Chapter 10: Team Free Will
So, you're telling me, you, my son, are apparently the Vessel of Lucifer, his literal other half, and that you've been screwing a demon for years now, never telling us anything. That you've hidden that you had demon blood because of what that son of a bitch yellow eyes did." John summarised, his face blank and his tone cold.
"Yes... Yes sir." Sam confirmed, not shying away from his father's gaze as Ruby and Dean were beside him, Bobby also there looking at all this going down. Also reeled by the information presented.
John sighed, "I need a fucking drink," he said as he picked up the whole bottle, "Hey!" eliciting a reaction from Bobby, taking a big drink out of it.
"Okay, so, what's our next step?" Asks as he drys his mouth with his sleeve.
"That's... That's it?" Dean questions suddenly.
"What?" John asks confused.
"Excuse me sir, but when Sam and Ruby told me all this, I had to with all my strength hold myself back from ripping them a new one, but you... You, I don't even know how to exactly describe what you are doing, but certainly not what I did." Dean explained.
"Oh believe me, I'm doing all I can to not kick all three of your asses, and before you ask Dean, you too, cause you held out on me these past few days too, but it's not because of what Sam is and who he's supposed to be, but because you both hid this from me.
I've done my fair share of working with the supernatural Dean, psychics, witches, the whole lot, so working with a demon, though far from anything I'd ever did, I trust Sam's instincts enough to go along with him with this, because they've never betrayed him nor us.
You both are my sons Dean, I'll always love you, I won't blame you for what happened to you, if I ever blame you, judge you, or punish you it will always be for your actions, not what you, because your actions are who you are Dean.
They are what make you good or evil, friend or foe, innocent or in need of being hunted to be put down, understand me, Dean?" John explained.
This was a far cry from who he was in canon, not his love for his sons mind you, but his look towards most things supernatural. John's vision of the world was in canon mostly black and white in the sense that if human it's good, if not it's to be hunted.
John here because of the influence of Sam over the years, who actually discussed with him a lot about monsters, lore, magic, spells, etc. This John became different than he was supposed to be before. Now the black and white is, if your actions are good then you are innocent, if your actions are evil then you need to be put down, humans this applies to as well.
"That's-That's actually good to know," Sam said with a relieved laugh.
"You didn't honestly think that I would hunt you son?" John asked concerned.
"I-" Sam didn't really know what to say, he logically knew of course, because of his ability to know truth no matter what. That's why he even told Dean and now his father and Bobby about all this because he knew they'd take it well. He knew he could trust them with this, but well, just thinking about what could happen if that weren't the case, made him very, very fearful.
"It's nothing father, I was just letting my fear get the best of me. I know you, I know Dean and I know Bobby. I knew you guys would accept this and wouldn't take it wrongly, but I... I suppose it's because I care so much that the thought of you seeing me as a monster just affected me too much." Sam explained hesitantly. He really wasn't one to bare his heart to people, but in these last few days he's had to do so many times that he's exhausted.
But he knows it's necessary that's why he does it.
"But enough about that, back to what is at hand right now. The plan, I've already told you about the plan I have that concerns Ruby-"
"Which I by the way son very much don't like, even though understand its necessity." John interrupted.
"Yes, that," Sam continued after a wince, "As for what we're going to do well, first things first, is that I know- and don't ask me how- a couple of hunts that need to be done, but not by us because what we need to do is - no matter how cold it may sound - more important, so I need you Bobby to alert some hunters to these hunts and have them be done soon." Sam says as he brings out a whole journal, that Bobby skims through for a couple of moments, John standing behind him, bottle still in hand looking with him.
"Sam, these hunts, most of them are stated with dates that haven't happened yet-"
"What!?" Dean exclaims in shock
" Sam, does this mean what I think it means? Can you-" Bobby continues unperturbed by Dean's interruption.
"Don't! Bobby, don't, please, there are things I wish to leave for myself and only myself. And this, what you're asking me, I'm really not ready to talk about right now." Sam explained.
At this everyone looked at Sam and saw that he wasn't going to back down from this, knew they couldn't convince him otherwise.
"Okay, I think everyone's gone off topic right now, let's just stop interrupting Sam and let him finish. I'd imagine we all want to rest and take time to digest all we've learned about." Ruby stated.
Her acting like a human for so many years in an environment where she'd constantly be around other students, and had to have female friends to fit in and not be seen as weird or an outcast made her have very good conversation skills.
"Fine, so back at my question Sam, tell me what would you have us do. I thought I was the leader of this whole operation before, but now you're the most knowledgeable person present so that role falls under your shoulders, son. You're the general, we're the soldiers, now order." John stated, for one reason, it was to give Sam the freedom to order without explanation because explanations take too long in a state of emergency.
He stated it openly for the most part for Dean to hear because he knew his eldest son, obeyed him and did not question any orders he gave and now the same needed to be done for Sam, but in a way that they still remained brothers and not just general and soldier, though he knew he need not worry about that. These two are inseparable.
"Thanks father, for now everyone else can go do their own things, except you, I... I need to discuss somethings with you." Sam stated.
Everyone was curious what Sam wanted to speak to John privately about, but now knowing that they've acknowledged Sam as the leader they decided to do as told.
"Well then, I'm gonna go check if Baby needs some repairs done after that stunt with the woman in white Sam did," Dean stated with a mock glare as he left.
"I'll just go and unpack our things, see you later Sam." Ruby stated receiving a nod with a gentle smile, receiving one in return from her.
"Well, I'll get on with this book you gave me, it certainly will keep me busy for a while." Bobby said as he started diving into what was written in it as Sam pulled his father with him outside and checked with his abilities that there truly wasn't anyone listening in.
"Sam, why have you called me here son?"
"Father," Sam began, looking his father in the eyes, his own eyes unwavering, "We need to talk, about Adam."
