributes, Takatsuki Izumi would certainly be stronger than Su Xiao, but in terms of combat power, it was harder to judge.
From Su Xiao's perspective, Takatsuki Izumi had decent combat experience but terrible technique, relying mostly on brute strength.
This was why Su Xiao could easily take down S-class ghouls. Ghouls typically fought by charging straight ahead and overpowering their enemies with brute force.
Otherwise, CCG's investigators wouldn't stand a chance against ghouls.
CCG investigators were just ordinary humans with superior physical abilities, relying on skill and intelligence to fight ghouls—though there were a few exceptions.
The appearance of Amon Koutarou indicated that the area was now surrounded by CCG, presenting Su Xiao with a perfect opportunity to join the organization.
After sheathing [Dragon Flash], Su Xiao calmly walked toward Amon Koutarou.
"Stop!" Amon shouted, pressing the button on the handle of his suitcase. The suitcase began to transform rapidly, something inside expanding at high speed.
The suitcase hit the ground, and a strange weapon appeared in Amon Koutarou's hands—a long metal staff, with the top half wrapped in kagune. This was Amon's quinque.
Su Xiao found the weapon's design amusing. Could you really fight with something like that?
"Who are you? Ghoul or human?" Amon asked warily, gripping his quinque tightly. He had witnessed Su Xiao chasing after the One-Eyed Owl, Takatsuki Izumi, and it had shaken him to his core.
"Have you ever seen a ghoul fight with a sword?" Su Xiao casually placed his hand on the hilt of his sword and continued walking toward Amon.
Amon was about to respond when Su Xiao interrupted.
"There's no need to be nervous. If I wanted to kill you, you'd already be dead."
A flash of white light streaked through the air as Su Xiao unsheathed [Dragon Flash], bringing the blade to Amon's neck.
"Gulp." Amon swallowed hard, stunned by Su Xiao's lightning-fast draw.
"So, relax."
Su Xiao withdrew [Dragon Flash] and patted Amon on the shoulder.
Amon was overwhelmed with a sense of defeat. If the man in front of him were a ghoul, he'd already be dead.
"Hey," Su Xiao called out.
"What?" Amon looked at him, confused.
"Does the CCG need more people? Consider that ghoul over there my entry gift."
It was then that Amon noticed the headless corpse of a ghoul nearby.
"Is that... Jason, the S-class ghoul?" Amon exclaimed, gripping his quinque tightly as he rushed over to the body. The ghoul, known as Jason, was listed in the CCG's archives.
"You haven't answered my question." Su Xiao said, pulling out some medical bandages from his storage space. He hastily cleaned the blood from his abdominal wound and wrapped it up haphazardly.
Amon hesitated but realized this was an opportunity. Su Xiao had chased after the One-Eyed Owl, clearly proving his immense strength. In the entire CCG, there were likely no more than two people capable of such a feat.
"Joining the CCG requires a strict assessment, but your situation is unique. As long as we confirm you're not a ghoul, joining shouldn't be a problem." Amon replied.
Hearing this, Su Xiao smiled.
What he had feared most was that joining the CCG would be too complicated, as he didn't have much time left for his main quest.
"Tap, tap, tap..." The sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the room as an elderly man with shoulder-length white hair and a suitcase entered.
The old man had a manic look, with one eye larger than the other. His movements were twitchy and neurotic, giving him a sickly appearance.
"Where is it? It must be here... the Owl."
The man was Mado Kureo, Amon Koutarou's superior and a senior investigator.
Mado Kureo had once been a righteous ghoul investigator, kind and gentle. But after witnessing his wife being eaten alive by a ghoul, he had changed. Now, he harbored an intense hatred for ghouls and was obsessed with making quinques.
Even so, Mado Kureo still treated his colleagues well, as seen in how seriously he mentored Amon Koutarou.
"Mado-san, you're here." Amon said quietly, approaching Mado Kureo and whispering something in his ear.
Moments later, Mado Kureo's mismatched eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at Su Xiao.
With startling speed, Mado rushed over to Su Xiao and began sniffing around him like a dog.
"Human, no doubt about it. I'll never forget the stench of those monsters." Mado muttered. After confirming that Su Xiao was human, he suddenly became very enthusiastic.
"Hello, I'm Mado Kureo. Did you really fight the One-Eyed Owl?"
There was a fiery intensity in Mado's eyes, burning with expectation.
Seeing that look, Su Xiao sighed. It was a look he knew all too well—pure, unrelenting hatred.
"Yes, I fought her. The terrain wasn't favorable, and she escaped. Pity."
"Ha ha ha!" Mado Kureo laughed, his manic, neurotic voice filling the room.
"You want to join the CCG? Come with me. I'll vouch for you."
At this point, Mado no longer cared about Su Xiao's background. As long as he could kill the One-Eyed Owl, he was willing to pay any price, even his life.
"Mado-san, calm down," Amon placed a hand on Mado's shoulder, trying to steady him. After taking a few deep breaths, Mado nodded.
"And what's your name?" Amon asked, giving Su Xiao a polite smile.
"White Night."
"And your background?"
"..."
Su Xiao's silence made Amon a bit uneasy.
"How about this, Mr. White Night," Amon suggested, "You're injured from fighting ghouls. We have a medical truck downstairs. As for joining the CCG, we can discuss that at the 20th Ward branch."
After some thought, Su Xiao nodded and followed Amon downstairs. Mado had already noticed Jason's corpse and carried it along with them.
At the base of the building, there were over a dozen vehicles parked, with flashing red and blue lights. Police sirens filled the air as officers worked to evacuate nearby civilians.
Sitting shirtless on a portable bed beside one of the CCG's medical trucks, Su Xiao watched as a pretty nurse diligently treated his wound.
"Um..." The nurse spoke hesitantly, catching Su Xiao's attention.
"The wound is very deep. I recommend using a small dose of anesthetic, or else..."
"No need," Su Xiao interrupted. "Anesthetic will dull my reflexes. Just stitch it up."
The nurse hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded.
Though the nurse was as delicate as a flower, with a shy voice that made her seem easy to approach, her hands were far from gentle. The occasional twitch in Su Xiao's face revealed the pain she was inflicting.
