Rebirth of a Fey Lord

Chapter 19: Arrival in the Capital

The rhythmic clatter of the carriage wheels against the cobblestones provided a steady backdrop as Eogan and Lorcan approached the capital city. Eogan leaned out the window, his emerald eyes reflecting the sprawling grandeur unfolding before them. The city was a bustling hive of activity, its towering spires and intricate architecture casting long shadows over the crowded streets below. Merchants called out their wares, street performers entertained clusters of onlookers, and the air was alive with the hum of life.

"It's… enormous," Lorcan said, his voice tinged with awe. He shifted nervously in his seat, his gaze darting between the busy streets and the towering gates they were passing through. The stark contrast between the quiet countryside and the vibrant chaos of the capital was overwhelming.

Eogan chuckled, his excitement barely contained. "Wait until you see the academy. The city's impressive, but it's nothing compared to what's inside those walls."

Leanan, invisible to everyone but Eogan, chimed in with her usual sass. "I hope it's worth all this noise and crowding. Humans and their cities… too much stone, not enough trees."

Eogan smirked but didn't respond, not wanting to draw Lorcan's attention. Instead, he gave Lorcan an encouraging pat on the shoulder. "You'll get used to it. Besides, we're here for a purpose, remember?"

Lorcan nodded, though the nervous energy didn't leave his posture. He absentmindedly adjusted the pouch at his waist, where Neala shifted slightly, offering him a tiny surge of comfort.

At the academy gates, a familiar figure waited for them. Doctor Aedan Leigheas stood with his arms crossed, his pastel green suit perfectly tailored, and a warm smile on his face. His demeanor was professional yet approachable, immediately putting Eogan and Lorcan at ease.

"Welcome to the royal academy, young master Eogan," the doctor greeted, extending a hand.

Eogan stepped forward with a smile. "Doctor Leigheas, it's good to see you again. Let me introduce you to Lorcan." Turning to Lorcan, he added, "This is Doctor Aedan Leigheas. He's been helping me understand some of the mysteries behind my meridians."

Lorcan hesitated for a moment, then reached out to shake the doctor's hand. "It's an honor to meet you, sir."

The doctor's eyes sparkled with curiosity and warmth. "The honor is mine, Lorcan. Eogan has mentioned you, and I'm looking forward to seeing how you both grow during your time here."

Lorcan's shoulders relaxed slightly at the doctor's kind tone, and he managed a small smile. "Thank you."

Aedan gestured toward the gates. "Shall we begin the tour?"

----------------------------------------------------

The academy grounds were a marvel. The sprawling campus was a harmonious blend of ancient stone buildings and verdant gardens, with enchanted lamps floating above pathways to guide students at night. A massive central tower dominated the skyline, its spire disappearing into the clouds. There were signs of magic everywhere they turned—from self-sweeping brooms to animated statues offering directions.

Doctor Leigheas led them through the key areas, his voice carrying a mix of pride and reverence. "This is the Grand Library," he said, gesturing to a colossal building with stained-glass windows depicting legendary mages. "It houses thousands of tomes, many of which are enchanted to provide real-time demonstrations of the spells within."

Lorcan's eyes widened, his awe mirrored by the tiny flicker of excitement he felt from Neala. "It's incredible," he murmured.

"And over here," Aedan continued, "is the training ground. This is where students practice combat magic. The grounds are shielded by a powerful barrier, ensuring that even the most destructive spells won't harm anything beyond this area."

Eogan studied the space intently, already imagining himself testing his limits within the barrier's confines. He could feel Leanan's approval, her presence buzzing faintly with anticipation.

As the tour continued, Doctor Leigheas pulled Eogan aside, his tone growing more serious. "Eogan, there's something I need to discuss with you."

Eogan nodded, signaling for Lorcan to explore a nearby fountain. Once they were alone, the doctor's expression shifted, his usually cheerful demeanor replaced with one of quiet concern.

"Fully developed meridians in children are extremely rare," he began. "In the cases I've studied, they're often linked to extraordinary circumstances. Some were exposed to powerful artifacts or ancient spells; others had ancestral ties to legendary mages. But a few…"

He paused, studying Eogan closely. "A few cases are tied to reincarnation."

Eogan's pulse quickened, but he kept his expression neutral. "Reincarnation?"

Aedan nodded. "There are documented instances of souls retaining fragments of their past lives, which can accelerate the development of their magical abilities. But this comes with risks. Physical strain, emotional instability, even… a disconnect from their current life."

Eogan absorbed the information, his mind racing. He thought of his connection to Leanan, the memories that sometimes felt like echoes from another world. "I see," he said carefully. "Thank you for telling me."

The doctor's eyes softened. "I don't mean to alarm you, but it's important that you're aware. If you ever feel overwhelmed, seek help. The academy has resources for students with unique circumstances."

Eogan offered a small smile, his voice steady. "I appreciate your concern, doctor. I'll be cautious."

-------------------------------------------------------

Rejoining Lorcan, Eogan found his friend studying the fountain, its water cascading in a mesmerizing, enchanted rhythm. Lorcan looked up, his curiosity evident, but he didn't press Eogan about the private conversation. Instead, they followed Doctor Leigheas as he led them to their final stop—the dormitories.

The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the campus. The dormitory building was welcoming, with ivy climbing its walls and a warm light spilling from its windows. Aedan paused at the entrance, turning to face them.

"This is where I leave you for now," he said with a smile. "Settle in, explore, and prepare for the days ahead. And Eogan, remember what we discussed."

Eogan nodded his resolve firm. "Thank you, Doctor."

As the door closed behind them, Eogan and Lorcan exchanged a glance. The day had been long and full of revelations, but the adventure was just beginning. Together, they stepped into the dormitory, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them.
