Chapter 12: Development level up
Just a month earlier, this doomed bee could've been me. This still could be me! Those wasps…
A Foreman Bee flew closer to me, frowning.
"Father? Are you unhappy with our work? We do our best! We can bring more people to guard Foragers to protect them better, if you think it will be better."
But there were already so many unprotected Forager Bees out there… I shook my head. There will just have to be more Foremen Bees in the future.
The Foreman Bee interpreted the shaking in her own way.
"So you are alright? That's good! Don't worry, we will manage, Father!" she waved at me dismissively.
'These Foremen Bees are getting so overconfident—that's just not good for them! Is this from my training, or my genes? But I'm not confident at all!'
As I thought this, I was suddenly hit by an announcement.
My somber mood was forgotten in an instant.
Hell yeah, finally! Sweet, sweet attribute points, and maybe I will get more lifespan and will stop living like my last day is just around the corner! And my daughters will become stronger, too!

As soon as our group of Foragers returned to the safety of the hive, I retired to my room.
It was dark inside the hive and away from the entrance, but my bee eyes were surprisingly light-sensitive. My room was close to the exit, and the little light that went through the wax walls was enough to read and write.
Plus, system windows were visible even in total darkness.

Just 550 Foremen Bees had barely improved the colony's stats, but that boost was the last drop I needed for this level up.
And for the first day in a long while, the food storage didn't go down today!
This brought me a cautious hope that we won't die from hunger.
The colony didn't have resources to spare Foremen Bees from their work just yet. But I would have to train more of them, and to ensure there are hammers for everyone, and then, finally, there will be prosperity!
'I will start working toward that by spending my attribute points… Please, please, let there be some cool OP genes that will solve all my problems, starting with my lifespan!'
I never scratched lottery tickets with the same anxiety and anticipation that I put my first attribute point into endurance.
By this point, I had 68 days of life… Not enough! Not at all!
〔For improving endurance, you have a choice of next genes: 'Improved Immunity I', 'Improved Lifespan II', and 'Improved Metabolism I'.〕
〔Improved Immunity I: reduces chances of falling ill by 20%.〕
〔Increased Lifespan I->II: +60 days to lifespan.〕
〔Improved Metabolism I: reduces the need for food by 5%.〕
Damn, they all were good. Well, not the first one, not now, but the third one? A lifesaver!
I still picked the lifespan upgrade, of course.
Then, to test my luck, I put another point into endurance. But of course, the delicious technology didn't reappear.
〔Improved Immunity I: reduces chances of falling ill by 20%.〕
〔Fat Padding: allows to accumulate fat padding by overeating, which slightly increases defense and maximum health.〕
〔Enhanced Endurance II: increases base endurance to 20.〕
'Overeating? The colony has thousands of mouths, we are several bad days away from starving—what are we going to overeat?'
So, should I take extra immunity or extra endurance? They both were kind of boring.
'Wait a second, stamina scales with endurance. If I increase my endurance, maybe Ambrosia won't tire me so quickly during sex! Except, wait, her stamina would also grow. D-damn, now I really want to take this gene… Ah, fuck it, more stamina isn't less of stamina! It will probably improve immunity by itself, too!'
And indeed, as soon as I picked the gene, my stamina and health shot up!
〔Health〕: 21 / 21
〔Stamina〕: 22 / 22
〔Attribute points〕: 3
'Now, to the more practical things. My Foremen Bees are already scary in a fight, but they can be even scarier, especially with wasps around. I must invest in the military.'
Military and resilience were my lowest colony stats. But resilience, which represented my colony's ability to withstand problems like illnesses and hunger, would jump up later thanks to the 'Enhanced Endurance II' gene.
I put a point into my strength and sighed in disappointment over the results.
〔For improving strength, you have a choice of next genes: 'Enhanced Strength I', 'Flying Carriers', and 'Death Grip'.〕
〔Enhanced Strength I: increases base strength to 10.〕
〔Flying Carriers: increases maximum carry weight during flight to 60% from the base carry weight.〕
〔Death Grip: the muscles will spasm after the owner's death with great force, preventing them from releasing their grip.〕
'Hm, the third one could've been good if it wasn't so suicidal.'
I could easily imagine a bee or several grab someone like bulldogs while they stung them. They would bring the enemy down with their sheer weight. But I picked the first gene, because it didn't require anyone to die to work.
The flat stat increase would only give a couple points of strength, but the second gene was useless.
As of now, bees could carry over air about 40% of what they could carry over the ground. The gene could've improved logistics—but what was the point if didn't know *how* to carry large volumes yet?
At least 'Enhanced Strength I' promised 'Enhanced Strength II' in the future, so I took it.
Next, agility. Will there be something better than at strength?
